Wow, that's some beautiful scenery, Buzz. Didnt know edison was loaded, but i guess he founded the company that later became GE? So do the Ford and Edison families still own those properties? How often are they occupied, only in the winter?

The Mangoes Opens to the Public​

Ford’s winter home was sold to a private family in 1947. In 1988, The Mangoes was sold to the City of Fort Myers, and after two years of restoration, formally opened to the public in 1990.

Both properties are now owned by the City of Fort Myers. I was there when the Ford Home was sold. We did a lot of demolition and restoration on the house. The sidewalks were poured by hand wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow full to protect the garden grounds from damage. The interior design was done by the same designer who did Mar A Lago. It was an interesting project to say the least. I had a great job.


SW Florida is tropical in climate and it is beautiful. Summers are brutally hot and humid. It is also very densely populated by what Dad used to call 'damn yankees'. He said he didn't mind yankees because they went back home. Damned yankees came on vacation and decided to stay. I'm pretty sure he was joking.

Ft myers sounded like a rough place 100yrs ago, it's been built up so much since then. That was the time to buy land in florida, 80-100 yrs ago. How much u think the edison and ford estates are worth, Buzz, if they were to be sold to some billionaire? Are they like 5-10 acres each? That much oceanfront property u think it would be 100M or something crazy like that, a developer would want to break that up and make 10 mansions or something.

I laid a small bet on FSU -14.5, early on they looked like they were going to cover but give the Canes credit, they were competitive all game. Those ACC refs are something, huh Buzz?

FSU has a 'bye' next week vs North Alabama before taking on Florida, who gave up 600yds to LSU's QB and will be 5-6 after they lose next week to Missouri. Then the ACC championship and most likely the college football playoff for the seminoles.

I think venice attracts a lot of counterculture 'weirdos', Hawk, the healer looks like she's got $ tho, maybe she escorts on the side cause u know yoga aint paying the bills.

Hawk's right, u got a good phone DB but looking into it i think android is just stupid with learning different spelling of names. How much u think the edison and ford estates are worth, Buzz, if they were to be sold to some billionaire? Are they like 5-10 acres each? That much oceanfront property u think it would be 100M or something crazy like that, a developer would want to break that up and make 10 mansions or something.

The homes are not oceanfront. They are sited along the Caloosahatchee River which is a tidal river. That area of Fort Myers is a high rent district. Edison Home, Gardens and Laboratory are about 14 acres total and Ford Home around 6 acres. I have no doubt the properties would sell in the millions. The homes are on the National Register of Historic Places so there won't be any developers.

The ACC video review team were horrible. No other way to say it. The announcers tried to get the review booth to comment but there was radio silence. Miami is usually a close game, and it does not matter what each team's record happens to be at game time. I was sweating this game because a 1 loss FSU team is not going to make the playoff because of the strength of schedule. N. Alabama will get a good paycheck and some wounded Seminoles will be able to recover before heading to the Swamp.

Dolphins have a Bye so the Jags 49er game is on tap this afternoon.

There's a fish fry we have been invited to attend first.

Aaannnnnd Jimbo Fisher has been fired from TA&M. It's kind of karma that the year FSU looks primed for a CFP berth that jimbo gets fired from the job that he left them for. Unfortunately, he'll still get paid 76M over the next 8 yrs AND there's no set aside if he gets another coaching job. If he gets hired by another school he'll still get his full salary from A&M. Well, just because they've got money doesn't mean they're not stupid.

Ah, ok, so if they're historical sites then no development. Are they like open for public tours and such? Or do people live there?

The homes are open to the public. Guided tours used to be the only way to see the Edison Home. I think it's all self guided now. No one lives in the homes. When I worked there, a housekeeper lived in what is known as the Honeymoon Cottage. She took care of cleaning the houses and she was on site for emergencies and fire alarms.

One night a fire alarm went off in the Guest House and every piece of fire equipment was parked along the road in front of the house. It was a false alarm from a triggered sensor in the attic. Raccoons had set up a household in the attic and they were peeing on stuff. Something shorted out and triggered the alarm. A few days later we trapped a giant raccoon that was turned into Boudin by one of my Cajun groundskeepers.

I like fish. I used to eat a lot of fish. I don't fish much at all these days. The fish fry was excellent. The grouper was the best. Hush puppies, onion rings, baked beans, coleslaw, potato casserole, cheese grits...and more made me lose my appetite.

Mostly chicken these days.

That would be cool to tour these old estates. Not sure about the self-guided tours, there better be cameras all around, i could see some jokers try to vandalize stuff if no one's looking.

Ah man, i once helped remodel a house that had an attic that was a home for raccoons, so much raccoon shit and piss you could barely breathe up there until we cleaned it out. Had to wear hazmat to clean it out, you'd come out of there with all this brown dust (raccoon shit) all over ur arms. And it didnt help this was during the summer in an un-airconditioned house where it was 120F in a dark attic. You could work 5 minutes in there before ur goggle became so steamy you couldnt see.
Ive heard of people eating raccoon, i guess it's not much different than possum or squirrel or rabbit. Like a chewy dark meat chicken, more gamey, less fatty.

So ur fishing days are behind u? I figure as you get older it's one of the few things you can still do well. But maybe ur type of fishing is more athletic, sport fishing in the ocean, surf fishing etc. Ur not exactly sitting beside ur rod with a beer, hat pulled low and napping.
All those sides sounded great, a midwest fish fry wouldn't have hush puppies or cheese grits so gotta love fish fries in the deep south. Do u consider ur area 'southern' or no? Florida is kind of its own thing, northern florida is 'southern' but southern florida is more boujee. But im probably wrong, florida attracts people from all over, kind of like california in that way.

Jimbo is known for having a complicated pro style offense so it's not impossible he would be hired as an OC in the NFL. Doubt even mark davis would hire him as a HC tho. A G5 program (MAC, Sun Belt, etc) might hire him as HC, he can still recruit well and at a smaller school with less pressure he might rehab his reputation. But yeah, he might get one more chance to prove he's still a capable HC before he goes the way of butch jones, bobby petrino, malzahn, etc.

Did u watch the pats-colts game? U think belichick is done with Wack Jones for good? Too bad their only other QBs are zappe and grier, it's like a poopoo platter of QBs that the patriots have available. To go from the GOAT to this at QB is just such a downfall. I went on MGM bets website and I put a dollar down on the broncos winning with the score being under 47 combined. The payout is $7. I don't know what's been going on with the Patriots it's been horrible this year it's been absolutely horrible

Mac jones had that final go game winning TD drive vs the bills 3 wks ago, which cost me a few parlays, but the 3 games since have all been losses and he's looking more like Wack Jones than mac jones. On the plus side, patriots are now #4 in draft order behind the bears, giants and cardinals, so u can look foward to a new QB this year hopefully. There's always a bright side to tanking, i know from experience, as a patriots fan that was unknown to u the last 20 years.

I won a couple bucks on my anytime TDs for kincaid and javonte, would have won more if stephon diggs scored but josh allen was more interested in throwing the ball to the other team. Last drive they had diggs barely moved once the ball was snapped since they were all runs.
Any bills fans here? I think they want their head coach, sean mcdermott, fired asap. Theyre 5-5 now, #10 in the conference, 3 places out of a playoff spot. To get to the surf from home is 2 hours one way. It is 2 hours to get back home. That is half a day. Hauling fishing gear to the beach, throwing a cast net to catch bait, wading through the surf to cast, wading back to shore adds up. I have found that I get half as much done and I take twice as long to get it done. I used to play golf. My old back does not approve of the sport. I spend most of my time these days keeping up with our 6 acres of N. Florida.

I am definitely living in the Deep South part of Florida. You are right about S. Florida being much different. Much larger population and many more retirees from northern states. I grew up in S. Florida but I chose to live far away and I like it.

The Edison Homes have very wide porches and visitors view the inside of the homes through gates across the door openings. There are still guided tours offered, and there is a special tour for small groups that allows entrance to the interior rooms. That is a new feature.

Seems like u had to trade proximity to water for more land. I'd say that's a good trade off. 6 acres is a huge piece of property. Can probably grow all ur own food, raise chickens and stuff. With that amount of land if you move some earth you can probably have a big pond that you can stock with fish if u want to.
Ok, you cant actually go inside with the self-guided tours, that actually makes sense. I havent been to Florida in like 20 yrs, and that was around tallahassee, so if i ever make it to south florida id like to see those homes.
I couldnt imagine working in an attic in that florida heat, it rarely gets super hot and humid around here, maybe a few days a year but mostly it tops out at 90F or so. I know Hawk used to do roofing and that seems like it could super hot during the summer. Just have to make sure you're well hydrated and maybe cover yourself from the sun like they do in the middle east.
