I'm not sure when the first game is but training camps open in about 6 weeks, I think i heard somewhere...

Off topic but congrats to the city by the B... I mean city by Lake Erie, for their first professional sports championship since Jim Brown was the Lebron James of his respective league...
Maybe this means that the Browns will have a good year? RG3 makes a comeback and they go 12-4?
Nah, Pittsburgh's defense is good again, they'll break him in two if he tries to run on them.

Von Miller turning down a contract where he makes nearly 40M in the first 2 years and nearly 58M in guaranteed money (well, 'potential' guarantees, which confuses me: is it guaranteed or not?!?) overall... I thought that was pretty arrogant of him. That's QB money right there.
But then you look at the deals Olivier Vernon and Fletcher Cox got with the giants and eagles and they have more guaranteed dollars, and they didn't destroy defenses for a month straight in the playoffs. Neither made the playoffs, but still.
So yeah, i guess i can see the logic in not taking less $ than lesser players.
I still like him, if only he looks like a nerd with his glasses and bowtie. A big musclebound nerd, true, but still a nerd. And he even dances like a nerd. Check him out in the Madden 15 commercial with kevin hart, the first time i didnt find hart annoying and started liking him. It's about the 1:20 mark of this vid:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DL0W9AUCuY

I wonder if he ever celebrated a sack with that dance, but couldnt find it online.

It would be a good year if da bayrsh (spoken in a thick chicago accent, a la the ditka superfans on Saturday Night Live) went 8-8. Part of me wants them to do worse, and get a higher draft pick. We need a qb of the future. Hoyer's a good backup, but i think he is what he is at 30. Then again, ryan fitzpatrick had a career year at 33... Whatev, they still need a franchise qb.
If the defense makes strides in its second yr under fangio, and Leonard Floyd becomes the black brian urlacher, well then yeah, that's promising.
Still would need a qb though.

It's always interesting to see what chip kelly does in the league. The media seems to like him and writes a lot about him. He's certainly got his own way of doing things, and i think there's at least a 50% chance Kaepernick has a big season this year. Maybe a 2015 Cam season would be too much, but if i could see him getting 80% of those numbers.

i know we are talking football here but how about them cavs?!?
not really a fan of the round ball, but i love sports and let me tell you bron' put on a show!!

yeah this whole von miller thing is turning out to be one real shitshow.
i think the dif here in the guaranteed v potential guaranteed money is that part of the money is only guaranteed after the 2018 season

http://www.milehighreport.com/2016/...r-to-this-work-for-von-miller-and-the-broncos
so not a real guaranteed deal at all like the others and if something happens before then he would be out of luck

on twitter he said he would rather sit out this season than play under the franchise tag
(grossly undervalued contract plus if he plays as a "franchise" player this year, tehy can pull the same crap on him next year with the franchise tag)

i seriously doubts he sits, but unless they pay him what hes worth he is kind of screwing himself

von deserves to get paid- no von, no SB50 win imho. pay that man.

here are cam newton & colin kaepernicks stats after week 8 last season...this was the week kaep was "benched"
picture.php

notice that newton only has 7 games though...so his numbers are one less game than kaep.

it seemss as though both teams defensive stats are more relevant to thier W-L colulmn than qb play imho.

Colin has skills reminiscent of Cam, for sure, including the average short to medium range accuracy but an above average long range accuracy. I think Kaepernick is quicker and faster than Newton, just by virtue of being smaller than Newton; then again, didnt newton get most of his stats while running the read option?
At 6'5" and over 250lbs, he can be a running threat every play, but smaller guys like Colin and RG3 may not survive a 16 game season, taking every offensive snap, if they run the read option the majority of the time.
But if they can open up passing lanes by scrambling, or running while looking to throw, they can still be effective qb's without exposing themselves to too much injury risk.

That's something that Colin has always struggled with, moving while looking to throw. His accuracy takes a nosedive in those situations. It's something he works at, just like he works at everything since he's a pro, and if he can find that right balance with knowing when to run and when to throw, he can be special again.
To tell the truth, i havent seen much of kelly's offense at the eagles or with oregon, and havent seen much of oregon's offense since he left (which is basically the same, since the promoted the OC to replace him). But yeah, it's basically a spread offense and read option, which is all the rage in college, but kelly's offense spreads the defense out to create running lanes. It worked pretty well with lesean mccory, who led the league in rushing in kelly's first year, but i think he led the league in rushing under andy reid before they fired him so it's not like kelly made shady into a good player.
But if the is blocking and the offense is working, kaepernick can certainly get running yards in big chunks, 20+ yards at a time. You might see him lead the league in 70+ yard runs.
He'll probably be a nice sleeper pick in 2QB fantasy leagues, and if he becomes a top 12 qb in a standard league, you've got real good return on a player who should be drafted in the 10th-12th rds at least, and if you've made a good pick on your first 1st qb (the one you drafted in the 1st-4th rds) then youve got 2 starting caliber qbs and one can be trade bait and maybe get you a top five WR or RB.

I know Von is trying not to send a bad example by accepting less than what he's worth, but what's wrong with a 'hometown' discount?

Cmon Subrob, you can be more specific than just 'Raiders'.
You can say: Las Vegas Raiders. Or Los Angeles Raiders.
Or you can even say: Connor Cook, starting QB of the Raiders, Week 8. Lol.
But seriously, they're in good position to make some noise in the AFC west this year. With the QB position uncertain in Denver, the Chargers having weaknesses in multiple areas of their team, I could see them challenging for a divisional crown. KC though, they're a pretty solid team in all 3 phases of the game, so that will be a tough matchup for them...

Well, no one's commenting on the NFL lately, mostly because there really hasn't been much to report. But one thing that's making the rounds among the league's players are the contracts being signed by their NBA brethren. With the NBA salary cap jumping up by a huge amount this year, you're seeing marginal/average players getting just ridonkculous deals (that's a real word, looked it up and everything).

Bet a lot of nfl players wish they'd been just a bit better at basketball than football right now, but then again, there's way more jobs in football than basketball (nfl rosters being 4x as big as nba rosters).

Well, Luck got the richest contract so far in NFL history, and rightfully so. 140M over 6 yrs (average 23.3M a year, still less than what kevin durant is getting, but still) with 87M guaranteed.
So yeah, the next big thing at QB gets the next big contract at QB, no surprise there.
Luck's smart enough and unselfish enough where you can bet he'll renegotiate those numbers as needed in order to sign or keep important players.

Again off topic, but durant signs with the warriors and doesnt get nearly the backlash that lebron got when he formed his superteam in miami. Maybe everyone just hates cleveland? Sorry, browns fans...

speaking of the browns I have a story to tell. the company I used to work for years ago had some of us go to a seminar and guess who was our motivational speaker? Bernie kosar! they man looks like shit and sounded hammered haha the speech he had was something out of a self help book but he added his own flare to it. he told us how he lost nearly everything due to bad real estate decisions and so forth. when I caught up with him in the hotel bar he was much more talkative lol

Poor Bernie. I knew he had fallen on hard times after his playing career ended, losing most of his savings in real estate ventures that failed after the real estate market crashed in '08, then got fired from his job as Browns color commentator in 2013 because he was ripping the St Louis Rams qb (Kellen Clemens), receivers and their receivers coach during the 4th qtr of a preseason game(!). Which, if that's a crime, half of america's football fans and 3/4 of rams fans would be guilty of the same crime. Kellen Clemens? Please. Career backup and always will be. Ray Sherman, who was the rams receivers coach at the time? Gimme a break. Packers fans can tell you about Sherman. He's just another coach who likes to watch a lot of film, doesn't make you Tom Landry...

But Bernie appears to be some sort of drunk or self-medicating, and has admitted to suffering multiple concussions through his career, so you have to feel for the guy. He left it all out on the field, and was never the best athlete or threw the prettiest ball (his wobbly ducks looked like peyton manning's post neck injury), but he had courage and leadership on the field and gave it his all.

Just goes to show: playing for the browns can lead you to be a drunk or self-medicating, and possible lose everything you have through bad investments. Let's hope fans of the browns fare better than their players, and let us all say a little prayer (to whatever god you worship, even if it's the Force) for RG3.

Although, truthfully, I think the browns can be pretty good soon. If Hue Jackson can make Andy Dalton a league leading (fantasy pts wise) QB, imagine what he can do with someone with real talent.
They traded down this draft for a bunch more picks, and have 2 1st rd and 2 2nd picks in next year's draft. Having more tickets in the lottery that is the nfl draft is always a good thing.
If Josh Gordon can get reinstated (I blame some ohio icmagger for supplying him with the sticky icky icky) and most especially the defense can be close to league average (they were bottom 5 last year, it'd be too much to expect them to be a top 10 D this season), they could have a better season, 5-6 wins, maybe 7-9 wins if RG3 and Hue Jackson find some chemistry together. And with more and better draft picks in the near future, well, they could be right up there with the bengals and steelers and ravens as far as playoff threats.
It's a lot of if's though. But they have a black head coach and a black GM, and it'd be cool if they could have some success. In a league where 2/3 of the players are black, there's a real lack of diversity in the coaching and upper management positions of NFL teams.

Paul depodesta is the Browns gm isn't he? The same dude Jonah hill played in moneyball. Not that it matters but, if what you said is true, than his character was grossly misrepresented in the flick...I'm peri excited to see how his strategy transitions to the NFL...he's like the ultimate fantasy player lol

luck is the real deal man and is worth every penny
how many hyped first rounders (esp #1 picks) , pan out?

he is def soemthign special
he has the skill set and the work ethic to become one of the best players at his position
its fun watching great players make the jump to teh nfl, and i think in 10 yrs we are going to be looking back at luck and say i remember when he first started.

/remembers another young face who started in ind who just retired
//thinks "yeah, luck could be that good"

DePodesta was hired as chief of strategy by the Browns, but Sashi Brown is their GM; Brown is a Harvard lawyer who was the team's general counsel before becoming general manager. But methinks that DePodesta is pretty much calling the shots at the draft and even trades; i guess if he can find undervalued players in the draft/free agency, he can make the Browns a winner like he helped make the A's a winner. Even better, the NFL has a salary cap, so he has the same $ to spend as every other team, whereas the A's could never compete with the Yankees and Red Sox in team salary. Actually, they couldn't compete with about 90-95% of the league in team salary. The Browns don't make as much money as the cowboys or saints do, but their team salary is the same as everyone's, so those team $ advantages are neutralized in football...

Supposedly Luck left some $ on the table when he signed his deal; his signing bonus was less than Suh's bonus, and the overall value is a little over 23M a year, not 25M+ that people were thinking.
He went to Stanford, he's smart enough to realize even the greatest QB's need good players around them to win Super Bowls. Will that extra 3M/yr or so make that much of a difference in the team's talent? Maybe. Low drafted rookies and undrafted free agents makes salaries in the 100's of thousands, not millions, so one or two more good players could be the difference in a long playoff run.
Whether the Colts will actually use that extra cash wisely, though, is something we'll have to see to believe...
But I'm excited to see him play a whole season healthy again. The game is just better when the superstars are playing like it.

this all the way,man
backups and special teams is usually where they start out
many good players in the league started in this position and grew into stars
(richard sherman 5th round, tom brady 6th)

but like you said, its up to teh team to find these gems

lets hope luck can stay healthy

Well, the Colts used 4 out of their 8 picks in this year's draft on offensive linemen, including their 1st and 3rd rounders, so you cant say they werent willing to upgrade their protection for their most expensive investment.
iTarzan will say that some teams played dirty with Luck, hitting or jumping on him unnecessarily after the play was over. Is it true? I dont know, i didn't see those games. Were penalties called on those plays? Late hits to star players, especially qb's, cannot go unpunished. We're talking penalties and large fines, maybe even suspensions, and those cost game checks.

Muhammad Wilkerson of the Jets signed a 5 yr deal, avoiding the franchise tag this season. He gets a 15M signing bonus, about 37M in total guarantees, and an average yearly salary of 17.2M. He's 26 years old and led the team in sacks last year with 12. He's a nice piece to build a defensive front around, let's hope he stays injury free (broke his leg in last game of last year, but he recovered and is ready to go) and most importantly motivated to get better and better (also so he can get another big contract in 5 yrs).

Tom Brady is dropping his appeal of his 4 game suspension. So, the Jimmy Garoppolo era begins... If he starts the season on fire, does Brady get his job back?

Von Miller finally got his deal, a 6 yr contract worth 114M with 70M in guaranteed $, putting him behind only Luck in terms of guaranteed money (87M for Luck). Good for him. Now I guess Miller won't crop Elway out of any more group photos anymore.
Broncos better hope Paxton Lynch becomes a franchise grade QB while Miller is still in his prime if they hope to compete for another Super Bowl soon. We've all seen the Sanchize play, and I'd rather have Cutler than Sanchez. It's like picking between eating two pieces of poo: do you want the one with nuts or the one with corn? They're both disgusting...
