'Shine is mostly a regional thing all thru Appalachia & the Ozarks to a lesser degree. Lots of outdoor cannabis, too. Part of that is tradition, like growing Coca in peru, cannabis in Lebanon or opium in Afghanistan.

Thsy all do what they do because it pays better, despite the risks.

Moonshine is generally cheaper than store bought liquor, sometimes a helluva lot cheaper where liquor taxes are high. That's a factor for people who don't have a lot of money. Check it out-

I don't think they have much of a tradition of moonshining in OR & WA.

Every state has some type of 'shine/hooch going on. In OR/WA, it's bramble berry brandies...pretty good, I must admit! And alcohol percentage much higher than typical brandy. Blowing out birthday candles you get flames before they are extinguished! ;o)

I had some shine and brandies at a party at my sisters house last holiday season.
Her husband is career LEO, and he handed me a glass and told me to try it.
Kinda weird but the hooch was amazing.

yeah, LEO gets some pretty good weed & shine. part of it from confiscations, some as "professional courtesy" from folks they meet on the job...:tiphat:

the market for moonshine is HUGE! if you want to see for yourself, just look at how many companies have copper stills for sale on ebay. copper is too expensive for folks to build those things if folks aint buying them. lots of people buy them just so they can jab their thumbs into the taxmans eyes...lots of do-it-yourselfers out there.:tiphat:

I've always wanted to get into distilling as a hobby. :) It looks like fun. From what I've read, no one cares if you distill your own liquor at home. The cops only go after people who sell untaxed liquor as a business.

I can get a 1.75 liter bottle of Kirkland vodka for $14 at Costco. That's a lot of decent quality vodka for a cheap price. If I start making my own, it would be for fun and for the experience of learning how to do it. Not for saving money.

it is fun, and LEO really doesn't care unless you sell it. it is a family tradition for me, I had relatives on both sides of the family tree that were moonshiners, bootleggers etc. you still stumble over the occasional still around here if you aint paying attention. makes my hair stand on end when it happens. if walking up to a cinderblock building a mile from the closest road and smoke coming out the chimney don't make yer butt pucker, then you aint thought it through sufficiently...rolls of copper tubing lying around, camo net draped over it covered with leaves so it looks like the ground from the air...:yikes:

State level MMJ has always been in conflict with federal law, allowed to exist only by the graces of 3 successive presidents.

Speculate all you want, but this bill would make MMJ legal at the federal level, an enormous step forward. The Obama admin obviously has no intention of letting anybody in the federal bureaucracy inhibit state level MMJ at all, not at this point.

Shee-it, Sherlock- they're riding the legalization train & it's picking up speed. Congress is just running to catch up.

here's some of the stuff that smells bad to me, again just my opinion
this isn't being given much focus in the corporate media, it's being kept low key
where's the dialog? a big step like this needs public discussion
no visible discussion with the canna community, maybe it will get better
what i fear is you'll have a sched 2 drug with no currently accepted uses
that is the federal vision of MJ
no widespread dispensing until clinical trials done, i.e. never
FDA has to give the blessing, fucking tools, that just doesn't sound real to me

Changes and any redirection, ridding antiquated laws take time, revision, committees, etc. Don't expect overnight changes, but changes do happen.

I think any evidence of medical and therapeutic benefits of cannabis shoots holes in the Federal’s stance and policies on it. As more and more publicity of this gets out it really shows their way of thinking is flawed and it’s time for change.

From non MMJ state senator Lindsay Graham of S. Carolina:

Thank you for contacting me regarding medical marijuana. While I am against legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes, I do not want to stand in the way of families with sick children if medical science can verify its safe use and beneficial effects. I will take a common sense approach to the use of medical marijuana when the Senate considers this issue. I appreciate the opportunity to hear from you.

My job as your United States Senator is to represent your interests. While I cannot guarantee we will see eye-to-eye on every issue, I can guarantee you I will give your thoughts and opinions the consideration they deserve. Hearing directly from you about the problems facing our nation helps me better serve constituents like you and the people of South Carolina as a whole. I hope you will always feel free to pick up the phone, write, or email about this, or any other issue, that comes before the Senate.

If you are online, I would also encourage you to visit my website -http://lgraham.senate.gov- as it has information on the most recent activities before the Senate. While there you can also sign up for our e-mail newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages which will provide the latest information, and my up-to-the-minute views on the major issues facing our nation.

Thank you again for taking time from your busy day to contact my office. I look forward to hearing from you again in the future and truly appreciate the opportunity to represent your interests in the United States Senate.

I'm really more concerned about this splitting the community & the MMJ crowd getting complacent about what they have vs the ultimate goal for all of us, which is legalization.

"I got mine" attitudes wouldn't be helpful at all. Prohibitionists are just trying to pull back & regroup, build MMJ only defenses. If we keep the pressure on they won't be able to do that & we can roll right over 'em, force legalization at the federal level, too.

We're already getting some of that from the big names in MMJ, the Stanley Bros being the most obvious. Move out of CO because of "dope pushers?" Really? Don't talk shit, just do it. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out, either.
