Jhhnnn, yes the bulbs I'm using are open rated and protected. You guys are not looking at the bulb I'm using, CMTP150/U/NR936 and running on Philips digital ballast. I'm using it for there R9 values specifically.

I'm still testing some theories on my light setup.

Heres what happened to my CavemanOG strain after adding those as supplemental with my current 315 light grid setup. ;)

What's the part # of the specific Philips ballast? Just so people can get it straight...

wondering does running the converter add anything to the eelectric bill over using the 120volt 315's

If by "converter" you mean the transformer used to adapt the 240v ballast to run on 120v, then no. The 120v fixtures using a Philips ballast also have a transformer built in - all of the Philips ballasts are 240v. Adding a transformer to the circuit would cost you a tiny bit of efficiency over the 240v version, but it would amount to pennies a month. The Welthink ballasts are the only ones that I'm aware of that come in a 120v version, and I would be very surprised if they are as efficient as the Philips ballasts.

Hi All - been coming up to speed with 315 options. I'm probably not going to build but I did come across this link while looking that I could not find with a search in this thread. So I'm throwing this one out there in case it may be of use to someone:

Seems a reasonable price for the ballast and might serve as an alternative sourcing to Advanced.

Nice topic! But could it be a option to make all this info much more understandable info? If i have to be honest, i am lost!... I understand that this lamp get more useable light to plants, and some versions have no UV filter,... then when you guys talk about seperate ballast, etc. i get lost, i personnally want it simple and easy... Have any thoughts about just buying spectrum kings LED?? Seems like the new COB LED from cree really kick ass, but thats is maybe a question for another forum?

Not quite. The mogul lamp, iirc, lets a little more UV through the outer envelope but they're still UV shielded. In North America, if you want plug n' play, search for "sun systems lec". They offer 315w & dual lamp 630w fixtures in both 120v & 240v configurations.

Other makers offer similar equipment in the UK & the Eurozone.

Philips developed the 315 system for commercial lighting. It's only recently that a few manufacturers began offering it in fixtures suitable for our application. That's why it remained in the realm of DIY & why discussion generally revolves around that aspect of it.

Hey Jhhnn. Thanks a lot for pinning that down, lot of you guys are really nerdy, and that can only be positive in my book ;) But I really dunno if it should choose the 315 model, or go the LED style and supply with uvb, cause it seems that some of the good point of useing the 315 system when it comes to the mogul lamp and the UV aspect is not relevant for my use.. Hmmm

What would be the argument for useing the 315 model contra Cree COBs + supp with UVB T5 ??

I really can't answer that question as UVB, LED's & such are esoteric aspects that I haven't paid attention to. I'm nowhere near dialed in enough w/ the rest of it for UV to be a consideration. It seems obvious that excellent cannabis can be grown w/o it.

My interest in 315 systems stems from several considerations. I want more natural expression in the plants which broad spectrum lighting promotes. I want high efficiency for power saving & heat reduction. I also enjoy DIY projects & chasing down good deals on used stuff.

Last I remember when looking into led's is that the general consensus was that led tech is still just not there yet. I know there are new developments with them almost daily, but it's still new tech and people are still trying to figure out how to get them to their potential. That's why at the time I was shopping new lights which was about a year ago I decided to pass on them and go for cdm.

CDM imo is at the very top of the indoor lighting game right now and probably will be for a while.

Also, just to update everyone on my results using 3 cycloptics units...

Final harvest is 52oz.

That's 3 1/4 pounds off less than 1k in cdm.

Needless to say, I am one happy puppy!

Thanks Gloomshade and this run had several problems that came up as you will read. I mean hell I was only at the garden once a week so they pretty much had to fend for themselves. And I did that with several totally random strains many of which are pretty average yielding. I try to have a productive garden but am in no way a cash cropper. I think 2gpw plus is easily within reach with these lights.
