I do not understand a single thing about American Football. I have watched on TV and gone to games in person. One time I was a game in another city with my Seattle stuff on and nearly got into a fight. The Seattle Seahawks were winning and a person sitting near me was bitter.

It happens because the human race is still very much within the feudal state of evolution, so many people have this tribal sort of attitude, where-by they feel the need to hunt and get bloodied 'for the tribe' or nation, whether they are Russian, British, French or any other group/nation that you care to mention.
