I've grown both Afropips Malawi and Swazi - I can tell you I saw no similarity between them.
Ok. That's good to know. Was Afropips Swazi a Swazi Gold or red? Roms' current version seems to be more red dominant. The one I have leans more to the Gold.

I’ve only smoked Malawi cob once (25 years ago)and it was a cleaner high than the Swazi. i met a chick in Mozambique that had a cob she had brought with her.. It was like a pure stimulant , hard to describe as I have never experienced anything like it since. I found all southern African herb to be more stimulating than Asian or American traditional herb.
That sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. Stimulating and clean. The Swazi works for me now, but if there is anything more so, I'm keen to try it. There is an old Malawi line in the Santa Cruz area that equilibrium genetics uses in crosses that I'd like to try pure to see if it has those effects. Hopefully these effects come through in their Ethiopian x Malawi cross

Keep hearing terpinolene. TERPINOLENE TERPINOLENE. Out of all the terpenes that have jack shit all to do with weed, this parroting of "TERPINOLENE" intrigues me the most.

What do you think terpinolene smells like, exactly? Because people keep saying it, in regards to "Haze". And I keep smelling overfed Sativas, people claiming it's "haze" terps.

Terpinolene smells like a rusty apple hospital cypress oil. There is no other way to describe it.

No one has ever smelled terpinolene in weed. I have grown 9" internodes for 50 years. I've popped every "haze" seed on the market. You internet guys have been told plastic smells from too much phosphorus = terpinolene.

Tldr: Historically, anyone who name drops "terpinolene", especially while talking "haze" is smoking plastic terps.

??? There is no "haze" smell.

Some smell like spicy tropical leather, some smell like sugary incense. Some smell like lemons. Some smell like the nostalgia of your ancestors tilling burnt crop residue into fields at night.

How is that one smell?
post some pictures of your plants and i will respond

Ace just released a Thai cross called Rush of Siam. It’s supposed to be super energetic, thai type of effects. Might be worth checking out 😊
It can challenge you for the first hour, but I always managed to stay on the positive side. Highly recommended.

Hyp3rids mexicans are speedy, especially La Perla Negra, for the first 30 min. it will hit you like a train. Funny or not that's a different story

The swazi came from ROMS, and I guess the phenos I had were not the gold with 16 wk flowering, but more the classic 14 weeker. The Malawi was sourced directly from Jim of Afropips , and I probably grew them about 2005. Still have some in the deep freeze, and it is still great!

I assimilate terpinolene in weed to a « clean, soapy smell ». I love it and I can hardly take my nose off of the strains that are heavy in terpinolene, but from my experience it rarely translates to the flavor.

Some people could smell different things I don’t know… I think it’s not all about terpenes. Take two strains really high in myrcene, one could smell like pine and the other one like mango 🤷‍♂️ And both smells are supposed to come from the myrcene so…

The Swazi has a fruity smell while growing. I am not sure if this is the results of many years of inbreeding in Hawaii or if that was the case when originally acquired in Swaziland. I haven't grown the Ethiopian yet and also only have a hybrid. The 2 Malawi's I've grown have also only been hybrids. Unfortunately, smell isn't my best sense (alot of allergies). I usually break it down to either it stinks (prevalent skunky smell) or smell nice (fruity smell).

Good to know. I guess I need to be on the hunt for pure Afropips Malawi. I may try some F2s I made of Burmese x Malawi (50% Afropips Malawi) and see if there is a stimulant pheno. I'm keen to cross Roms' Swazi with mine as both are old lines.

I'm pretty sure that Angus (TRSC) has some Afropips Malawi.

what does Malawi smell like?
It really depends on how mature they are, I am an old guy and my nose doesn't work like it used to. I am not good at describing smells, not to mention that it was a long time ago that I grew Afropips Malawi. I will say that I remember there was a difference between how it TASTED when it was fresh , to the way it is now. When fresh, it had a peppery note, now it has a slight skunkiness? to it.
I guess after 20 yrs in the freezer , things can change - (compressed, vac sealed, stored in jars @ -40F in freezer)

I don't want to say how much is in storage, but I will never run out, that's for sure. I use a 2 ton jack to compress the buds, then double or triple vac seal, then into jars, before going into a -40 freezer. It's amazing how well preserved it is, almost like fresh when opening a pkg!

"Terpinolene is also known as δ-Terpinene due to its close similarity to other terpinenes. It is sometimes the chief terpene found in a cannabis sample e.g. in the 'durban poison' drug chemotype (55%) [13]. It has been found in a variety of plant sources such as sage, apple, cumin, lilac, tea tree and lemon, but it is primarily isolated from pine and fir trees."

You have alot of possible aromas from terpinolene depending on orientation and its accompanying terpenes and esters. I find it more of a flavor enhancing compound that seems to modify and deepen the flavor of otherwise subdued flavors.

"Terpinolene is a constituent of many essential oils e.g. Citrus, Mentha, Juniperus, Myristica species Parsnip oil (Pastinaca sativa) is a major source (40-70%). Terpinolene is a flavouring ingredient. Terpinolene has been shown to exhibit anti-fungal function."

Parsnip, carrot, fir tree sap, pine tree sap, roses, and my favorite chlorinated solvents... all the above can be perceived via terpinolene at different conditions and combinations.

Does the effect change over time?
Or is it like cryogenic cannabis?

I would say there is minimal change in effect, it has zero exposure to O2 or light - having said that, I think any change is only due to the compression and possible disruption of the trichomes as a result of that.

I don't know what cryogenic cannabis is, but it seems that deep freezing it for a long period would be a description of that, and that is what I have done. It is nice to have a library of strains to choose from though!

Yes that’s what I was getting at. Probably not the correct term for the technique.

Man I love this, You’ve Inspired me to start a freezer library too . Thank you :)

You're welcome! I highly recommend the "jack puck" for compression - it comes in either round or square sizes, the square one makes 2" square pucks that are about 1/2" thick and weigh about 35g each. If you use food saver bags, 6 pucks fit nicely in there, and then you can triple bag and seal them for protection.
A word of caution - I thought at one time that more compression is better, so I tried using a stronger jack. The jack puck is 2 ton, so I tried a different set-up with 10 ton, and it squeezes out the resin from the grass, so more compression is not good unless you are looking to extract the resin!
