A) Stunting through small pot size shouldn't affect the flowering time, but won't let your plant get to it's full potential size either. Start in a decent size pot - 1-2 litre or more, and transplant up immediately at sex and you should be good.

B) Leaving an AF in a small pot too long they can be in danger of being underfed/developing deficiencies very quickly, they can recover somewhat given food and a transplant into more fresh soil.

C) If you stunt a seedling through nutes being too hot in my experience that will add time and leave you very little.

All the above can leave you with a bud on a stick. C is the worst in my experience.

There are different degrees to how badly a plant can be stunted though,

I've done all of the above in the past!

You just want to give them as stress free seedling stage as you can really, and then when they are in the pre-flower growth spurt the more soil/light you can give them the better they will do. Although there are limits to how much volume of soil they will actually be able to make use of, however more soil will help later on as it will have more nutrients available. AF's will pretty much grow 4-5x the size they were at sexing

Anyway that wasn't meant to be a scare story mate, get the basics right on not stunting and they really are the easiest, quickest plants to grow :)

Cheers for clearing that up mitch.

I'm on holiday in one week so they will be in the biger pots tonight.

Think i will layer the soil so there is a "hotter" mix further down and a lighter free draining mix at the top.

Bottom Layer will be my normal Veg mix but with a small handfull of growmore pellets (not organic i know but the raw nutes are exactly the same as FBB) i think this will help them late on.

Mid layer will be my normal Compost/John Innes/Sand & Vermiculite with FBB.

Top layer for the the transplant will be the same as above but without the FBB and more sand.

I have been checking the bottom of the pots daily and only just saw a root last through a drainage hole last night. Was gonna pot them on straight away but the Mrs was out and the playstation was calling me.

haha, yeh layering works, I've done half and half mixes for seedlings when i've been short of Light soil - stronger at the bottom lighter on top, and also mixed completely light and strong soil and haven't had a problem.

Some AF's were ok in the stronger soil to start, but i don't like risking it as if you burn stunt them badly when they are tiny you may aswell scrap them in my experience.

So I don't like to take the risk thesedays, and the light soil is £5 a bag cheaper.

I've grown pretty much exclusively in Biobizz soils though, so don't take my word as gospel, but I'm sure you know what you're doing anyway :)

but I'm sure you know what you're doing anyway

^^^ I do have my Advance Cert with the RHS :tiphat: But that didn't really cover growing Auto strains of cannabis on a shoe string.. more Hardy Ornamental Stock Production, Nursary Layouts and Regs, Lawn Establishment & Maintenance etc etc.

I'm on a real budget at the moment so every thing has to be improvised..

I found out on my other plants that Focus Payless multi purpose was only good enough for about two weeks growth.

Splashed out a bit since then and brought some westlands growbags which will be my compost element of the mix.. with some payless grow cubes (I know i'm a cheepskate.. but feeding the family comes first). I do like my John Innes though.. I brought No.3 this time as it came in a bigger bag but will be carefull with it.

My understanding is that the number reflects the amount of base ferts it has in it per Cubic foot, ie JI No.3 = 3oz / Ft'3

I use kids sand as its clean and cheep and can't bring myself to pay for Perlite & Vermiculte on a visit to the Nursary.

Anyway i'm waffling now..

Just Edited that about four times so i didn't sound like a big head., lol

Right in an effort to get this onto the next page here's another quick update.

Repotted last night into the final 11litre pots.

picture.php

picture.php

The bottom layer of dirt and mid layer ended up being:
60% John innes No.3
40% Westland growbag compost
A good dose of vermiculite
4 Oz'ish FBB
the bottom layer of each pot had a handfull of growmore pellets 7-7-7

picture.php

The top layer was:
50% John innes No.3
50% Westland growbag compost
with a good dose of of vermiculite (more than bottom & Mid)

and here they are looking very lonely in there new homes.

We got a good start here :) I won't be surprised to see these grow to at least 70-80 cm each like that if the genes are up to the challenge.

Hey Blackone,

Thanks for the encoragement.. I'm guessing when they are a bit bigger SDS or Mitch might be able to tell what they are. in an ideal world i get 2 different females and one male so i can make a good stash of seeds.

Only time will tell.

Big up Big Eggy.

Thought I'd have a nosey in your back garden. All looks good to me, I'll keep checking back mate.

I can really see the appeal of the autos. Got some meself in me greenhouse & borders. Wish I had started earlier, would probably have some smoke now and more seeds.

Know where your at trying to do things on a budget, I'm in the same boat mate. I bit the bullet six weeks ago and splashed out on a bag of peat, bag of top soil and some compost. Got some perlite and vermiculite from Wilkos, cheap enough. Best thing I ever did for me grow, in & out :good:

Anyway mate good luck for the season.

hey RudeDog,

Yeah wilko is great but my nearest one is like 10miles away.. and with petrol at £1.36 / litre and climing i can only make it when the Mrs needs her bit n bobs.. then i've got the double buggy and all the paraphernalia you have with kids.

My local nursary where i brought the growbags wasn't too expensive TBH.. the growbags were £1.85 and the compost in them is really nice.. i should have brought thier 3 x 50litre bags of westlands Multi purp with added JI for a tenner but i wanted to get some bedding plants and "get of my grass".. bloody cats round my way love my front garden.

Wow.. that turned into a proper sob story.. lol.

Edit: Yes page three .. dont have to lool at that dude anymore.

Holiday in 5days!!!!!.. i hope it's hot in Cornwall.. and here in the midlands too but could do with some rain in the middle for the plants.

how long you gonna be gone?? who is to water the plants while gone?

SGS

Mrs sister is gonna be staying over with her boyfriend. But if the weather stays like it has been I doubt the will need it. I watered my other regular plants last sunday and the could have made it another couple of days but we just had more rain. Have instructed them to give then a watering halfway through my trip. Weather out look looks like there will be some rain here though.

Well i came back on Friday but didn't manage to get into the garden until saturday to inspect my plants..

Bad news ; (

all the rain and the slugs came out.. I've never had a problem with slugs a young plants so i had no protection... this was a big mistake!!!

AF #3 got ravaged.. s/he might pull through but i thing that it will be stunted. AF #2 got a bit of a nibble but should be ok. AF #1 (the bigger one) escaped completly.

i will update tomorrow with some photos.

Hey SGS,

Nothing has shown sex yet, but we have had really bad weather for the time of year so i think that has slowed things down a little.

To be totally honest i'm not to happy posting pictures of the slug damage as i dont want to put your strains in a bad light for my stupidity.

But here it goes.

this is a group shot i took on sunday.. The AF's are at the back.
picture.php

AF#1 is the biggest (back left)
No slug damage what so ever.. maybe it has something in it that they didn't like? really broad indica type leaves.

AF#2 (back center)
A little slug damage, took off the cotyledon and the first true set of leaves and nibbled the secondary set. Hopefully this one will pull through.

AF#3 (back right)
Major slug damage, cotyledon, first true leaves gone, secondays mostly gone. as you can just about see there apical meristem is still there but i fear this much damage will stunt this little one. I will keep it going and see what happens.. a bud on a stick is better than no bud.. or better a few nanners for some pollen chucking.

I'll get some better pic's tonight as i took this one for my other thread.

Can i ask a question SGS..

I know you don't advise crossing AF stains with Reg Strains.. But would i be able to use AF pollen to cross to one of my White Widows to make a F1 cross with a shorter flowering time? These would be for personal use?

My White widow finishes in 10-11 weeks indoors and begining of November outdoors, so not really suited to the UK climate. The two lager plants are to the left and right are my last two WW S1's from seed, I'm hoping that the large plant in the middle Kosen Rufu(Petrolia Headstash X Cripple Creek X Vietnam Black F2) will be a male as it finishes 1st week of October... but if i'm un/lucky was considering using AF pollen.
