I grew up in house that believed working hard and drinking hard. And thats how I lived my life for 35+years. I got 3 DUIs (in the 80s) but other than that I stayed pretty much out of trouble. I love beer and some times whisky or rum and really couldn't see a reason to stop drinking. However for the last year or so I pretty much stopped drinking (as well as a few other negitive drugs) and just smoke my bud. I can't say I'm happier not drinking, I just have no desire for it anymore.

Viva Colombia!

I go on spurts with drinking, and smoking American Spirits. Drinking comes and goes with me...

Been trying to cut back,.... Normally go thru a 5.5gal keg of beer every 7-8 days,... Vacation this week, and the keg I got on Saturday blew out tonight. 6 days.

I'd say this weeks cutting back was a failure.:

On the plus side, for it blowing as early as it did tonight, I have managed to simply set it down for the night, and am drinking water and watching "Ancient Aliens"

your own beer or homebrew?

Micro brew, Avery IPA. Been my standby in the fridge for about 3 years now.

Managed to hold off on drinking until after 8pm tonight. Really wishing my plants were growing faster, I've got nothing to do in the garden right now. Looks like I even got the fungus gnats that came with my soil licked.

So all I have to battle insomnia is beer and watching SyFy.:tumbleweed:

Mistakes stay mistakes until ya own up to the mistake and learn somethin from it.
Then it becomes a experience which if you share
can save a life beyond your own...

I've been sober for the most part since the age on 20. Now close ta 40.. Drank hard from 13-20. Pepsi and jacks.. umm good tasten stuff..

Spent many a day in A.A. and such.

A few years ago I lost contact with a good friend.
She just dropped off the map. Heard stories of drink and shitty husband. .. She was married so off limits for me, so I didn't try ta find her.

A couple years ago a chance phone call at work somehow lead us ta being on the phone together.

1 good convo led ta another. Next thing ya know we're on a date as she says husband is gone (she was lying)

After a few dank bud filled motel dates. She shares the 5 years since we had seen each other.

Sick fkn dude she married. Durgs/hookers/alcohol. A real class act.

A little time goes by and she tells me shes still married. (Ops)
I don't play that game. She wants a divorce and so on... I call dude and a few long conversations later. Dude's moven out. I moved in (no chit) 2 hours after. Lol...

3rd day with her....
I walk into the bedroom and find her pounding a moster bottle of vodka. Gulp/gulp/gulp.. I like umm.
Should have seen her face.

Im no dummy ta what I saw so im like (I'm fked)

I just pissed off and kicked out dude who pays her rent (Didnt know she had no job) and im here 3 days... Not cool..

I so wanted (almost did) bolt....
Took me 3 days of soul searching and ultimately a coversation with the big dude ta decide and help her.

She had been pounding vodka for 6 years-last 2 really hard... Really reaching out to me for help as she knows me & my past.

Well I knew I was in for a ride but fk me...
Crazy ass chit I won't get into. Crazy...

Going on year 3 together. Losing all savings a truck (sold) 2 evictions-sold 3 horses and so much more. So many fights and very hard days.
Broken heart over and over failed rehabs and a couple ambulance call's later...

I have a girlfriend (soon ta be wife-shhh) that is 9 month's sober the hard way. (Not acting like nothing happened) She is facing what she has done and learning from it.

She now has a really good job making bank and we just bought a house.

Even though she dont like smoking herb, She likes that I do...lol

Not sure why im sharing this...

After spending a hour reading this thread.
Which is great y'all have and are willing ta share.
I feel compelled ta share a thought or 2.

If not for a complete stranger helping me for no other reason that because he could. I would have been dead long ago. (Due ta drinking)

If I had not drank and then owned up to the thing's I did.(rather than just forget)
I could not have help my girl (no way)

There are many ways ta put the bottle down.

There's only one way ta gain certain life lessons.(tools)- experiencing them yourself and surviving.

Ya never know who or when ya might come across someone only you could relate to and help.

No matter how bad your story is.
Stop-learn-forgive and love who u become.
Seems the best path ta sobriety. ..

Weed wont save you but it sure will help you come to terms with who you are...

Wish you all dealing with this chit.. The best that life has ta offer and may
"one day at a time" become your most powerful tool rather that a way of life...

Peace...

Like any addiction, the hardest part is just making up your mind to quit. Once you've accepted the facts and make up your mind, anything is possible. Back in the early 80s, I had a $500 a day opioid habit for three years. Never mind the money wasted, you also lose all self respect. One day I just made up my mind. Locked myself in my house for six months with my dogs as my only companions. Heavy duty withdrawel for 6 long months. No more than two hours of sleep at any time, and each time waking up in a cold sweat as if coming out of a bad nightmare. One day, I woke up and it was gone. You just have to make up your mind. That really is the hardest part.

Man, this is an awesome thread! I am so glad to see people beating an addiction. I beat down this alcohol demon 28 years ago! My wife would not stand for being hooked up with ANOTHER alcoholic and made it clear I had to choose between the family and the booze and I wisely chose my family.

You don't have to worry about quitting for 28 years. All you have to worry about is quitting today. The goal is not to drink today if drinking has led you to create a lifestyle that is out of control. K++ to everyone who is giving it a go. You can do this!

Hockey game tonight and hanging out with the wrong crowd and I slipped up a bit. Telling my friends things like well I cant drink no more results in being called a pussy repeatedly. Sigh. Tomorrow is a new day.

Dare the people that are calling you a pussy to give it up for just 1 game.

That's really f*cked that your "friends" are putting shit on you for trying to better yourself. I had some really bad times on the bottle in my 30's and hurt a lot of people. When i finally hit rock bottom i decided to give up alcohol if not i knew i'd keep self destructing until i was either in jail or dead. Instead of my friends calling me a pussy they supported and encouraged me. I didn't touch a drop for 5 years. Took up fulltime smoking pot. These days i still smoke fulltime but can sit down and have a few and be totally in control of myself. Other times i can party all night long without having a drink. Sure i want to but self control stops me and as long as i'm smoking. I know it's the ammount of thc in me that seems to stop me from getting to that point where i'll step over the line with alcohol. Maybe i haven't said that rite, but hopefully you know what i'm trying to say.
And WATER MAN!! you've got to keep that water flowing through you man. Not only will it stop you from getting as drunk as quick because you'll end up pissing a lot of the alcohol out and you'll start to feel bloated hopefully before you get to the 'drunk point of no return'
You gotta get some new friends man or tell them that you want to be sober and if they don't support you on this it's time to part company.
That's just my point of view mate. Good luck with it.

Oh something that helped me. If i knew that i was going to be around alcohol and living in the real world i knew it was only a matter of time, i'd make myself reflect on the bad things that i'd done whilst being drunk. My conscience soon let me know that it was an easy answer.
