Stop using the word "marijuana"..it's called Cannabis

I hate the word Marijuana.

First they gave Cannabis a weird, obscure, foreign name, told lies about it, then they banned it. Which was pretty amazing when you consider at this time it was more than likely that some of over the counter medicinal tonics, salves, restoratives, relaxants, "cures" and other medicines "for man or animal" in most American's cabinets at home contained Cannabis Sativa as an ingredient.

Cannabis is the name of the plant, Anslinger in the 1930's popularized the term "marijuana" and it's a term that the prohibitionists and the media and just about everyone else since then have used to help keep this useful plant illegal.

So it's about time that we started using the word "Cannabis" which will help everyone eventually be free of their negativity, bullshit, profit and control driven war related to cannabis.

Next time you are about to write or say the word Marijuana instead say/write the word "Cannabis", which will be correct and positive! Next time you hear the word "marijuana" let that person know that it's a term that is now considered to be a negative term for cannabis.

actually, it's known by lots of names around the world besides marijuana...ganja, dar-mah, chambe, etc etc

Actually, I don't think it will take long at all to see the word marijuana gradually phased out worldwide. I should of said that was to stop using the word Marijuana and use the correct and positive term for cannabis in your area.

I saw the same schtick years ago (that wasn't you then, was it, tropic?.). I like what youre saying and I do try to remember it when talking/typing. you forgot to mention that marijuana is derived from the Spanish word, marihuana. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/marijuana

at that time there was no 'political correctness' at that time and the word 'marijuana' was used, instead of cannabis, to represent negativity.

but scrappy is right, good luck with that. maybe if you could the MMJ crew to start calling it Medical Cannabis (MC) instead of Medical Marijuana (MMJ) it could fly but MC (Merry Christmas) is already taken.:dance013:

It seems that whenever the plant is mentioned in the media in a negative way the word marijuana is always used, when the plant is spoken of in a positive or neutral way the word cannabis is used.

It's known by many names, but you could go to practically any country in the world and say marijuana and people will know what you're talking about.

It would take a huge effort and a long ass time to get something like that to catch on. A better plan would be to have people change the association to the actual substance. Which, btw is already happening. I think it's always gonna be mainly called marijuana though.

I call it pot and I am always going to call it pot.

Old school until I die. Which will be sooner than later.

Now lets roll a joint and smoke some weed, I mean pot.

And Anslinger blew that smoke right up everybodys asses & now were stuck with a derogatory term to refer to as "medicine"...

Though, on the other hand, some strain names are completely ridiculous... Green Crack, Opium, Crystal METH... for instance.

It didn't take Anslinger & his cronies long to make marijuana a regularly used term...

All we need is a movie...
how about...

I have never been able to say the "M" word out loud. It sticks in my throat. I have especially hated it since I discovered the racist origins of that phoney, made up word. Cannabis works just fine for me, although I like the irony of "weed." Dagga is a pretty cool name too.

How about the word Sensimilla ? This too is of Mexican Spanish origin and commonly used in the war against cannabis . In my state the medical program uses the spelling Marihuana for some reason or another - never really cared to know though to be honest .

I think its best to educate others on this subject if they are using this term outside of a legal perspective . This is the only time I have ever let it roll of my tongue due to my dislike of the word and its use as a derogative

Keanabis or Cannabis is an ancient word with many meanings . Research and study this word and its origins and it really gets interesting if you like history . I will not get into some of the other correct names this plant holds in other ancient languages but please do know English is a modern language that has borrowed and adopted words from all directions in order to be a developed as it is today .

Cannabis is how it was referred to by the medical community. My understanding of the history is that marijuana was selected quite deliberately as a pejorative to confuse the medical community so they would not object to the proposed legislation. I quite agree the name sucks and I prefer cannabis or at times pot, though it is always spoken with affection and as a tribute.

With the current state of the cannabis legalization movement I'm not sure that the name used to describe the plant should really be at the top of the list of hurdles to tackle.

I disagree. Words matter. Names matter. Consider the spelling "marihuana." You see that spelling and you instantly know whomever wrote it is archaically anti-weed. Getting the language right helps set the agenda.
