Promix-Your Opinion as a Medium

Good Morning

I was wondering if any experienced growers out there have tried promix as a medium and if so, what their findings are.

Thanks for your time if you comment as I am considering using promix with maybe some large grain perlite.

Your knowledge will and time will not be wasted. My clones are just now rooting so I will need input soon.
Thanks again.

Pro Mix Hp (increased drainage): Peat Moss, Perlite and Dolomite lime. Use for your flowering plants.

Pro Mix Bx (Slow draining): Peat moss, perlite, dolomite lime and vermiculite. Use this mix if you want to slower draining mix. I use to keep my mothers in this mix.

They also offer a fungicide type Pro Mix which I do not think is needed in cannabis growing.

One offering from ProMix that I like is Pro Mix hp-cc. Same as the Hp above but less peat and coco coir is blended in. Even faster draining than Pro Mix Hp.

Used BX for years. Great stuff. I mix perlite with my bx at 3 parts Pro Mix to 1 part perlite, then add worm castings to that.

I pay 26.99 for PM at my local hardware store. That price seems inflated!

Just noticed your in Alaska, makes sense.

I have grown in straight Pro Mix BX with no added perlite, and had great results.
Being in Alaska really changes things, if your on a budget. Everything is so damn expensive, it seems.

I remember learning and reading about growing, years ago now. Mostly High Times and Jorge's Bible. People were using ferts and products that were not available to me, at all. Not even worm castings.

Then a grow store popped up in my state, almost 10 years later, and bam, all of a sudden I was able to buy all these products, I'd been reading about for years.

I can remember being excited!

I went to town.. a store had the HP Promix, but never heard of the HP-CC..
Oh well,
I did get a large bag of CHUNKY PERLITE for 43bucks!!!
OMG

Never had these two items..
I use to grow outside in a southern state, had 2 50x100 gardens.. a troy built tiller and all my soil was black going down about 3 feet.
I had bought 2 acres of land from a farm that was over a hundred years old.. they raised cattle -chickens and stuff.. I could DROP seeds on the ground and they would grow!!! LOL

I miss that I fed all the neighbors.. tomatoes, corn, green beans, broccoli.. and other stuff.. God I miss gardening like that.. now, I can only grow indoors.. for the most part...
Oh well.. LIFE IS CHANGE!!!

LOL thats not even that much more expensive to be in alaska! I love promix. I use Promix HP with the myco already in it and then amend it even more. The growth rates compared to soil is fucking insane. Cuts the flush time down to a couple days instead of couple weeks which allows you to push your plants longer bringing better yields and in my opinion a better flavor when your coco is alive. You can choose to feed 5x a day and grow a plant in a 1 gallon container that will out yield a 5gallon pot of soil in the same amount of time.

I wouldn't add any perlite to promix-hp, it's got plenty, too much for me. If you have perlite you could just add peat. that's what your really paying for with promix though, its already mixed plus it has a wetting agent and mycos. saves a lot of time and mess plus sourcing peat can be inconsistent unless you find a good one. (Alaskan seems to work well)

Can you grow in pure ProMix BX? Yes.
Can you use ProMix BX as a base ingredient for custom mix? Yes.
Can you grow in pure perlite? In a hydro setting, yes. In a container soil/soil-less settng, no (perlite does not hold nutrients)
Why add perlite? To adjust the physical properties of the grow medium's porosity and water holding capacities.

Depending on the type of grow medium, there are different porosity levels as described in this table--

IMHO, there is more to this than---add a little of this, little of that, dab of this and dab of that....there is "a purpose" for everything. The goal is to "know the purpose".

Pro-mix is a great soil-less option for any kind of growing. IMO it needs no further amending....it has plenty of perlite...don't waste your money on extra.

I use Pro-mix Plus HP...it contains a custom myco blend specifically formulated by Premier and a biofungicide (bacillis pumilus).

I landed on this media after battling root born pathogens that were coming in a local soil mix. My crops have totally turned around...and I'm getting root/vegetative growth that I haven't seen in years. It can handle whatever kinds of nutes you want to throw at it. Cheers to Pro-mix..

Is promix something that's readily available? Or do nurseries and landscaping places carry it? Just need recommendations of good soil that I can get local.

I CANNOT GET the darn Pro-mix Plus HP here in Alaska. Will work on that!

PROMIX is not soil.. it is a Soil-Less product used for getting young plants started.. starting seeds..

A person can grow in Promix but you have to know it is not Soil.

I suppose it's all dependent on where you are. I know for myself, it's available at the cpl of local farm and garden stores, in several towns in my area. I've seen the price rise dramatically over the last few years. When I started buying it in the 3.8 Cu Ft. Bales I was paying around ~$22-$25. The price is now $35-$38/3.8 Cu Ft. Bale. Ive not price a pallet but I would assume you would get a slight discount by purchasing a pallet. A buddy of mine used to work at the local farm and garden supply store. His job was fill orders and load trucks, so we had a good system down for a cpl years. I would supply him with some dried bud, and he would fill my trunk, and backseat with as many bales as we could fit ;)

I've been using Promix Bx, and ProMix HP, for years with excellent results. Once I realized the explosive root growth, and growth rates of my plants that were planted in promix, I havent used soil since. I started out using just promix and bottled nutes. Over the years, I switched to PM w/ organic bottled nutes. Over the last few years, Ive been using Promix, amended with compost, EWC, Bone meal, Chicken Poop, alfalfa Meal, Hygrozyme, AACT, additional Mycohrizzae and some other goodies..
Ive never had better results, and Ive been dialing in my mix over the years gradually improving with each grow.

I buy those big bags of perlite from the construction supply store. I believe its used in cement block work to fill the cores. But I get a huge bag at a good price. I mix this into my promix at about 3/1, Promix/Perlite. I do about 70/30 mix of the Promix/Compost.
I would recommend anyone that's been growing in soil, to try just plain promix alongside their soil to see if their plants growth rates improve. I believe its the airyness of the promix, supplying the roots with more oxygen, that results in faster growth rates.
I would recommend, at the very least, amending your promix with Earthworm Castings. The peat is light and airy, and has the tendency to dry out quite fast. The EWC holds a bit more moisture than promix alone, enhancing the ability to retain water. Apart from that, your supplying your plants with the richest organic fertilizer, boosting the microlife of your mix with beneficial bacteria, enzymes, humic acids, and 50% more humus than you would find in normal topsoil. The humus in the worm castings extracts toxins and harmful fungi and bacteria from the soil. Worm Castings therefore have the ability to fight off plant and root diseases. :woohoo:
