I've never been to any AA meetings . All I am saying is , if they could cure it , there wouldn't bee any risk of ' falling off the wagon ' Non practicing alcoholic is a good name for us as well . I also just ' walked away ' from it as many do . but I am well aware of the risk that one day the temptation can be to much . Don't take anything for granted , stay sober . There is thousands of people that thought they had got rid of their alcoholism , only to fall off again caused by temptations .

After reaching 270 lbs a few years back I realized a lifestyle change was in order.

This included cutting booze out entirely, for the most part. I was drinking a shitton on weekends at band practice which was a contributing factor to my weight gain as well as several glasses of wine throughout the week.

3 years or so later I am at 185 and much healthier.

I'll still drink, but on average I'll have alcohol at the most no more than a half dozen times throughout the year and thats usually only when I am out at dinner or lunch in a bar.

Don't miss it, don't miss the feeling of being intoxicated, don't miss being around drunks and to be honest I really want very little to nothing to do with booze and I care to not put myself into situations where others are drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

By far the hardest part is always explaining to people that I don't want to go out to bars and hang or go to a happy hour, most people don't get it. I simply have far, far better things to do with my time and money (and health) than drink booze.

I quit drinking a few months ago and I fucking feel great! Alive! Lost 15 lbs too. Cold turkey is no joke though.... that detox just lingers.

There are pharmacological agents that eliminate withdrawal they are non toxic and natural. Three grams of syrian rue seeds are all you need if you are not on pharmaceuticals and have not taken SSRI for two weeks. Iboga works great too but is a little too hardcore for most people I guess. I'm posting this for anyone that doesn't know. I think it's great you got through it but for those that havent they should know they dont have to do it that way when the time comes if they so choose.

In other news my mother told me today she hasnt drank in 2 weeks, dad too but hes on chemo and cant, wtf, I NEVER saw that coming shes hit the vodka hard for over a decade now almost 15 years straight.

I absolutely disagree but to each their own. You can walk away from alcoholism. If you ask me it's AA propaganda...but if AA works for you that's great.

This is Imo very true.. U could right long books about the propaganda aa has melded into society and (even worse) into the medical community.
So many advances have been ignored based on a societal reliance on faith healing.
I've lost 3 close friends this year to drug addiction and I'm kinda mad that the only advice they ever got from society and the medical community was go to aa and pray that ur higher power removes the obsession to drink.
I know aa works for a lot of people... But it doesn't for some (maybe they're constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves)..
Idk just rambling

Ssri antidepressents are contraindicated with harmala alkaloids from syrian rue and banisteriopsis caapi for 2 weeks. They are totally safe otherwise. There are other pharmaceuticals that mess with them too, best to not take any if you are going down this path.

I feel for you mowood I think its insane how this country handles substance abuse/addiction and is why I am so passionate about harm reduction.

Surprised there's no mention of psilocybin in here...

Everyone has their own opinion of AA, for some people it works for some it doesnt...

I was court ordered to go to a few after a DUI, never gone back. - That said, I'm glad I went, I heard some truly horrible shit, stories that I don't even know how people can deal with having lived through it. Stories about people hitting true, very real, ROCK BOTTOM.
As I am much younger than most AA attendees, it really helped me realize how much more of a rock bottom I could hit, and I just don't want to go there, nor do I ever plan on being so close to my own version of rock bottom.

That being said I still drink a decent amount and have posted here a bunch of times for different reasons. But nowhere near as much and irresponsibly as in the past, and seeing posts about people going sober for years always helps, always a good feeling even if Im not at that level yet

Thanks all

I have never been to AA but I have seen it help others. I think meetings can be good for people that are feeling the pain of loneliness.
I have 14 to 15 years with out a sip.
For me it was being honest with myself.
No excuses No BullShit

Congrats to all that make the effort to change. It's all good...I 'celebrated' 16 years this week without a drink. Never, ever thought I would get past a week.

It's been about 3-4 months for me now.... I never thought the clear headed feeling that people talk about after quitting drinking was true...I thought I felt great. It really is unreal, I feel better than I remember feeling my whole life.

U know anything about ibogaine for opiate withdrawal/detox.
I've seen a few shows on it and the people were claiming it eliminated the detox (or at least shortened it by 95%.
