The stretch is over...at last. Had to bend only 4 branches this week.
Day 28...................................Day 35

The buds are puffing up nicely;

Should I be worried about the red leaf stems? You can see them clearly in the closeups. I see them everywhere although she is still growing well.

My bug problems seem to be gone though...sacrificing a chicken seems to have helped.:)

very nice! looks really healthy but just a little bit of tip burn, which is usually, but not always, indicative of over ferting. when i started defoliating in flower i had to drop to ec 1.2 because of similar symptoms. no loss in yield, though.

i have red leaf stems all the time. it's a repeatable trait with some strains. doesn't always mean a nute problem.

have you been checking tds and ph?

gone for a week...last bash o' the summer. I didnt have time to flush before we left. I put my faith in the PPKs, over filled its rez, made sure the bulk rez was full then left on our trip. I was kinda worried about what I would find on our return but am developing confidence in what has to be the simplest system there is, so...

Day 35............................ .......Day 43

She is still growing fine and putting out lots of new whatchamacallit hairs. And I'm starting to see some trichs finally;

This is the worst of the tip burn. I wonder why its not evenly spread throughout the plant.

have you been checking tds and ph?
No I have got a little complacent and lazy. I'm going to try a 25% strength solution @ 5.9ish Ph flush.

5 weeks left,

Hi cheese,

I started seeing buds at about 3 weeks:

She is my first sativa so I dont quite know what to expect.

I got a good chunk of private time this morning and was able to check my various TDS readings.

I cant check Ph because my cheapo Milwaukee ph600 died.

Anyway, PPK was 1.8 EC and has lots of those springtails on the surface. When I removed the cover a large group of them went nuts. I was tempted to spray inside the rez with Raid but didnt.

The bulk rez was about 1.7 EC.

I top fed/flushed with 3 liters of 25% solution and we'll see if that stops the tip burn.

Any suggestions on what new Ph meter to buy?

Thanks,
OO

Day 43............................ .......Day 49

4 weeks to go.

buds getting bigger;

I'm starting to smell a light fruity aroma.

Is this a problem? or just age? The tip burn problem is at least slowed down if not stopped. Its hard to tell.

In the left pic is one leaf in the middle. In the right pic in the background low down you can see more. According to this post in the sick plants thread it looks like a manganese def. caused by low Ph.

I have got a new Oakton PH pen and got these results (all checked twice); PPK rez 6.3, bulk rez 4.5. I also got 1.8 EC in both. The surface of the ppk rez appeared scummy with 100's of springtails flopping around.

What do you folks think?

OO,

Flowers look like they're developing, so it can't be too bad, right?

Following your link, it does look like it could be a manganese issue...

Did you notice knna's post in D9's thread regarding burning of tips?

To summarize it:
1. Nute-related leaf burn is caused by a lack of water in the leaves.
2. The amount of water moving through the system is the result of a balancing act between capillary action, the hydraulic pressure (upward pull) resulting from transpiration, and the resistance of the osmotic pressure in the root zone.
2.A.a The lower the humidity, the greater potential for transpiration.
2.A.b The larger the surface area of the canopy, the greater the potential for transpiration.
2.B Osmotic pressure describes the characteristics of solutions seeking equilibrium: Where ever the the concentration of nutes is higher, water is drawn to that side. When we are running a highly concentrated nutrient supply, there tend to be a more concentrated nutrient supply on the outside of the roots, and this results in a force that resists water flow up through the plant.

It looks like your beauty has a relatively small canopy. So the nute concentration, while modest in comparision to concentrations being run by other growers, might be exceeding the hydraulic draw of transpiration. To test this theory, try topping off the bulk res with pH'd RO, and give it a few days watching new growth to see if this takes care of the tip burn.

Or, drop your RH to increase the pull of transpiration.

Or do both.

Or leave her alone, 'cause she looks pretty damn good to me.

Oh... my bulk res is running down in the lower fours, and the PPK res runs around 6.2 too... Don't know if its a good thing or a bad thing... but it seems to be how I've hit a balance.

Oh yeah I've been trying to follow it but its way over my head...great summary thanks.

Or leave her alone, 'cause she looks pretty damn good to me.
Thats what I needed to hear.

Good to see your ppk runs the same Ph as mine does.

I will make one change for run 3 though; get Canna specific RO nutes and be done with it.

Thanks,

Hey IF nice find.

I use the generic clear (well it was) 1/4" vinyl tubing from HD so I think I'm OK. Jeeze it makes you wonder though...what in this world is safe?

Thanks,

I just changed out the hose, and dumped all my reservoirs. I'm curious to see if the internal res will stabalize in the low sixes... I'll let you know over the next few days.

hey, people!

just lower your ec to 1.2-1.5 for a while and see if it helps.

other than the tips your plant looks pretty good.

the ph is a little high and that could be causing some of it. i don't think you have an actual deficiency.

the springtails are a pain in the ass but are not really dangerous. since i've sealed all containers i don't get them in the reservoirs anymore. they like wet, algae covered areas and plant debris. an open reservoir is an invitation. they are probably the most numerous insect in your yard. outnumbering even ants. the thing is to control the environment in order to deny them habitat.

you guys really should try jack's in these things. i just now went out and checked my veg system real fast and the volume tank was 5.4 and both the pump bucket and the lead plant were 5.7. it stays like that all the time. jack's, calcium nitrate, and ro water.

That would be nice D9 but a 25lb bag would feed my tiny garden for 100 years. I'll be amazed to be around in 10. Not sure if I can get it the Great White North but I will check it out.

Should I still be adding .4 EC of calmag?

What do you think IF want to split a bag?

I need to get on the Jack's program. I'm deep enough into my current jugs that they can get fed to the lawn. There's no local distribution of it here. But that's a pretty weak excuse.

Thanks D9 I knew I could get it shipped but I have a few issues. One is that my nutes now are liquid and measure in ml. Jacks is powder and how little do I need for 15 liters? I dont know how to measure powder accurately.

The other thing is I will have to have it shipped to my house and I dont do that with anything that has "hydroponic" on the bill of lading.

I'd like to use it but I can go to a local store and buy RO canna nutes with anonymous cash.

hey OO, when ups delivers up there do you hear the sled dogs coming before you see them?
Nah, not at this time of year...they just toss it off the canoe as they float by:)

Thanks for a good afternoon chuckle,
OO
