The New Caledonian Males are now showing pistols after all sacs for a bit (well 2/3 are one still hasn’t confirmed sex yet which is wild as now at 18th node) I’m not so sure how I feel; I mean preference would be firm males but at same time males that have pistols isn’t such a bad thing, certainly better than no males….
After I harvest, dry and cure, I leave the buds in a canning jar for a couple of months, I then vacuum seal them and freeze them. If I have a good stash, which I always try to have, the frozen buds might be that way for 2 years before I get to them.

Do you have an after harvest process that you go by?

Just my 2c, unsolicited so I apologize.
I had 5 female New Caldonia. Out of 5, 3 had anthers (bananas). One was only a few but the other two had alot.
Now this was inside, that's worth noting.
Just my recent experience. Figured I'd mention this since your doing selections with the line.

I love your thread, been alot of fun to watch, I appreciate you!

I grew out 40-50 seeds or so of the year 2000 New Caledonia I did the initial bulking on, these are @ a decade before ACE versions used, same Island source however. I still have plenty of those initial seeds I made but wanted to push them in a direction I like & move towards a more pure Sativa expression if possible which is what I’m doing now, I also want to make SE Asians x New Caledonia so doing that too along with seeing what the N.C. x Oaxacan look like & backcrossing them to N.C. males making the mix 75/25

N.C. definitely have herm issues indoors anyone telling you otherwise doesn’t have the real deal, my guess N.C. origins are SE Asian & some American/ Australian/Etc surfer seeds in there too, perhaps, SE Asians are sexually fluid plants

That said the N.C. ladies weren’t bad and plenty of firm plants too; males that wanna show fem parts aren’t all that bad when ultimately we consume females

I don’t have a set process beyond stable & slow and my intuition which is fairly well honed these days. I used to use all glass but when you start getting hundreds of half gallon mason jars it’s bulky, heavy & impractical though best way to store. For indoors I have two basement closets I use that can handle up to 7’ plants, I generally hang plants whole and leave them there weeks, if not months. Sometimes due circumstances & me being lazy plants will hang many months, often they are still good & have began their cure perfectly. The basement closets are stable temp & humidity.

But I only use 2 & 5 gallon food grade buckets these days with sealing lids, it’s so much easier to use & large flowers fit. Food grade buckets pick up odors though & almost always end up smelling a potent lemon like sour head candy, sometimes it sticks @ for years, for whatever reason that’s just what happens, lemon prevails

I generally like to bucket up wetter than most as I know this achieves a better cure, I’ve never had flowers mold up that weren’t already… I’ve never frozen flowers but do edibles, hash & oil

Curing is an art form like growing, after a while though it’s all second nature, just going through the routines…

Speaking of routines, feeling like this one is becoming too frequent, man I’ve really upped my coffee intake lately, probably need to work on reducing it some

It's been a long time since I 've dried and cured anything beyond several ounces. Thanks for sharing your harvest method, it's interesting how you go about it. I'm a lifelong learner and always open to new techniques.

I think of the winemaker who sells expensive bottles of wine. When asked, what makes his wine better than others, he replied, "it's not one thing I do but it's all the small things I do."

Damn, I know I like coffee but I'm starting to feel inferior.

You mention the word fire and then leave me hanging:)

What is it that inspires you to roast your own beans. Look how shiny those beans are. Are they oily?
same here..been a decade ..I sometimes miss the clock..
We still have the microwave that was given to us about 20 years ago, it doesn't get used very often. I like to dry my parsley in it after harvest.

Excellent. Fascinating how you sourced them so long ago!
Can you tell me more of your thoughts on se asian varieties regarding males with pistils (any info is appreciated) and if your looking for anything else specofically in the New Caldonia (smell/taste/terps)?

I recall someone on here educating me about how there are two ways plant sex is determined (X to autosome vs active Y), and that se Asian varieties are different from the majority of cannabis regarding sex determination. That was new info to me, and I'd love to hear what you know on the topic based on your experience, such as what impact using such males with pistils for breeding has on the progeny.

Just to be clear I didn’t source them a native did over periods of time (decades) & shared them over periods of time; a Spanish friend gave them to me for bulking & keeping the old seed alive - people like to call this a reproduction

a post I made years ago elsewhere on related subjects

""Most flowering plants are hermaphroditic, and unisexual individuals (dioecious) have evolved from hermaphroditic ancestors many times (Renner, 2014). Trioecy is an uncommon sexual system in which hermaphrodites, females, and males coexist in some species. Trioecy occurs during the evolutionary transition from hermaphroditism to dioecy (Charlesworth and Charlesworth, 1978, Ross, 1982, Spigler and Ashman, 2012). Trioecy is a stable evolutionary stage under pollen limitation of female seed production because pollen limitation reduces the fitness of females but not self-fertile hermaphrodites, counteracting the seed fertility advantage of females (Maurice and Fleming, 1995). "

CONTD.......

I’d say SE Asians are Gynodioecious & Monoecious 🤫

first machine...over two years I didn’t remove accrued oils and seldom emptied chaff chamber..I

also pushed the roast,...it caught fire..it was not pretty

as well ..its even heated by air..I won’t make that mistake again
What is it that inspires you to roast your own beans.
1.its almost impossible to find dark enough roast
2.if you don’t ruin the machine..you save 50%..
3.i make my own bacon ,back bacon, mtl smoked meat, cold smoked salmon, and hot dogs
for starters
Look how shiny those beans are. Are they oily?
I hope bso..I only like very dark roast

it does have its use..[and the clock]

NC - Monoecious, more time will tell for sure but I’ve seen this many times before…

I’ve eliminated 2 other males exactly like this and maybe will this one, on some SE Asians you’ll get just a few freak long thin male arms that seemingly appear overnight well into flower - in contrast this entire plant showed male first at croches then female flowers build above that rest of grow - so I’m suggesting in cannabis there’s two types of monoecious plants I’ve seen.

This is last male to show, in a week or so I’ll know his deal but he could be promising

IMG_0171.jpeg

In general sativas and especially as you move closer to equator show sex first in females near always, balls come out quite a bit later, timing makes sense long flowering Sativas….

The only real time I see this vary is when it’s Monoecious like plant, so when I see balls first on them I expect it to come - balls & pistols stay separated but both on same plant

Just my experience yours may differ - good for you - ha :)

what did you use for the polytunnel hoops? i bought 3 cheap setups that all failed after 12 months, and i can't afford industrial hoops and set up . Did you use water pipe? i'm going to maybe build a wooden structure and use carport clear plastic , or i was thinking hoops made from watermains pipe. What tomato do you like best for sauce? i love growing tomatoes myself
you ever build anything...?

yeah , i built a 50 ft polytunnel , and i have been using that for two seasons . had a bit of an issue with the land owner though , but no big deal.
Would love to see some pics if you’ve got them….
