Team Microbe's Nose Dive into No-till (2nd cycle)

Ah! 10x 25gallon pots.
Now I see why you´d probably prefer to buy biochar ready from somewhere instead of crushing charcoal meant for barbeque with 2" by 4".. it´d take a while..
But like i said, if you have plenty of rice hulls and place for charring them, then its not so big work at all..
Would be interesting to see if you decide to use it.

$20 for 4 gallons?! That's half a cubic ft?! Get their oly fish mountain compost. It's 2 cubic ft for $27. I get bags for $7 :nanana:

Home Depot sells premier peat moss but you might have to order online. Supposed to be good quality. $12 per bale.

Certain wood bark can change ph, so I used a combo of leaves and coco chunks.

nah it's actually 1 cubic foot for $27... even more of a rip off. It's all in the shipping though, he says if you live where they make it it's hella cheap

I'm probably not gonna char the hulls, I'll just use them as is since I'm getting bio char for the mix as well. If I wasn't in a hurry to get this run started then I might have done it though, I like the idea of it :tiphat:

What's everyone smoking on tonight?

What's everyone smoking on tonight?

I just wanted to share tonight's sifting outcome with everyone, this took maybe an hour or so of carding...

Cheesequake x Hollister Kush 73u (95%+ heads) - easily the best hash I've ever smoked in my entire life. There's something about the terp profile in this strain that just makes the odor explode off of the screens. When I'm carding all I smell is deep fruity profiles with this rich musky undertone that makes you smell it over and over again. What's really amazing is the difference between 90%, and 95%+ purity. The 90% still has a hint of green in it - but once I clean it further and can't find any contaminant under the scope the complete terpene profile is expressed in the smoke. It's that shit that you don't wanna blow out and when you do you blow it out through your nose and just try to taste every single last drop of it. This hash gives a full bodied buzz with a relaxing come down that just nestles you to sleep like a baby. I've been in a hash coma for 4 days now because of it, I literally need to finish it before I re-enter society

And the doners....

Does anyone else sift here? If not I'll stop posting these shots and open up a separate thread, I just figure I have a little time to kill before planting in the new no-till pots I'm building

It comes in 2 cuft bags here. I know everyone loves BAS but their stuff is SPENDY! Like Fulpower, $26 or go to the expensive hydro store and it's $20 and you get a discount. Amendment kits are crazy expensive. CC shows you how to mix it and source stuff for cheap locally. Sourcing stuff is 25%+ him talking about different companies and talk about the importance if doing this. Has anyone heard of a carbon footprint?

I won't sneeze at paying out big bucks for growing but this is the most expensive place. The only thing you should have trouble sourcing is coconut water powder, but you can get that cheap and fresher through big box outlets like Sams Club or Costco. For $15 I can get about a gallons worth in small bottles. Then you can spend that extra cash on other things, like more lights or a bigger tent. Just thing out loud.

TM you doing all this work by yourself? thats a lot to take care of just your indoor 10 25 gallon pots, fun stuff for sure and if you have the time good on you bro, look forward to seeing this.

I made a veg tea the exact one you posted on your last no-till page and inoculated my 7 and 5 gallons last night which have a beautiful layer of cover crop coming through the hay, but, I got a little into the beer cup templates in the pots which have my tiny seedling just planted under the soil……..will this affect the tiny seedling sprout? has not popped the surface in 2 days and was concerned I hurt them with my T5's to close to soon then the tea, any ideas or just keep giving it time to see what happens.

Can the nutrient tea burn the seedling if exposed to it?

I made the mistake of keeping my 4 bulb T5 lights too close too soon, was about 3 inches from the surface for a day and a half before it registered to me to raise them due to possibly high heat affecting growth, they are now around 10 inches away….any thoughts on this.

Yeah the kit has everything measured out for you to add to a tarp/kiddie pool to mix together yourself, all you need is the bale of peat moss that costs like $10 at Home Depot. It's in a 1:1:1 ratio already, and it's got the amendments as well. It's everything you would need basically. I'm sure you can find it even cheaper somewhere else, you would just have to source things locally. Sometimes you come up empty handed, then other times you hit gold mines and save a ton of money. As for compost - I've found some high quality compost an hour away from me for $80 a yard (200 gallons). I'm going to use that for my outdoor plots because I dig relatively big holes and purchasing bagged compost would simply be insane.

You can easily find quality compost made by a farm or a landscaping business, and then inoculate that soil mix with a higher quality compost like Worm Power or Rocky Mtn Worm Castings. While adding these premium composts to the soil mix can grow healthier plants, the difference in cost isn't anywhere near worth it when you can grow just as nice plants with a few tricks and a compost tea brewer. Things to avoid when looking for compost is inputs like leaves or any ingorganic additives. You wanna be spending at least $45 per yard if it's going to be decent IMO.

That watering regimen would absolutely work. For a rough, outdoor climate that wouldn't be attended on the regular I would add a silica product in there along side the coconut water in week 3, just to keep branches strong enough to withstand the elements. I actually am using the CC kit for all of my holes this year - it will pay for itself and then some too.

90 gallons of mix calls for $55 worth of nutrient kit (considering you buy the XXL kit for a cubic yard's worth). I'm going to go with 45 gallon holes since my budget isn't massive, because I like growing multiple strains for variety over the year pretty much. Since I've made this diagram I've found cheaper rice hulls and cheaper compost, reducing the cost per hole from $50 to $35. Considering each plant grows to reach 1/4-1 pound depending on strain, it's well worth having that complete diet in the soil for them.

Thanks buddy! I think I'll just end up buying the complete IPM kit from BAS.

I think I'm gunna get around 400 gal of soil. Im waiting on a freight quote from BAS right now... Depending on the quotes I might get it shipped on a pallet in bags to save myself some hassle during the transportation process. If not I'll buy the kits and do all the mixing myself. I just figured their shit has been cooking a while. It might show better results.

EDIT:
I found a local guy that has compost. He's into worms, so the shit looks pretty nice to me (but what do i know?), and I'd be able to pick it up to save freight! Can I pm you the guys thread and website?

The guy sells his compost by the pound $.75/lb at a bulk rate (1.50 if not). There is pics in the cl posting. He said 3 pounds make a gallon. So a gallon is $2.25. There are 202 gallons in a cubic yard. So a cubic yard of this compost is $455. Then the hulls will cost $240 / cu yard. The peat will be $125/cu yd. $820 for 3 cu yards of the bare soil. Then the amendments and IPM kit will run me $431 (rounded off to the closest I needed/cheapest way).

So total it’ll run me $1251 for EVERYTHING for 600 gals of soil (that’s cheaper than just the 3 kits that made 270 gallons from BAS, and I’m getting more than double)

1251+550(in the trunk and tool kit/other non BAS feeds)= $1801. I feel a lot better making that 600 gal $1800 investment knowing ill have double the soil (the other 270 gal would’ve been $1975). Now I can run 40 gals a plant (instead of 20) and still have 80 gals to fuck around with.

I hope this compost checks out, it would save me a killing and put me in for a hell of a season. If not I'm gunna have to resort to the BAS kits :/.

Do I still need to top dress ewc if its fresh soil?

I switched my room around a bit and rather than repeating a run in the 7 & 10 gallon no-tills I decided to use them to mother future mothers in, and am currently building soil for (10) 25 gallon pots that I'll be flowering in from here on out. A little delay and less than ideal, but I think it'll be worth it for the next run to be bigger and better than the last. I probably should've started the thread when the containers were built, but I didn't make the decision til a few weeks ago so my apologies!

So we have to wait for another full round in fresh dirt to see any no-till results?

This thread has failed to deliver imo. Lot of good hype for BAS tho, I will say that.

Although I didn't care for your tone Lapides -

I do apologize to everyone for the hold up here. I was on the fence trying to decide if I wanted to stick the wait out or just say screw it and wait a round to build the new pots. I was thinking about beginning a new thread branching off from the end of this one when the next cycle does begin in a few weeks. Until then we can use this thread to just shoot the shit, or if anyone hasn't read my first thread and feel like killing some time then go check it out in my signature titled "Living Soil Lab".

No need to apologize. It's your thread and your dollar. I'm 25 pages in and my seedlings just got their second nodes :D

My last thread had well over a 1,000 comments so I'm not even warmed up. For entertainment today, I showed mud wrestling chicks. Worked out great!

It's definitely hard to not run into the grow room to work on the plants after smoking this hash - granted I have some mothers in veg but it's just not enough...
