Basically I'm wondering if I can simplify construction by just using a taller container.

yea, then you could just add a wick to that and get more nice root zone

either way you look at it having a wick, even a toothpick pking out the bottom will give you more non soaked media...

The wider your pot the more you will benefit from this effect.

D9,

I hope all is well with you.

I was sure you had posted a link to your RO water filter system but I have searched through this thread and could not find anything.

I am currently using tap water approx 150 PPM (EC .3) and am adding Jack's and Cal/Nit to 900 PPM(EC 1.8). everything was going great until I got the top pulse feed going then the PPM skyrocketed to about 1700 PPM (EC 3.4) in less than a week. I have flushed all the nutrients out and refilled everything. The units have been creeping up some and I am looking for a RO filter system to buy to take care of the problem.

Thanks again to everyone who participates in this thread. It has truly been educational and entertaining.

SoorcNor,

I think there might be two separate ideas here...

1. RO is good with Jacks, as it's element ratios are designed for RO. So RO is good. I have some fancy hydro-store brand but I think it's built by GE and just rebranded. I don't remember specifically any link to a particularly cheap or awesome RO system in this thread, but I could be wrong. You're probably all right just doing a little online comparison, or buying whatever is local.

2. If you just added a pulsed top feed, you are probably flushing the residual salts resulting from evaporation from the top of the media. Did you just change out the solution from the system, or did you actively flush the media? I doubt it really matters, and in either case I expect that your EC should find a new equilibrium relatively soon as you continue with your top pulse feeds. You might reduce your bulk reservoir EC a bit in the mean time...

Hey there everyone!

D9, hope the recovery is going well!

I wanted to post this up to get opinions in here and I'll probably start a thread over in the growroom forum. I'm about to rebuild my room a bit - going to double the flower space so I can be even more bored playing with PPK's! :D Other plans I have for a flip-flop will have to wait, just can't swing it for now. This is what I'm currently thinking:

picture.php

The room is about 12 x 16. Lights in that pic are ~52" on center. To give an idea of scale, the light circles and "plants" are set at 40" in diameter.

I like this setup as it gives me the chance to do a couple true monsters in the middle and still do giants on the outside. I can get 6 plants covered by 2 bulbs, 2 convered by 4 and a bunch of small/med/large corner plants if I want. This will be bare-bulb so I'll be able to just swing the bulbs up and hook them on something when I need to work in there.

Based on that footprint, whachu guys think?

DW,

I like it. People might comment that you should have more light on the perimeter, etc., but if I was going to run six lamps and had the papers/courage to run twelve plants, that's exactly how I would do it.

The set up on a room like this is minimal too...

Best of luck to you, and keep us updated/linked to whatever develops...

dmoose is bringing us the vPPK.

I expect some pics.

And soon.

D9s bored, and starting to start trouble on other threads. Give him something new to look at and talk about, other than critiquing folks who don't understand that 'defoliation' is a technique for an artisan, not a mechanic for the insensitive...

Quick recap:

Now, we've got D9's v1.1 (original), then his 1.2 (tote bottom), then his 1.3 (bucket on bucket)...

We've got OO's v2.1 and about to be 2.2... but might actually become a v1.2.3.

Somewhere in there, I(F) snuck in with a v1.2.2 on the tote bottom theme...

Then there's the whole unpictured mPPK phenomenon.

Scrog McDuck added in the cPPK, which both he and I ripped directly from D9's cloner...

This shit is getting some diversity, like a tropical rain-forest.

(Who did the blue bucket system that defied gravity or physics? I'll find that when I'm not so busy. You can see I'm busy, right? I mean, look at me go. Being busy.)

Nice and sorry I missed out, Built my variation of the PPK and ended up getting arrested in hell (whole bunch of BS) now I live in Cali and prop 215 compliant thank god/in Sha Akkah (for the muslims) yeah starting over again and now working for a medical clinic here as well helping other people and starting to cry cause all the time that went... but Id pay D9 to come build it lol that would keep him outta trouble on here

and nice progress ill be rereading this entire thrad again for a third time and btw jacks is the huge difference I found as soon as I swapped my last grow...

Dagger, good luck in Cali!

IF, thanks for the feedback. I'm good for up to 24 in flower so 12 is nice and mellow. ;) I haven't figured out a better floorplan so for now this is it. I really really REALLY :)D) like the idea of having 2 plants surrounded by 4 1k's. With the right veg, strain and rootmass I think a "HeathTree" is possible. Would love to grow a >2lb'er. The rest will just run the normal perpetual schedule.

On another note, I'm now up to 5 PPK's. Only 1 in flower so far and I'm still the pulse feeder...but...progress at least.

I have had massive good luck with the gPPK..

I do not use a wick for germination any longer..

a 1/2 cup container, with a small hole in the bottom, cover it with
screen or curtain liner material or felt. Fill with oildry (8822) or turface.. I cant find turface in my area.. tap water in 1 cup rez and suspend 1/2 cup container 1/2inch into rez. Water will wick up alot.. OK for seeds... putting 2-4 seeds into 1/2 cup container,
in 2-5 days seeds are up and when first leaves are formed, they are pulled out (actually dumped out and pulled from the pile) and put into vPPKs for veging... at 450 nova recipe.. zero failures.. I did pull half the little tap root off of one SD baby, it grew thru the wick that I used to use, but it didn't care.. healthy as a hell..

I work for the Medical Marijuana Clinic that just opened in Carmel-by-the-sea (weird name for a tiny town but its nice) and shes an MD.

Boldness is what I am good at my bust helped propel it to getting SB 573 brought before the senator who brought it up and now its on a vote but I'm not allowed in Oklahomo anymore unless I have a family members death certificate and such for the funeral, or summoned by a judge ... kinda funny money can piss off a state. Being that me and a few friends were the only tattoo shop to completely beat our charges and got tattooing legalized in that bassackwards state, took years of time and loads of money...

I wish everyone the best with their endeavors and I'm back building another ppk (damn it I hate the building part) at least here I'm starting with clones and knowledge! and ordering more jacks and calc nit and digis cause the way D9 broke down weights to gallon helped me a LOT if hes ever in monterey, ca as long as Im stationed here he has a place to stay/medicate lol

hey, people! just a little follow up again to let you all know what's up.

again, massive apologies for not being available but we had a few more complications. when i went back at the end of the first week following surgery they took a culture from the wound and found that i have an infection. not good news if you are an immune system repressed transplant patient.

i'm also swollen from the lower abdomen to the feet with excess fluid.

so, i'm spending most of every day now laying on my back with my feet elevated waiting for the antibiotics and diuretics to do their jobs.

good painkillers, though!

my plants have turned wild now and are growing all over the flowering room. burnt buds and broken limbs everywhere. a real mess.

i was trying to implement a high speed light monitored 5 week veg as a different control over size. it looks promising but i had to hold off on it because of the surgery.

still have not started any beans but will soon.

i'm feeling a little better every day, it's just not going as fast as would have liked.

later

Hope you're feeling better soon, D9..

Thru the website pheonixtears.ca (Rick Simpson) http://phoenixtears.ca/make-the-medicine/

there is a link to "Litro Grow" http://www.litrogrow.com/ inovative fertilizer and growroom aids...

I have no first hand knowledge of either of these sites or their products and I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH EITHER SITE but after watching the vid: “Run from the Cure”, I have a positive view of
Rick Simpson and he endorses it, among others.. interesting reading.

I will post this in the 'growing' forum next..
anyone have any knowledge of Litro Grow, fertilizer or products??

kk now Im getting "settled" in Cali Tiny Grow room I need input and can honestly say I trust the people in this thread with my babies I already have 7 new genes all nice clones and going to use the "cheat sheet" of this thread so I can have a worry free thing going

my flower room is a small 4' deep by 2'7" wide and 5'7" till I hit a shelf what lighting should I use? a 1000w would be overkill and not evenly distribute and I was thinking 2 600w but even considered 3 or 4 400w hanging in different areas but need ideas... and input from what you know

and my top buckets may be a small 2 gallon or just stack 3.5 gallons and train the hell out of em...

and what size valve stem did you use and the size of bit for its hole? I plan on running a roughneck can for my rez and eventually adding the pulse feed but will handwater at least twice a day with straight RO

I plan on having a nice 4 or the 6 in here but may just do two outside after a while in the room

and vegging I dunno if I wanna do the LED panel with CFLs or just a 400-1000W MH/HPS

thanks you guys

starting over sucks but hey at least Im free and helping others here and still tattooing

Hummmm...

How many plants can you/are you willing to flower?

Buckets are about 12" across. So you can theoretically fit eight of them in a 2x4 pattern. But if they're plumbed in as a PPK, how will you access the back plants... well it's probably a closet, so if it's 4' wide, you should be able to access the back corners pretty easily.

Are you interested in running a perpetual garden? If so, when you move one plant out, it makes more flower space for the others in the room... So if each plant has just over a square foot of dedicated foot print, but you harvest every other one, you can have a slightly larger plant than the footprint would otherwise allow.

I would consider two 600s--or even two 400s--horizontal, and flip relatively early. If you stack two 3.5 gallons, that'll burn up about 24" right there. 12" for lamp leaves you just under three feet for plant material and distance for non-burnage.

Top early, and flip around 12"-16" (strain dependent, obviously)?

Run as a true SOG and flip just before you get developed side branching?

One thing about flowering while the plant is so young will relate to root mass/penetration to media relative to the wicking saturation point. This can be managed to a degree with the air gap, and to a degree with the size of the upper media container...

Do you have your venting issues addressed... will it fit within the space?

I was looking into using vertical 600's found a lot of 93 for sale in bulk price, and cheap is the language for me restarting. and I like the hang-the-light-mid-plant and cube it make it all lop side heavy and I was planning on rotating them through flower as theres 7 different genes so all finishing the same time is VERY unlikely, Im allowed 6 in flower and was looking at maximizing that and maybe growing for someone elses good too, just to do it. and its gonna be kinda hard to get the back corners cause its 4' deep when looking into the closet, I can also buy/build a grow tent if need be but was planning on a 3'X3' for Veg and run a stinkbud cloner(cause Im familiar with it) and donate/sell the other clones I cant keep and it just uses CFLs.

I never fully figured out the SOG (how to make huge colas on each plant) and Im ok with DF'ng and LST (to the extreme) The house I lost in OK had 2 gallon buckets and had 5' trees in it that were starting to resemble D9's but not on that level yet... media will be like last time CoCo, and wick it with Jack's and Calc Nit (simple and boring farm life is for me)

the horizontals I keep finding and for that area I was thinking about cool tube setups but was thinking the vertical cool tube with little cfl corner lights, Im OCD and never sleep much so building drives me insane as I will just keep adding ...

and Thanks for the insight on it but a SOG with 6 even 16 plants wouldnt yield me enough I dont think, I make edibles and will run through a pound in a week of cooking up stuff and now I'm starting the THC soda adventure and more suckers/candy ...

and venting issues was an issue Ive thought of but dunno much was going with a 6" 430CFM fan and filter setup I found... dont wanna go off the deepend just yet... starting to get the pissed off wife like you guys lol

but I usually flip at 30" or more after lots of training and DFn

why the advice on horizontal bulbs? and I'm almost sure I'll 2gal on top of a 3.5 gal or I'll 3.5gal inside a 5 gal to save headroom... and Im lookin for that drafting prog I saw in this thread when I reskimmed it lastnight forgot the name though...

And I hope D9 is doing OK...
