New extraction technique? Rosin tech?

To put this in perspective, re: my dab noobishness.

I had to send a picture and call someone to fill the rig proper.

Quartz sounds interesting and probably doesn't throw sparks like this Cantonese special. Chicken scratch fever. I bought a ceramic chess man later that day. Today. An interesting experience. Much better than said cheapass nail but I can't help but think of actual essential things I could had instead. An ol' timey paper cutter for instance.

Stoked to start sifting through this collection of hairy sativa beans I've been sitting on for three FUCKIN' years. I'm agrocited.

Bitch Tester rolled me over last night. Dab hangover. I was just going to call it Batch Tester (Batchy to close friends) but it's small enough for teenage girls and earned Bitch (Bitchy. She also has a gender. Maybe not the one she would choose but the belt will learn her about backtalk).

Made a batch from a broken branch (week 6ish) that smooshes golden and shatters (made me sad when I discovered that quality). Will the shatter effect go as it ages?

Shatter with heat press is a sign of too much heat. Well made press will always be soft. I just did pretty extensive testing with a very hot iron, and short times, and after about a month or so finally went back to my low temp press, and the extract is noticeably tastier,(softer), and stronger.

Over heating re: above 220 or overall lower? I'm going to use the front half of the press today, the one hotspot in the back is raising the overall average. My last smoosh around 3AM, done that way, came out perfect.

Picked up a decent blow scale, no point not having numbers to look at.

I've scoured around a bit, but what are you all pressing with now? Not a fan of these coffee filters. Are these tea bags really just nylon tea bags? I've rawdogged the flower but not the hash. This is the worst tech (rosin that is) for sifting information. I was stoked to sign up for FC, but to what end. I think I've processed more material than half of them and I haven't been at this a full week, not to mention less than 1/20 posts in their rosin thread are worth reading. I know I'm missing a bit by skim reading so quickly but I'm not exactly flush with time.

@Mikell. Instagram is a decent place for info. I've gotten some good info through watching certain people's posts and through direct messaging.

I've had issues getting my hmk press to fully squish a tightly packed nylon tea bag. I used about 5g at a time on 1.5" hair straightener plates. I would say that the teabags are probably more useful when using an actual press. coffee filters have not let me down with my hmk yet....one blowout-from applying pressure too quickly.

I can say i learned hardly anything by reading about it, mainly just practice, trial and error. If you feel your press could be even cooler, try turning it off when you press, or even turn it off and wait a minute or half, and press then for cooler non burning temps.

I just use reynolds parchment paper.

Has anyone squished bud and sent it in for testing, along with testing the raw flower that was used for the squish? I'd love to see those results.

Anyone got any recommendations for heated plates for a 10-12 ton press? I tried a couple people on ig but so far no answers...

Find some pictures of plates that you like. Call around to a few of your local metal shops and show them the pics and ask how much they charge to make something like that. I got my 4x5x1 plates made for $150. Those plates went on my 20 ton, something a little smaller for 10-12 ton

I have tested rosin before. Are you asking to also test the spent nug as well? To test how much is left behind? Or just the flower thc % before the squish?

What I tested was GSC. Flower tested at 28%, rosin at 64%.

That's exactly what I was wondering, the latter part of your post. What kind of a return were you getting on your squish? GSC has been my highest yield to date at 25%.

I never really weighed out anything, but I would guess I was getting 15-25%. I need improvement on my rosin presses, so that number wouldn't be GSC's full potential.

GSC is queen for concentrates. Second to none IMO.

I haven't found that with my S1 phenos, but i have one more to test. I have gotten 25% on a stardawg cross, and 27% on some bubba kush.

Thanks for the info fellas. I still haven't designed my new press plates, I keep stopping when trying to figure out the best shape and size. I don't have a 20 ton press, so I can't do a 4x4 or anything crazy like that. That's why I was asking if anyone has figured out the minimum pressure required to get a "good" result?

For example, we know that you get a "good" result with the Medisun Plates that are 2.5" round with a 1 ton press. Correct me if I have my math wrong, but that would mean:

2000lb / 4.91" (Radius = 1.25", Pi R Squared) = 400lb of force per inch?
2000lb / 4" (2" x 2" plate) = 500lb of force per inch?
Maybe I have this formula wrong for calculating pressure?

If the above is true, then that means that 400lb is the minimum required at the moment, since I can't prove any other results. With that in mind, if I had a 10 ton press, I could use a 4"x4" plate and achieve 1250lb of force per inch, correct?

The only other thing I don't know is, are we actually outputting more than 2,000lb of force on the 1 ton arbor press? We're using extension bars and hanging on that shit, basically bending the metal. I don't know how the 1 ton is measured, so I don't know if it's physically impossible to exert more than 1 ton with the 1 ton arbor press, or if that's just what you get with "normal" use?

Lastly, this is the 20ton I'm considering buying, because it can be hooked up to an air hose, but 20 tons seems like overkill.

I make like 3x4 pucks in my prepress mold which gets squished on a 4x5 platen. I do between 1-2g per square inch. I have a 10 ton and if you use to much pressure I feel the rosin just moved around and binds with the material, for max yields I slowly increase pressure overtime on about 200-220deg. I have a couple gallon bags full of this forum/ogkb 2.0 trim I'm going to press soon hopin for a nice yield. Last oz of trim I got almost 6g back

Well, I picked up my new platens last night. Just another example of how you can make you own heated platens for cheap cheap cheap. These were about $20, complete.

My buddy did a great job. First he turned the flat surfaces on his lathe and got them mirror smooth. When I bought them off ebay, they were saw cut and were (I felt) more than smooth enough for rosin pressing. But, he is totally anal so he had to smooth them off.

Then, he set up a jig in his drill press and simply drilled a hole in each platen for the cartridge heater.

I got 2 sizes. One is for about 1 gram presses (2" diameter and 1" thick) and the other is for about 3 gram presses (3" diameter and 2" thick).

The cartridge heaters are snug but still loose enough to swap them out from block to block.

I will be testing them today or tomorrow.

I bought everything on eBay. Search "Cartridge heater". They are about $5 each, direct form China. Takes about 2 weeks for shipping.

The aluminum round block was $5 for the 2 small pieces and about $15 for the 2 big ones.

Well, there you go.... heated platens for about $20.
I think you just saved me a lot of cash
