Philips 315w CDM Elite (CMH)

Jesus Christ!

I don't have enough time or energy to delineate everything that is wrong with that fucked up mess. Let's start with fire danger, electrocution hazard, more code violations than an inspector could write up, and voiding your fire insurance.

Check out the threads on light controllers in the Growroom Designs & Equipment section, and the Growroom Electricity & Wiring thread.

Actually, I'd be interested in knowing exactly what's wrong with the setup, and how you would do it differently as per code. Maybe then folks might learn something. Other than that, I see a bunch of contactors, wiring and a time clock....all of which I'm guessing is functional. I deal with these types of components all the time(less the receptacles), and it's no different in my application, other than there's an access door that gets closed and a disconnect present. I see wood chips...not so good...and open enclosures.

Fair enough.

There is nothing wrong with the components, the issues all lie in the installation and application. Start with the back plane - if you are going to mount electrical components on wood, it is supposed to be done on fire-resistant plywood. If the components are going to be mounted in the open, they have to be in a restricted area accessible only to qualified personnel and with correct working clearances (that would not include a grow room). All of the knockouts in the enclosure where wiring is being routed should have insulating bushings to keep from abrading the wire insulation. There is no strain relief on the power cord feeding into the time clock. Nema 5-15 120v receptacles are being used for both 120v and 240v. The solid-state timing relays disperse their heat out the back of the device and are designed to be mounted on heatsinks. There doesn't appear to be any identification of the different circuits and voltage levels. The workmanship sucks.

Other than that, it's a pretty sparkly installation.

I've run anywhere from 2' to the buds banging on the glass. I like around 12"-16" for best light distribution.

OK thank's wasn't sure how close I could go. im running out of room. Was thinking I might be bleaching um with the light . I just upped they feed am loosing a few leafs to yellowing. Hard to tell with these 315's getting the natural color. Do they make a set of glasses that will help show the natural color of the plant . I thought I seen where a guy was having trouble with the same issue.

Here is a pic of the purple Wreck she has straightened out somewhat she is a real bitch!! I run 6/9 and she and the Tahoe dont like it for some reason. the wreck curls her lefs claw like N toxic when I ran her before I dropped to 5/9 and she straightened out. then a whie ago I got gutsyand put her on 6/9 again and she clawed again just before I put her in flower. Im impressed with the lights shw is done all that bud in just over two weeks, while she has been sick. I think she has root problems because the guys at the shop were laughing like they have heard stories about her from others. He says why do you even bother if she is a pain in the ass. I say because thats just me , I love a challenge and she has a nice flavor and high. This time will be way better than the last I can tell allreadt she is a beast @ 45inchx 45inch canopy and about 5'10" high. And a pic of another liberty haze who went in all messed up but straightened out a bit under the 315 and put on a nice fat top or 3 that are as dense as hell . Way tighter than the 600 hps.

I don't understand the remark about natural color. CDM's have very high CRI & are widely used in retail display lighting for that very reason. They're very close to natural sunlight.

There so F in brite I cant see my f in plants LoL . I need some glasses so I can look at them. I know its natural light I need to get the one hanging vert up on a reflector so its will not be so low. Going to get a reflector for it quick.

Im torn between d pap 630's or dimlux expert 630 im hearing alot of good things about both units but dimlux is abit better. Has anyone used both or use dimlux's? Are the dimlux worth that bit extra cash?

high @ all,
very very nice thread and so much info's here.
well it's too much to understand...
I have a question about the lamps etc.
1. Is it possible to use the lamps in a vert grow? (i read the CDM are only horizontal)
2. Do you use the lamps the complete grow? like veg and bloom or only veg.
3. Where can i buy the lamps here in EU and what kind do you recommend for vert grow?

many many thx for all the info here!
respect.

Hi Mac i was thinking going the same route as you, i have done some research.
1. Yes you can there is some experimenting here with them.
2. Don't know for sure but they have good spectrum either way.
3. I'm interested in ATL combo 315w 4200k mogul version. If you find a good deal in EU retailer let me know.

You can run the 315w's pretty close to the plants. No way I could have a 400w HPS this close. Next run I'll have a flat, low canopy. This was my first run with the current setup and I didn't train the plants at all, also had to delay flowering due to hot summer weather.

[edit] The several buds with burn marks were 10cm from the bulbs for some time, I had to take out my carbon filter to get my lights higher.

1. Yes. Philips CDM lamps are universal burn. Use only T12 lamps or current mogul base lamps. T9 lamps lack the inner quartz sleeve & are not rated for open fixture operation.

2. CDM lamps can be used for the life of the plants. This is my first grow using them & the plants are doing great 4 weeks into flower.

3. Dunno.

Hey guys,
I know I read it somewhere here about a ballast for the 315 that runs on 110/120V, but have no idea what page that was on.
I have a friend that would love to run one of these in his box, but 220/240V is out of the question.
Anybody know of one?

Thanks !

Any advice on how to optimize light from single bulb in 5 feet area? Parabolic reflector? Bare bulb? Light rail?

Thought I would pop back day 35 of flower, just over half way there. So far so good they seem to be doing the job, very aromatic smells running through the tent, about 3/4 degrees c cooler than when I ran the Gavitas - nice long blooms, going to be some cola sized bottle buds I reckon.

In the past I found I would use 100ltrs per 600w Gavita per week - with these lights the plants are drinking 300 ltrs per week, and I am only burning a total of 1260w.
