Red' Greenery's 150 HPS Cab

I've used bleach for cleaning beer brewing equipment. It's strong and a small amount goes a long way. 1 tbsp/gal is enough to kill mould and disenfect just about anything. I saved my jars a long time in advance so the smell went away on it's own.

Overall my grow works out to 0.7 g/w which isn't too bad for a small grow. The Shiskaberry pheno at 2.25 oz produced an excellent 0.84 g/w while the Dutchy was poor at 1.5 oz produced 0.56 g/w.

I've used the g/w measurement to check out grow methods to see if they are worth pursuing. Fluoro tubes were real low at .4 g/w Most first grows are .2 - .3. The good CFL and HPS growers are .7 to .8 range in cabs. I think the 1 g/w is more realistic for a growroom where the plants can grow much larger.

Thanks High & Lonesome!

Hey MJ - I really love my HPS. I thought the HPS would be harder to cool but it's about the same as the 252 W of CFL's. My yield is better but I'm also running better nutes too!

Bump for the micro-cab growers! Enjoy! CFLs For The Win! Still no flowering nutrients, but I'll purge that problem soon! Enjoy her while she's small!

Ooh looking fine Budless - looks like you have the nutes dialed in!

My Shiska reveg just started popping shoots after 12 days of 24/7. Now on day 14 there's about 4 nice shoots out. This is the fastest I've seen a plant turn the corner. I think cutting the rootball and repotting make a difference and I've been feeding with fish ferts 5-1-1 at 1/2 strength.

The Dutchy hasn't shown any new life yet and the old stuff is starting to wither. I hope it pops leaves soon. This plant took more abuse at the end of flowering. It was flushed and starved and then sat in the flower chamber for 2 weeks.

how often do you add ferts when yo uwater? i think a problem i was havign was i used ferts every time..just not full strength. when they get watered once a week should i fert every time or every other time? can anyone shed some light onto this.

also on a side note i am using peat pellets for the first time to start my seeds in. hoping to go hydro with them as they will fit in my rockwool nicely but ive yet to acquire a hydro setup. so itll prolly go into soil..are they any good?

Plant's roots pull in water and nutrients in a weird, but ingenious way. Nutrients usually exist as ions and molecules that are hydrostatically attached to soil outside of the root cell's epidermal cell layer. The epidermal cells actively pump ions(usually H+ ions IIRC) outside the cell membrane into the watery soil. Many nutrients are water soluble so when they enter water they break down into their ions. These ions that exist in the water then flow inward due to a gradient caused by lack of ions inside the cell walls and the high amount on the outside of cell walls. The needed ions flow inward which creates an area inside the cell wall that has a high concentration of ions with a low concentration on the outside, thus water flows into the cell in suit of the ions by diffusion toward a higher gradient.

Watering too often with nutrients can cause the gradient to be unbalanced in a way that does not favor the plant's uptake of the nutrients. That's just my idea though...

Anywho here are some more shots in Day 23 of flowering

Hi Darren,

that's a real interesting question about how . Ideally you should add nutes at the same rate that the nutes are being consumed.

With Shutz and Peters 20-20-20, I've always tried to feed on every watering and increase and decrease the concentration as the plant needs it. You have to watch out as the plant gets rootbound it needs more water and it's easy to overfertilize. Feed - Water works well.

I'm trying out the AN Sensi 2+ program more or less. It has a weekly feeding schedule and I will use plain water if it needs watering in between the weekly feeds. Basically I follow a Feed Feed Water program and when the plant gets rootbound I go to Feed Water.

Some of the fertilizers will say to use one concentration for weekly and another concentration for monthly feedings. That can be a good guidline to follow too.

Hey Budless - oh yea if you overwater it causes problems with the plant that look like pH lockout. I think Darren is asking how to finess the nutes and come up with a feeding shedule.

Hello Red, I am new to this site and I love it. I especially enjoy reading your tutorials. You should write a book on all of the different types and methods of micro-grows that you have done.
I was wondering if you could show me how you wired that 150 watt hps security lamp with a power chord for a wall outlet? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Peace

Things are going well in my cab. She drinks like a champ and I love her for it! I like FoxFarm a lot because this run with Ak-48. I'm sure there are better nutrients to use out there, but for my needs there are none. What do you think Red? You helped me get her where she is, thanks!

I'd really like to see some people post up their HPS-grown plants to help convince me to switch from CFLs.

Looking fine Budless!!!

Those FF nutes are top notch organics. Your girl is a nice lush green and I can't see any def's. You're gonna have a nice little harvest from her!

My first HPS grow turned out really good and I'm happy that I switched. For the most part, CFL's and HPS grow nice plants. It's up to the grower to do his job too!

I found that the HPS really pushed the plant hard during early flowering and the plants didn't seem to grow an excessive amount of leaves. With CFL's the plant seems to be running a bit in veg mode all through flowering. It seemed to take longer to get the buds to set and plants grew more leaves especially during early-mid flowering. I did notice that my plants weren't as lush and green.

I think a mixture of HPS and CFL would be best to give the plants more of a mixed spectrum of light.

Hey there Spliffdiddy

I used Sugabear's tutorial on rewiring the security light to remove the light sensor from the circuit.

http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=36344

It took about 5 minutes to get it going. I didn't bother to go into details cause Suga's guide is all ya need.

Thanks Red, Yea I found Sugarbears tutorial a little later after posting that question to you. His tutorial is going to come in real handy, cause I found me a 150 watt hps security light for $38 (brand new) at this website right here www.e-conolight.com .They have some really good deals there. Thanks again,
Peace

so i got one of these type of cabs today...was on clearence from wally world for 40$. its 28 l x 72 h x 20 d inches....was curious as to why you left so much head room..could i say use the bottom for veggin? or do you think it would be too short....

EDIT so im gonna just go with a flower cab on tis one..but im curiuos if i should hang the light from the top on the cab...im afraid it might fall. should have pics up tomorow and un update of my grow.

so i got it all up and running...temps were about 85 with a 57% humidity....i attached the blower to a 4in dryer duct hose, then it goes threw a hole in the shelve to get to the hps..then the duct goes into the top of the light...i took the glass out to get better air flow. the exaust of the blower is 7x3=21 sq in...the intake is 20x2.5 for 50 sq in. the hole for the intake is at the base of the shelve where the plants go so it can draw air up and out. hopefully i can start to flower soon.

EDIT to add pics

Do you veg. and flower with the 150 hps or just flower? If you veg with something else what is that you use?

Hey Bongosaurus - I not growing right now. I got working on a big job at work and pulled a ton of OT with no days off all summer. I'm just getting back to normal and am thinking about growing again. I'm just starting to look at all the pretty plants in the forums.

My reveged girls were doing just great. They came back to life and I had repotted them into larger pots. I kept them going until a heat wave hit and I missed watering them for a week.
