Mr. Fontazy, sounds like you surprised yourself with your own strength. Are you still craving alky? I quit Thanksgiving before last, so around 14 months now. Cravings for alcohol are gone. I even drank a water at the bar on my birthday, and when a woman asked if I ws gonna drink a beer, I answered: why?

This has been a tremendous improvement in my life. Health is much better too. I may be stoned all the time, and not any good for anything but mowing grass, but so what?

After a few attempts I am now 34 days alcohol free and feeling pretty good. I was drinking every night for decades; not as heavy as some but still much more than I should. I am also taking a break from cannabis (planning 6 weeks) but want to make the alcohol mostly permanent.. The catalyst for me was that my adult son was developing a problem so I gave up to support him, and be the role model I should.. I would do anything for my kids. We have done this together, and I am more proud of him than myself. His drinking was heavier and reminded me of my habit when I was his age.

I haven't found it as hard as I thought once I had gone a few days. I do have the odd craving but so far winning. I even have a 6 pack of beer in the fridge and bottles of wine and vodka in the cupboard. I am keeping them as proof that my willpower can beat temptation.

Good luck with this everyone, and great to hear of the wins.

Proud of all of you.
9 years without a drink here. Past few days my brain was telling me I need an ice cold non-alcoholic beer. There's still alcohol in it and it's probably not a good idea

Mr. Chi13, you have basically embarrassed yourself into quitting drinking, or scared yourself... either way, you don't want to see your son be a drunk and a failure. Very commendable that you are changing your behavior to change his, and a good motivation to really quit drinking. A good leader leads by doing, not directing. Best of luck.

Nothing wrong with a tolerance break either. LOL, I could use one to reduce usage, but instead I set up tents to source more.

Going to try to stay sober for today. If I manage I'll try to do the same tomorrow. Wish me luck.

If you doubt your ability to resist drinking even one day, you are not skaird enough of wasting a good part (as you age, today is the best part of what you have left) of your life being a drunk. You should be, cause while you may be able to get away with it in your youth, you will pay for it as you age. You do want to survive your youth, don't ya?

I honestly wish you the best of luck. I found that keeping a bunch of bottles of water around helped with the habit of just drinking something, plus I found that I drink a lot of damn water anyways. I didn't know that when I drank a lot of beer... Like 12 bottles of water a day or more. I used to drink 12-24 beers a day. I put a little baking soda in my water which helps my body (and teeth) a lot.
Now I wish I had the last 10-20 years of being a drunk bastard back, cause if I had done the work I should have, I could relax and enjoy retirement better. But no, I was happy drinking beer, and now my worn out azz still has to do the work, and I physically hurt.

So look back with regret later in life, or do the hard things now and improve the rest of your life. Quitting an alky addiction is really hard, but the reward is truly worth it. Besides, think about how much money you spend on booze. I was spending up to $1000/month just hanging around the bar a few hours a day, at $2.75 plus tip per beer, and what I bought my friends. I drink water there now, and find I want to leave after just a few minutes there, cause of all the better things I have to do.

Booze really is a nasty drug.

good luck, mate!
It occurred to me that it may help to find something else to drink you like the flavour of. some nice homemade lemonade perhaps or whatever. Lately I´ve been getting into iced peppermint tea again. 2 bags of peppermint tea, 1 bag of fennel with sweetener, brewed up in a 1.5 L pot, let it cool off, then into the fridge. It´s great and really refreshing :)
or a hot chocolate in the evening, when I like a glass of wine the most ;)

I do drink some booze still, but when I don´t want any for whatever reason, this sort of thing helps.

9 years sober and going here. Just checking in. Went to the Red Sox game last week and didn't have any beer cravings. But earlier in the week went to the supermarket to see how much non-alcoholic beer is. There's still alcohol in it and it's like $9 a 6-pack. .05% alcohol? It's still alcohol. The craving for a cold non alcoholic beer went away.

I second the tasty drinks idea, tea and lemonade, anything natural and premade by you so you can just grab it when you want. i love having a homeade drink ready to go....

I heard the the alcohol-free beer from Holsten really is alcohol-free. They even export it to the middle east
