So, the ladybugs have been on the loose for about a week now. They seem to be making a difference against the pest, but I don't know if they have full control.
The plants look healthier, and the spotty damage is spreading much slower now. Many of the lady bugs die shortly after release, but then a few remain roaming the plants. I don't know if my previous use of neem is hurting them but the plants were washed in the shower shortly after the one use of neem.
Either way, I've got about 26 days +/- with these two big girls already, and I'm about out of bud completely. Since I refuse to buy cannabis on the black market, I'll be stuck until these flower again....dangit. I went through this last time. My spirituality demands that I have cannabis daily, and I hoped to avoid a delay this time.
I've gotta get these flowered and get another batch going quick.
Here's some awesome growth for about 26 days of veg, maybe couple more or less, can't remember.
flower em quick!just kidding . glad to see things are greening . do you know if they are sensi sk#1 ? do they really finish in 45 days ....? getting ready to flower some sk#1 soon ... just wondering ...... all is well ... lookin good ! many blessings.,hidingtree
Honestly, I am not sure which skunk #1 they are since I got them as a cutting, but they are a very sweet skunky pheno with dense pocorn burst looking buds. I do know they finish about 60-65 days for me.
Hey gaius! The ladybugs seem to be making a difference. Much less damage on newer growth. I have a cover over the end of my cool tube to keep them from exiting the room. I wonder if many are flying through the box fan and getting tore up. I was told that when I get some larvae going in there, they will destroy the scale even more ferociously than the adults. I hope the ladybugs lay eggs and wipe everything out.
I've dumped a few hundred at a time every couple days, but many die off quickly. I don't know if it's from the previous use of neem or if they are going through the fan or something.
Either way, I'm flipping to flower this evening because I just can't wait anymore, and I think the girls are getting a little big for flippin em. I kinda have a general idea of how large they should be before flower, and I think these are a little extra big, lol!
So, today I'm proud to announce, I think I have the healthiest looking crop I've ever had in my bloom room!
It looks like the ladybugs are getting control of whatever pest is on my plant. I am pretty positive it is a scale insect, but identifying exactly which one is almost impossible. The spotty discoloration of my leaves is growing less and less as time goes on. The ladybugs seem to be happy, and so am I!
New growth looks phenomenal. I've been running the plants at 950ppm for about two weeks, and they are loving. I did just let it drop over the last week to about 650ppm because I got lazy. Today is day one of flower so I pushed them back to 950ppm with veg nutes, keeping ph stable around 5.8-6.0. I will let them run through the stretch on this feeding schedule and then I'll switch them to flower nutes at about 1000ppm.
Here's a shot of a couple damaged leaves. Little bastards really do a number for something almost completely invisible to the eye.
Here are some shots of how healthy the plants look overall after introducing the ladybugs. I'm very happy with how they look now.
Finally, here's a shot of the gardener's friends doing their thing. I'll be releasing a few hundred more here in a few minutes because I don't want the rest of them to die in the fridge, lol. I want them to get a little chance to do something too. Each plant is hosting about 10-20 ladybugs on average.
So, here's to big harvests, and my healthiest plants EVER!! They grow so good when the roots are cold it's beyond amazing. I wish I had the money to make all this stuff right the first 10 times around!!
Gaiusmarius Hey amigo! I'm always glad to have you visit my thread! I tried using my head since I only have two plants, and had 4500 ladybugs. I figured I'd drop a couple hundred every couple days that way the one's that die off can be vacuumed up, and the one's that live will have a nice home as the plants get bigger. I released the last wave of them last night, which is morning for the plants.
User Name Thanks for poppin in again UN! You are absolutely right, just the two bushes there. I started the tying phase last night, so they are significantly spread out now. I will continue my tying untill the end of the stretch when we have a nice even canopy. I decided to only run two plants of one strain this time to keep things simple. When stretch is over I don't doubt these two will fill out the closet as much as the last four due to their current size.
Overall I'm very excited with this run. The plants and environment are near perfection after 3 years, and the only small issue is the pests, but I figure the ladybugs will win this one. If not, I'll get more predators!
Updates should come quicker as the plants start showing some real progress over the next couple weeks, and then it's on with the budding! I can't wait. I've gotta learn to time these better so I quit running out because I refuse to buy cannabis on the black market.
Thanks again to everyone who has stopped by and at least said "hello!"
cool S2D, it'sgood to hear you have got your enviorment down pat. the plants will thank you. thosetwo plants are gonna get quite big eh? have you made any plans for suporting the branches when they start getting heavy with bud? it really helps plants when they don't have to stress to keep their buds up. it alows the plants to spend all energy on bud growth, without having to waste her energy to make the stems thick enough to hold up the weight, lol. will you use a bunch of them yoyo things? check out the supports bullseye used with a similar style of grow, just in coco. let me get the link......... ahh here it is:
yo s2d lookin good . me and me pal are raising some sk#1 plants right now . we have a mixed indica/sativa pheno and a pure sativa one from the same pack of sk#1 from sensi seeds ..... i always wanted to see if they really come close to finishing in 45 days .... not quite ready to flower the sativa .... but the other pheno is like the heaviest yielder ever . now i know why so many strains are crossed to sk#1 . yay! can't wait to see how yers are smokin" many blessings, hidingtree
Gaiusmarius Hey man! I like the link you posted. If I keep up with my tuckin' and tyin' method most all branches will have their own support, BUT!! I am listening! I know you're gonna kick my ass till I get a screen going across there...I just gotta get a free minute to find something that will work and get it situated in there. I'm definitely tired of doing all the tying! Maybe I'll swing in the hardware store tomorrow and pick up some fencing or something to give me a screen. I would REALY love to maximize my yield this time, and the way I've got them splayed out with string will give me a good start if I can get a screen in there now.
hidingtree I have no doubt you'll be happy with the sk#1. My clone finishes in about 60 days and is a pretty even indica/sativa mix. The buds are VERY dense, and get big and fat for sure. Mine has a sweet candy skunky smell that comes through in every last hit when smoked. Mine isn't a pungent skunk, more sweet delicious like rock candy or something.
Here's a side by side picture of the two sk#1 in the room now, and the four plants that I ran last time. Judging by current size, I'd say we're gonna have a VERY nice yield, all of which will be sk#1 this time! If my DP BB clone survives, I might actually do a run of that one day too.
This is now:
That was then:
Both of those are about day 2 flower. You can see we have enough plant mass built up for the stretch, and the closet should STUFF up just the way I want it to again! So, less plants, much better and faster growth. Same or better yield.....I hope!
High S2d, great grow show going on here! Just had one question: Is your new pump submersed or are you running a line? I've heard something about pumps with magnetic drives stripping nutes (due to some anion-cation explanation that I didn't understand) if they are submerged. Anywho keep up the good work.
the rocheklip Hola man! The new pump is indeed submerged, and yes, there is a slight possibility of a magnetic pump causing nutrient disruptions. I was a level 2 regen tech for anion/cation resins used for the deionized water filters everyone here uses at a very large water company, so I understand the theory. However, I can tell you I've never had a problem, and I'm sure something would have shown up with some of our pumping systems in the factory if that was a major issue. I believe the actual drive unit is sealed and thus negates any affect it may cause with nutrient solutions. In most cases you only have the end of the shaft and impellar exposed to the solution. Stability in our nuetralization tanks was crucial, and we never had issues caused by pumps. Also, I believe, if the pumps were an issue, pond pump makers would have some serious trouble because of nutrient and ph issues with pond plants and fish. One last thing is, I think the pump wouldn't have enough potential for ion exchange to affect the amount of water in your mix/pond anyway due to it's very nature. If it had the potential to exchange a large amount of ions, the pump would wear out very rapidly as well.
I'm theorising, but I think these things would hold true.
Gracias for the explanation. I sort of get it, as long as it doesn't cause any problems hooray. I can talk politics or literature all night, but I can't get much further than the on-off switch on water pumps.
So, here we are at one week of flower. We still have a good week and a half of stretchin' with this strain, so no doubt we'll have a good go. I think I flowered these at just about the right time to get the most out of my space. At least I hope.
I'm just going to let off with a bunch of photos because these plants are looking so healthy. I am still finding the scale, but not nearly as much damage. These plants are the healthiest I've ever grown, so I'm sure the yield is going to be good...not to mention tasty!
The ladybugs are starting to do real well from the looks of it. I think I found one laying eggs too, which is GREAT news. I haven't vacuumed up all the dead ones yet because some have just fallen down, and are not dead, lol! They seem to congregate on the plant closest to the box fan in there. I guess they like the breeze?
Anyway, these photos are just to show what they look like now because I'm so thrilled with their current health. We will be tying, tucking, and trimming a little bit to make sure we get as many tops as possible this time. Screen will have to wait for next go round just because my busy schedule hasn't allowed me time to manufacture something....and I have someone who knows how the tying works....
Various shots of the sk#1.....look at the COLOR!
And for fun....here's my DP Blueberry clone I have saved from the grave. She is very indica dominant, which is part of why I chose her. Her buds were very frosty and had good color too. Can't wait to run this next time if it keeps doing well.
Last, but not least, is my pineapple clone. It's not doing the hottest, but it's still in the game of life. I am working on turning this one around....I would really like to run it too.
