Strange Slime buildup on roots

UV and beneficial microbes do not mix. UV will kill them.

I meant the combination of IGT's suggestion of adding a UV to pretreat the RO water before inoculation, and your suggestion of adding ZHO to the brew might finally give me results. Would be quite tragic if I brewed an elaborate flora of microlife and then poured them into a res with a UV unit in it. :)

I talked to a few friends in europe and they recommended I dont use a uv unit due to the fact it kills everything including beneficials. They told me they use something called a biofilter than removes the anerobic bacteria and they have no problems with slime. seems they are real popular in holand germany and israel. Problem is I havent located one in the usa. Has anybody seen these or used them or have any experience with them? 3 days so far and no slime in my cloner, no roots either. so far the watermax is working

Read up. I talked plenty about them in this thread.

Jus wondering something,
I have some cuttings in rockwool for now while I try to get my DWC in order. I noticed the cubes smell pretty musty this morning. When you guys use rockwool, do you try to use the tea and colonize it, or do you think it's okay to use some zone and sterilize them? Or should I jus ignore the smell?

Dip them in the tea and you will be amazed with what you see in the next few days.

Hey RichyRich,
Thanks for everything you and everyone else documented here.. Today on day 5 I have roots :) they are very small but are protruding through the stem. Others have yet to root but after reading this whole thread and taking precautions I pulled them through. I figure 3 days minimum for the rest of them. This is really exciting. I did not use anything but I made sure 50% of the water was removed everyday and replaced with fresh water.. WooHoo!!!! Temperatures average at 87 degrees.

Here she goes:
TrainWreck @ 5 days (It is achievable!! :))

Again thank you to all who contributed in keeping us future growers informed.

thanks richy. Ill go back and read thru. Its alot to take in on the first read or two. Have you used them. What do you think? worth doing or is the tea better. I swear man than ez-cloner is moking me, laughing and teasing me 6 days with callusus on just one cut. but thank god no slime. next run will be another with the tea and pumping the temps to 80-85f. Thanks for all the info and time you put in this thread I appreciate your efforts. If I can repay the favor just ask.

I like AquaShield and/or Great White personally. Do NOT add enzyme products into a fresh res. Did you add enzymes before? If so, that was where your problems really started. WAIT until bacteria have colonized your roots BEFORE you add enzymes. Wait at least a week.

Btw, I probably wasn't clear in my post above. Don't add any nutes to the fresh water for a couple days and when you do add, add at half strength and avoid organics until new root growth (colonized with bacteria) get going.

real good point from grow time. I put enzymes in & got the brownish slime
and I had Oregonism in the house. screw me man.
now I gotta clean these up. with Physan.

I'm out of the Pythoff $30. so maybe Physan20

Physan20 not for edible crops

Physan20 not for edible crops

I imagine they mean spraying the physan on the crop but they could mean 'systemic' (in the water or hydro nutrients)

anybody have concerns about systemic Physan20 uptake and storage inside the flowers??
thanks.

EDIT:

Label says NOT to be used in greenhouses where food crops are grown. Toxic to fish...

Just follow the directions in my signature. Add additional tea every third day. Make your tea out of Ancient Forest if you can find it. Add Root Excelurator when beginning to make your tea. Add it in with the rest of the ingredients. When making the tea use a large air pump with an air stone. Lots of air equals lots of oxygen. End result will be a potent tea of beneficial microbes. I use a General Hydroponics Dual Diaphragm pump. It works great. Smaller pumps dont work so good.

Thanks so much Richy, I was indeed amazed to see roots coming out of these huge rockwool cubes just a couple days after installing the smaller plugs. So nice to see white fuzzy roots after weeks and weeks of brown sludge. It seems brewing the tea is like making your own super charged roots excelurator.

I think that is about half of the concern, with the other half being too much stress on the plants if running it continuously.

For what it's worth, Ed Rosenthal says this about Physan 20,
This is a broad spectrum disinfectant made from a salt, double quaternary ammonium chloride. It leaves no residue and breaks down into nitrogen, which plants use. It can be used as a soil drench and to sterilize trays, walls and equipment. It can also help prevent seedling and plant diseases when added to the irrigation water. Physan 20 has been used for over 25 years and is generally considered very safe.

Hang in the DarthVapor,
I'm rooting for you :) Give 'em at least 5 more days. You may have some tough strains.

thanks man. I hope your right.

next run Im gonna give the tea another try see if I get roots any faster. cloning is the weakest part of my game. It was germinating seeds, but practice and a butt load of dead seeds and finally Im good at it with 95% germination. now to conquer cloning. It my weakest link right now. I alway got clones and never needed to clone. I regret it now. I have some great genetics in seed form but am afraid to germ because I suck at cloning and any great moms or dads will be lost due to my lack of skill in the cloning dept

Just to update with my experience so far.
Roots excel in bubble cloner makes slime, roots excel in dwc stunts root growth. Just like the other guy was saying with his rockwool clones roots tips dying off. Most expensive and most worthless thing I've bought so far.

My mix for dwc is GH or H and G base nutes, pro silicate, great white and MOAB for a bloom booster. No carbs or organics or seaweed. Works great and no slime.

Super thrive in dwc/cloner is bad. It feeds slime like crazy, and may even be the cause of it.

I try to run my bubble cloner at 72-75f and my dwc at 68-70f.
Currently using great white and liking it. Using it in my dwc and in a half ass temporary swc/ebb flow thing. Rubber maid with net pots in the bottom of it, lava rocks in the pots, few inches of water in the bottom of the rubbermaid and an air stone. Roots get light, water gets light, great white seems to keep it clean. Kind of just a test to see what it can do.

I used to run hydrogen peroxide and it did great until I got the slime. Now it's great white instead.

Physan 20 works well. It also kills clones pretty easy if you give them too much.

Thanks for Ed's info on Physan. I feel a lot better using t.
