Off the shelf retail store screw-in LED and CFL bulb comparisons

perhaps the smaller diodes have something else to consider; the edges (lets say where light shines horizontal) are coated differently with phosphor and seem to emit a more redish light, this MIGHT be beneficial to our 'spectumlimited' white bulbs
since more smaller diodes have a larger outside surface compared to single diode lights

but if i compare them 1 by 1 vertically, it seems the single gives out a slighty higher intensity, leading me to think that smaller have more advantages when placed closer to the plants

Less diodes per watt should give greater penetration/light distance.
More diodes at the same wattage would cover a larger area but not have as much depth.

In a micro environment It probably doesn't make much difference.

The 10w bulbs blynx uses run at 0.4 w each diode.
The phillips 8.5 run at 0.7w each diode.

Theoretically the phillips bulb should work better.

I have noticed the smaller bulbs tend to get hotter. The 8.5 watt bulbs are much hotter than my 14.5 watters. The eco-smart bulbs seem to get the hottest.
Based on build alone... the walmart bulbs seem to be the highest quality which i find funny since they're shitty walmart bulbs lol.

I don't really have the facilities to do a side by side.

im thinking it does makes a difference, if you can lower your lights 1cm, that could be a 20% intensity gain, if your overal patern/coverage is good enough this would be a win win win, this would increase your "penetration" as the light can hit plants on a better angle

ill be modding my setup some more for betting cooling, as this can give another 25% increase in lumen, will check back end of the year :D

That's real good, is that a dish tub, how big is it I wonder.

It is a Rubbermaid tub.

Dimensions are approx 13.5" L x 9.25" W x 6.25" H.

I've always guessed it's around 2.5-3gal of soil.

I had a 3gal container that still had the soil from a girl that recently came down so I decided to see how much would fit in the tub.

Looks like the tub holds 3 gals of soil (including root ball).

Thanks for that info, I was thinking around two gallons.

Real nice stuff you got going on here.

Really great thread. Perhaps it's buried in the thread, but how many grows are you guys getting with the same bulbs?

I don't think anyone growing with screw in bulbs is likely to have replaced them yet, I'd anticipate getting 2-3 years out of them. Loads of them have longer warranties than that now!

i made this for my 2.5'x2.5' box. there's an hps in the middle but you get the idea. i got most of the sockets online for less than a buck each. the rest at home depot for $1.25. the bublbs i source from wherevers cheapest. roughly 1.50-$2 each. not paying more than $2 for a fucking light bulb. i aim for minimum 800lumens(750) rating on the box cuz i know i can get at least 2x that when i take the domes off. i don't count on penetration more than 4-6" being any useful so i aim for total coverage vs intensity. object is to get enough light to cover the whole area at 4-6 inches above tops.

If you actively cool one of these sumbitches that would extend the life a lot.

Man they are getting way better, these a19 bulbs.

It's the floods I am interested in now.
