Have moved into the new digs. Totally off the grid. Solar, water tanks the whole nine yards. Let the fun begin.

just a matter of time until someone develops a roofing shingle that will also act as a solar panel, without being so fragile that hail will damage it. I have seen light transfer set-ups that roof mount on your house, & optic fibers run through a small hole in your roof to light the room below. with that, good insulation, and the willingness to heat & cook with a woodstove, you would be right on the edge of independence...

That's already here.

Can they withstand the weather?

Just like ordinary shingles, solar shingles are designed to withstand rain, wind, and hail. However, because they’re new to the market, there isn’t a lot of real-life data on how long solar shingles can last

They are lace monitor lizards. I thought the 4 footer that visits my yard was cool until recently when I had a moment and wondered why the tree had eyes. Upon closer inspection (not to close) it was a lizard attached to the tree looking me in the eye. He must have been a 7 footer as his tail was touching the ground.
Then there's the kangaroos and wombats that visit during the night.
Its early days but things are coming together.
