had quite a few jeeps over the years (84 cj7, 53 willys wagon, 94 yj) but currently have a 2009 jk unlimited rubicon. just lifted her this past weekend and threw on some new rims and rubber.
ive been building jeeps and racing for the past 10 years .. i have my own shop and also been all around the world building jeeps . here are some of the recent ones ive built
apart from not the greatest mileage, keep an eye out for the 0331 head. Its on the newer 98+ models I believe and had a tendency to crack/warp. my 91 is a HO 4.0 with 220k and runs flawlessly. you really cant go wrong with the 4.0 in any model. nearly bulletproof... avoid the 84-90 models too. renix sucks.
check for exhaust leaks, just about every xj will get cracks on the exhaust manifold where the two pipes merge . I switched mine out with one form a junkyard zj that allows for a little more flex. always check 4wd, even if you can feel it engage there may not be a front drive shaft so stick your head underneath and make sure(happened to a friend of mine recently...only reason i mention it)
^^ALL GOOD ADVICE ..DEF GET A 98+ CHEROKEE U WANT THE 29 SPLINE AXLES WITH 8.25 AND ALSO THE HEAD IS BETTER THE OLDER ONES HAVE COOLING ISSUES . ALSO CHECK ALL THE POWER WINDOWS THEY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SWITCHES .. CHECK UNIBODY FOR RUST UNDER (DEPENDING ON WHERE U LIVE) I GOT A 99 FOR SALE IF UR IN SOCAL
yeah avoid the D35 rear if you can. the chryco 8.25 is a much better axle. hell look around, you can even find a D44 to swap in to a newer rig from an 86/87 with tow package, I've got one and eets a verrah nice specially' with discs from a crown vic.. grab the front 30 (non-disco if possible?) for bolt in 4.10's too. Lots of easy quick junkyard upgrades available.
I could go on for days about the cool, cheep shit you can do with an XJ.
I had a 89 xj cherokee i got it for free from the family and got it running with a fuel pump and it ran great with the 4.0 inline 6 with auto tranny. Only problem it had was overheating i switched the cooling system over to the 92+ style with a brand new 3 core radiator, put the auxilary fans on a toggle switch inside. Never had a over heating problem again, its a common swap the older style overheats.
Thougjt I would bring this thread back to life.....i made my 05 unlimited wrangler my daily driver. How can I make it more fuel efficient for city driving?
but really we dont drive our jeeps for mpg...we drive em' because they're capable of 10x more than any other vehicle on or off the road....no real advice other than re-gearing if you have oversized tires MAY help
anyone catch one car too far last night? that show is gonna sell a ton of heeps
Lol I hear that bro, I wish I could send the wife to work on a bike.....dont think she would have it. Would a new exhaust, header, an a intake give me a couple more miles to the gallon?
