I needed to water my window plant today and the PH in the planter had drifted up again.
I had to PH down the solution and pour it through 3 times to bring it down to 5.8

Some of the leaves are showing signs of PH lockout.
They are looking pale and spotted.

My USB to USB-C adapter plug for my cable arrived,..
It was about 2 weeks ago but I finally got to it.

The adapter was hitting my phone case, so I trimmed down my adapter with my rotary tool.
I didn't want to adapt my phone case to the adapter.

I managed to connect my phone to my camera and the downloads work, so my smartphone is smart enough to talk to my camera.

I took a picture of my plant in manual mode ,..

Wonderful picture,..

I took a few in automatic mode and downloaded them,..

A couple pictures that found their way into the download file somehow??
(my rusty ass car,..)

The fricken camera is way more complicated than I anticipated,..

I have to learn about all these settings before I can use manual mode and get a half decent manual focus picture,..

F♡≠〔K, sakes,..

I just wanted to take a picture of my plant where I had control of the focus,..

Now I have to spend a couple of weeks trying to figure out how to take a damn picture !!,..

There's a hundred settings that I have to learn about and try to set,..

My closet plant was drooping anyway, so I tucked under a bunch of fan leaves,..

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_20220223_200219.jpg Views:	12 Size:	186.4 KB ID:	18081829

I'm thinking of removing a bunch of lower leaves??
They are blocking light that is supposed to go to the flowers,..

Re the new camera, you should be able to set it so that its on auto *except* for the focus, which you can manually adjust. Then you dont need to worry about the other settings at the same time.

In your closet with led lights on, you have to set ISO to the minimum (probably 80 or 100), and exposure time to minimum (1/1000 or 1/2000 or something like that). Flower icon means macro focus, but I guess you were just joking.

White balance is always the best with manual WB (the icon with the two triangles, and one square (or spot) "between" them), point to something white (a paper tissue for example) in the same lighting conditions with the plants (closely next to them), and "set WB". While setting WB the white thing has to cover the screen (so LCD screen all white). Once you set all theese parameters, you can save as profile to C1 or C2, and next time you can worry about the focus only. With a few Youtube tutorials, it should require 1-2 hours, not weeks. It's just an old bridge, not so complicated as it seems at first.

The window plant looks great. Seems to be progressing really fast too.

She's doing OK, but I removed a few more leaves that were turning yellow.

She needs a liter of water every two days and I gave her another liter of water today.
The PH had drifted up again and I had to flush the solution through 3 times while adding PH down every time.

I'm sure the plant would be doing better if the PH didn't keep rising up. She keeps struggling with lockouts and eats her leaves.

I want to find a different container to put the plant in.
It doesn't have to be an aquarium, just something that's bigger so when I add a liter of water it doesn't raise the waterline 3 or more inches.

I think the plant is too wet and the waterline is above the clay pellets after a watering?

Watering the plant is kind of a PITA because of all the flushing I have to do every two days.

So far, the closet plant is holding its PH stable but I suspect that it will start rising up too in the future.

Does anyone know if there is some kind of amendment that I can add to the coco so I don't have to keep playing with the PH?

I know that you can add lime to soil and it helps to stabilize the PH, but I don't know if that works in coco coir?

She's a thirsty girl then. Combined with a small pot that means a lot of watering. But need huge windowsills to fit a big pot... Oh the realities of reality. More perlite in the mix might help.

Speaking of your mix I think it had lime added to raise the pH? So it seems like it's got the exact wrong amendment in it... Not sure what would be good for adjusting in the other direction. My mom is always recommending used coffee grounds but I have my reservations on using them in a soilless mix.

Personally I use Advanced Nutrients Sensi Coco pH Perfect as the fertilizer which has some kind of proprietary pH buffer and don't even measure. But it's a rather "different" (noob) approach. :D Would be going backwards for you.

Here's a thought, why keep her sitting in her own runoff? The runoff is holding the crappy pH you are trying to flush through. Like sitting in dirty bathwater, lol. You are there every day to water her - why not start doing it drain to waste. Maybe the pH would sort itself faster?

Ha yeah not a bad idea. But I suppose the LECA/hydroton at the bottom help with that some, that's how I understood the waterline business.

All this watering talk reminds me that my lights are going off in 15mins and I haven't watered my plants today. Here I am looking at and talking about other people's plants while neglecting my own. I better go show them some love. :D

I like to have a reservoir because I can just keep an eye on the water level and add water/solution when it's low.
I can't really overwater (except when she's young) so I just water every two days now.

Apparently, the runoff is fine to feed the plant as long as you keep an eye on the PH and PPM.

I could run into problems if I have lockout, and those elements that are locked out become concentrated in the reservoir because they aren't being absorbed by the plant.

I've done all this before and never had to bother with the PH.
I didn't even check the PH for many plants and everything worked out OK.

I did have other stuff in the coco before though, like garden lime, worm castings and some peat moss.

The past two grows with just coco and perlite have led to the PH drifting up quite high and quickly, with both my window and closet plants.

The window plant does have roots growing to the bottom of the planter, so it can reach the water right up until the reservoir is empty, but when I add a liter of water, the clay pellets at the bottom of the planter end up submerged and the "soil" ends up wet right to the top of the planter, then it isn't getting any oxygen in at the roots.
I think that's why the roots have stopped growing into the reservoir?

If I were to water normally and just drain it away, I would only be able to add about 150 ml of water before it drains out the bottom, so I would have to start watering her about three times a day. (and that would suck.)

There isn't very much coco in the planter, and it doesn't hold very much water especially with the perlite in the mix.

The runoff is holding the crappy pH you are trying to flush through.
Maybe the pH would sort itself faster?

When I water the plant the PH in the remainder of the reservoir is about 6.2 when it was 5.8 two days before.
I feed her at about 5.5 PH then measure the reservoir and is has dropped to 6.1
I then drain the reservoir, PH it down as low as 5.2 and flush it through again and have to do that 3 times to bring the reservoir down to 5.8

I kinda think that the PH rising is just the nature of the beast when it comes to growing in coco/perlite.
I think it needs to be constantly checked and adjusted?
I don't think that it's something that can sort itself out?

I might consider adding some worm castings, peat and lime next time, but I don't want to end up with a mix that can get too wet and drown my roots.

I had HUGE problems with watering before I switched to coco.
I just couldn't get the hang of it and I would either have muck or it would be powder dry.

I kinda think that a plant is better off having constant access to water as long as the roots can breathe.

My closet plant always has water/solution in the bottom and she just drinks whatever she needs and I keep topping up the reservoir.
