anyone used al taplas gritty mix? you can read about it on gardenweb.com. He has several mixes so make sure you look at this one. There is also a mix called 5-1-1 that uses peat I think.

He has a made a three part mix that you can configure to your liking

something like pine bark fines, turface, and granite grit

do to the large particle sizes used there is no perched water table

I do well with perlite and coco. Turface seemed to hold a lot of moisture to me.

here is a quote from gardenweb.com :

"Equal parts by volume:
Pine or fir bark in 1/8 - 3/8" size (no fines)
Screened Turface MVP
Crushed granite (Gran-I-Grit, in grower size) or #2 cherrystone
gypsum

Al"

(^^ the gypsum is to be added 2-3 tsp/gal not in equal parts as the other stuff)

Still dealing with minor mildew issues...

anyone here have any good likes on understanding mildew and how to get rid of it? I've read many articles on it but still haven't learned enough about it. I'm growing a bubba/OG. It is even on my outdoor plants.

Anyone know if bubba/OG genetics are prone to this? If this is the case maybe I should look for a new strain that is mold resistant. I hope bubba/OG isn't considered mold resistant...

5th week of flower?
No way man. That's like two hundred days of experimentalness:

-LST'd the shit outta her when she was to young to object.
-Kept her in the mostly-dark, unfed and rootbound for about 100 days. Did I mention it was cold?
-Fucked up my timer. So it would cycle randomly.
-Flowered her under plenty of light, in 50 degree temps.

For whatever reason (some possibilities listed above) she never stacked but just fractured. No small leaf set at all... kept midsized stuff and then sent out 'tails. Her sister looks way more like I would expect (sixteen days behind, with a working timer), but wasn't as abused in such a brutal way.

Anyway, she doesn't look like her mom...

She'll be coming down about a week after that photos. Theoretically at 64 days. But the timer was cycling with the randomness for the first two weeks.

Here is a different perspective:

She's all foxtailing, no dense flowers. Her tops are about 5" across, but not very impressive...

jj, i've seen al's gritty mix. this mix that i'm trying should be more suited for hydro apps.

any mix that has so much pore space that it doesn't allow a pwt to form is probably too dry and won't wick very well. maybe a good choice for some plants but not cannabis.

sorry i can't help you with the mildew issue, i've never had it. i can tell you all about bud rot though.

IF, when are you going to get your environment under control? it's costing you a lot of weight.

Trying to get it together. Just operating within some rather substantial limitations right now.

Hey, what does this mean:
i did the porosity test done by the home gardener earlier in the thread and it was barely 20%.

i just did the first part for air porosity. to get an accurate reading you need to let the glass with substrate set for a while and top it off several times. it could take several hours with some materials.

I remember that link. Thanks for saving me the effort in chasing it down.

This is from the lower discussion regarding 'wettability', I presume. I can see how this is a factor in a PPK with coco as primary media. But I suppose it should be relatively easy to use just the first step to get a close-enough-porosity of the performance of your original coco media (atami)... presumably coco, in general, has similar 'wettabilityness'.

damn, DW, you barely got anything to smoke off that pathetic looking little plant!

what's that, about a 2 day supply for you?

Lol, no kidding...

That is my very 1st end to end PPK plant. I can not thank you enough D9. Your research and postings here on IC leapfrogged me at least a couple years ahead in growing skills. I have more time for family and friends, and yields keep going up. Win win!

My last three plants:
4gal coco, 2 blumats - 14.5oz
4gal coco, 2 blumats - 14.0oz
5gal coco PPK - ??

Based on former experience with the plant, I'd put that bucket-o-bud at 16oz+ once it's ready. Unreal... The vertical...the PWT mgmt....the simplicity...it all comes together REALLY nice!

Almost forgot....Jacks Hydro! Probably the biggest improvement I could make in any one area of my growing. Cheap, stable and produces monsters!

super cool! gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling. i think you are looking at close to 18 dry. i've got one of mine dry in a 2.5 gal rubbermaid and it went 15.97.

what plant is that? what lights? and what ec did you feed?

oh yeah, what was the pulse frequency and volume?

D9, that girl is Green House Cheese. Was a lucky freebie I've fallen in love with. To answer JJ's question, it was vegged ~8 weeks but may have been 9. Heavy defoliation throughout. Lights are 1kw hortilux running just about the same distances as you. Funny thing is one side got a cool tubed light and the other a bare bulb. No major difference, possibly a bit more density on the bare side. EC has been at 1.4 for as long as I can remember. Seedlings, clones, veg, flower....all the same. (Sidebar - I tested some seedlings with EC 2.0 Jacks and they were ABSOLUTELY fine. All I can make of that is ratios - you get your nutes in the proper ratios and strength becomes less of a factor). Straight unammended botanicare cocogro. Pulse timing was...well lets just say it was sporadic. I was the pulse feed up until 2 weeks ago. Had the pump, timer, hoses, etc... but never got around to hooking it up. Sooo, for the first 7 weeks of flower, pulse timing was ~ 1 time per day with what I would guess is 2 quarts or so. Last couple weeks, it's 16oz 12 times per day.

Root ball inspection (no pics) showed very strong rooting all the way to the bottom of the bucket and about 2" into the wick tube. Didn't notice any circling around the lower sides. Lots of air roots up top with very little loose coco once it was out of the bucket.

I would have come back sooner, finished the thread about a week ago and took a bunch of notes, but I didn't have anything to ask or add. My first question, about pruning and the meticulous way you started out answered itself... I don't remember how exactly youre pruning in veg, but also read IF's entire thread (props too) and he seems to want to chop the front to test max contrariness. About the only practical question I had, apart from DF was about other media. Rockwell in part. I have a friend who had some rooted clones in rockwool, 1 inch inside 4 inch, and I couldn't advise on whether it'd be acceptable to run a PPK in pure rockwell since I don't know either its porosity or height of PWT.

I know you hate requests delta, but how about a rockwell run? I'd pay a dollar to see that.

That guy's a full blown retard.

I think I have him on ignore.

Don't do a thing he says.

It will, I suspect, end badly.

You should figure out how that DevilWeed character did it.

Rockwool would be funny. I'll pitch in a dollar towards that for anybody!
