Seedling worries

Hey all,

Not sure if this is a real problem or me just worryin a bit! I've got 5 GH WW seedlings which are a week and two days old, and one of them seems to have mottled light patches on the leaves, and all of them seemed a little twisted on the first set of true leaves - they're on their second set of true leaves i think (they each have one set of single finger leaves and one set of three finger leaves). They're under 36watts of cool flourescents for the moment (about 1 inch away), and temps vary between 21.5c and 25c. They're in plagron light mix and i water with ph6.5 water when the top inch or two of the soil is dry. I tried to take pics but my camera didn't show up the colour that well! Anyways as i said i might be just worryin too much but i wanna give them a good start lol.

All help much appreciated -

Bones

I'm not a pro, but i think that might be high ph for some micros, that could cause that. I probably would just give them regular water ph 5,5ish and add ferts in a week or so, but i really don't have too much experience, just think some micros wont go in with that high ph

cool thanks, I just posted a thread in organic soil forum askin if anyone knew what plagron contained in terms of micros, i'll drop my ph a bit but they don't need any water till tomorrow at least so i'll wait n see what sproutco says. I was planning on giving them some v. weak formulex in about a week or so if they need it cuz the npk of the plagron says 12-14-24 at 1.5 and i thought they might need a bit of nitrogen in the next couple of weeks??
Thanks dude,

Bones

That sounds like a good idea. Yes, could probably go a bit up on N, but wait for the Sprout

I would check the ph first, what soil mixture do you have your seedlings in? Is it rich in nutrients? What brand is it? How old are the seedlings?

Sounds like a good plan to lower ph slightly. Adjusting fert water ph to about 6 after mixing gives good results. Things to use are in my signature below "how to make your own ph up and down".

Thanks sprout,

I already have ph up and down (bit stupid of me to buy the down but nevermind), i'll try adjusting to 6 for their next watering and see if it helps!

Stitch - I'm trying to find out exactly what my medium contains, it's called plagron light mix so i hope it's not too rich in nutrients. it says on the bag that it's npk is 12-14-24 at a strength of 1.5?? they're a week and three days old and on their third set of true leaves now. i haven't tested my runoff ph yet but i'll do that today when they get a drink.

Thanks a lot

hey all, back with pics

I watered last night with plain ph 6 water but it seems to have got a bit worse since then, they look twisted on the newer leaves now.

Group shot

this one's a bit of a runt

All help would be greatly appreciated - along with any info on plagron light mix, I checked the plagron website but it has no details atm

Thanks again

Best bet is to not use soil that has nutrients already added. They are normally way to strong for seedlings. Very good chance of burning the little boogers. If there is a Home Depot nearby, go grab a bag of Pro-Mix, you'll be happy you did.

If things get worse, try giving them a weak dose of ferts that contains all the micros:iron, zinc, copper, boron, molybdenum, and manganese. Continue adjusting ph.

Thanks torc, I've got no cash to get any new soil for about a week, do you think they'll be able to deal with the light mix till then??

Is it likely that they could get strong enough in the meantime to be potted out with light mix in a week or so, or would they start to burn if left as they are?

The lightmix says npk 12-14-24 at 1.5 on the bag: is 1.5 the e.c?

Oh yeah, would flushing them a bit help?

Also, would it be okay to give them a little ph'd water even though i watered them last night?

I just want to give enough to test the ph of the runoff cuz ive been reading through mynamestitch's brilliant sick plants thread, and it looks a lot like high ph.

Do I use ph 6 water to test runnoff with?

Hi sproutco. I already read that this morning - I don't have any distilled water, I just use ph'd filtered water. I might of missed something in your post about ph in to test but i'll have another check.

Much Thanks

Is that the same as car battery top up water?? I think i saw some lying around in my house. I tested my runnoff ph with ph 6 water and it came out about 6.3, they're still a bit wavy but looking stronger now - im hopin they're gonna grow out of it cuz i'm not really sure what to try next!! I was gonna transplant them into bigger pots today, i'll post some pics later on when i'm done.
See ya,

Bones
