What about the 70s when Sam began his projects?
So why would Sam call his variety "SKUNK" if it didn't exhibit that trait to begin with.
Do you think he was intentionally trying to mislead people into buying a sweet strain?
You must realize, by now, that SKUNK #1 existed long antecedent to the variety showing up in those catalogues.

@fire in the sky, There's no difference today than yesterday Sam wholesaled seeds to people who made crosses and inbred them to capitalize on the new fad back then. Who would of thought they started the cannabis revolution to were it stands today. So there are many combinations of skunk out there it was the game changer.

That green catalog I posted said the seed was made in 1985, I would almost kind of believe it if skunky skunk was being sold in the 80s. In the 80s indoor growing was just starting, this is when the popularity really started to take off.
Now if we are to say skunky skunk only existed pre 80s I find it harder to believe and even less likely anyone here would have tried it or had it.
I don't know why it's called skunk, it's one of those old mysteries, even more so why is the lineage said 2 different ways, Sam says it's afgan, mexican and columbian, the ssc catalog says it's afghan, Columbian and thai so what was it?
Obviously there was a lot of confusion surrounding skunk 1 even back then.
I do know this, if sweet skunk 1 was derived from skunky skunk 1 you'd think those recessives would have popped up at least one in 35 years.
Even the Afghan in those old catalogs were not said to be stinky.
I think if there was some sort of Rks back in the day it was probably nl x skunk, super skunk, afgan skunk etc... something people would have been growing indoors thru the 80s or 90s. If you do enough research you will still see ppl say skunk phenos can be found in shiva skunk and shiva shanti and a few of the old sensi hybrids.
As for the name why is gOrillia glue called gorilla glue? Does it smell like gorillas? How about Albert Walker? Does it smell like Albert walker? A name is sometimes just a name

Afghani Special from KC Brains is skunky like UK Cheese according to some people. Haven't grown mine yet.
Devil from MrNice is skunky they say, but it's not pure afghani, has Skunk in it.
According to Madjag, Sacred Seeds Skunk#1 was skunky in 1980. Check out his Skunk#1 1980 grow pic thread.
Also Nevil said some Sam's Skunks really were skunky.
It was the Mazari afghan that gave Skunk the skunk smell. See quotes from Sam on page 38 on this thread.

I have no problem with people posting as long as it's about plant types, breeding, etc.

People want to have their theories..and other people don't believe in them. Only on the internet do people talk about road kill skunk. That whole term came into existence on the internet. I know a lot of old timers...and they sure never go on and on about Skunk. They talk about LSD and Thai stick...but not skunky Skunk.
