New extraction technique? Rosin tech?

Yea, my Sunset Sherbet doesn't squish well. It tests around 21%. My GSC tests at 25%+ and squishes the best out of anything. Some sativa buds tested around 15%, and the yield is better than the Sherbet. They have all been dried to the same RH. Ancient Og yields well.

the GSC i tried it was weird, i had to crank up the heat hotter than for anything else to get a good yield.

Not sure about that. I was pressing it as hard as possible, and thought maybe it was a terpene thing. Some varieties are aided by the type of terpenes in the weed to help leach the extract, pretty sure. I think some kinds there is no help from the terpenes, and it takes more pressure and heat to get the extract out?

i just pressed some herb last week that i had to bump the temps up for. seemed like nothing was happening at 220*, but at 240* shit was oozing just fine.

I was pressing at like 210-215 F, i was nevious to go higher, so maybe ill bump it up a bit, im moistening up a few buds too to compare. The stuff I did get definately paler in color than 90% of photos ive seen, maybe thats a sign I should bump up the temp, haha it just feels weird to me. I feel so strongly on a cooler room and drying below 60 degrees for prime prime bubble and sift that i cant help but feel like im concentrating an inferior version of the starting material just because of the heat aplied. Rosin definately has a place for sure, so ill soldier on. I feel like rosin will definately be the extract of future commercialization, whats yalls opinion on that?

I said that back in March. First for personal, then eventually for medical and recreational consumers larger amounts will be easily made.

For the record, I bump my press up to 290-325F when pressing flowers. I have even pressed at 500 just to see what happens. The difference is how fast you have to apply pressure, and for how long. When at 500, you have to clamp down extremely fast, and let go very quickly.

In the next month or so, I am going to graph time and temp for all the presses I do. I should be able to make a line graph that represents what is ideal. When doing this, I will also take an immediate temp reading for the bud/bubble as soon as it comes from the press. I have a feeling, the bud will come out to around 140-180. So the time and temp comes down to hot long it takes for the bud/bubble to reach 140-180. The biggest variable I will have is temps in my rosin room. Right now it's about 28, and should effect the starting temp of the material used. I was thinking I should put all material in the fridge to help control this.

i'm only pressing my own material, so that provides a sort of constant to measure against.

i'm finding these variances between strains even tho they've all been grown and processed in identical conditions and environments.

i had been pressing in my lung room for a long time so a very tightly controlled environment 70*f and 55% rh.

the rosin thread on fuck combustion has a lot more folks experimenting with rehydrating their material before pressing. probably because they have less growers there so more folks are experimenting with bags they bought. most of us icmaggers grow our own :smoke:

i've got one HMK press that is too hot. presses above 300* at its lowest setting.

in my exprience those hot presses leave a totally different product on the parchment. thin film very brittle shatter, low terpene content.

i have noticed something VERY VERY INTERESTING with the hot presses however. the violent puff of steam that happens when you release (i think sunfire called it cavitation) is the majority of your lighter terpenes escaping. however, i often get condensation from that steam on the parchment in the form of little water droplets.

THAT SHIT IS STRAIGHT TERP JUICE! if you try to reincorporate it with the rest of the rosin it will lower the viscosity of the rosin just like when tony v adds his solventless terpenes to his rosin.

also it smells insanely delish, and if you lick it it will coat your mouth in terpenes. i most recently did this with some grape ape og x fbpk and the flavor it left in my mouth was INCREDIBLE and lasted forever!

if i had extra material i'd be experimenting with producing and collecting that terpene liquid.

Def never tried licking it haha! I have put my face right up in it so the puff hits me though, but I stopped using the clamp press in favor of the Arbor Press. Much better results! The key is being able to control the speed / pressure of the press, which is near impossible on the hand clamps.

i dont' like the arbor press becasue i don't want to sit on the handle for the whole press.

usually i keep the press engaged for 30--60 seconds so having my hands free during those intervals is far more efficient for my work flow.

i'm using an a-frame shop press with a 4 ton bottle jack currently btw.

actually i do have plans for my arbor press. i need to get a die made to pre-press perfect rectangular blocks like sunfire has been doing. he can use way more material per press than i have been able to stuffing pouches or even with snakes or pucks.

I am just finishing the tumbling, i have a good amount of kief to experiment with. I need to come up with the containment for pressing whether the screen, pouch, coffee filter or tea bag holds the pressure and the least amount of rosin retained in the packet. My waffle iron press puts a lot more pressure than the hair straightener did on the packet...

Heady i noticed the terp/watery stuff awhile ago too. Mostly with fresh pressing.

I think there are a few variables. Some strains need to be pressed hotter, some need to be pressed cooler. Some will darken at the same temperature another wont. Some strains need more heat just to get a good leach. Some people's buds grown with different fertilizers are more sensitive to others in regards to heat and darkening. Seen this with the same clone, different growers. Some strains apparently give much better yield after a long cure too, haven't tested it but saw a couple reports. I believe terpenophenolic profile affects necessary extracting temperature.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the great info. HMK, you are like a legend in my circles, Your skillets inspired many people along the way.

I have yet to press any rosin, but i am waiting for a custom press to come in.

What is the best way to get from trim leaf to rosin? I was thinking a dry tumbler might be better than ice water, because the press screen will be isolating all the plant material anyway.

With a dry sift or tumbler you wouldn't have to do any drying or microplaning. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Has anyone run lab tests on rosin derived from kief in comparison to nug run grease? I would be interested to see the difference in THC output compared to terpene profile between the two. I assume that a kief pressing will produce desirable THC, but I'm skeptical of how negligable the ratio is by comparison.

ya teabags, pucks or snakes work well for trim ime.

i definitely prefer to filter my trim rosin, there are more fine contaminant pieces than with nug and they're a PITA to pick out by hand.

using tea bags kills two birds with one stone. i just reupped my t-sac supply.

so a hat press will work perfect for this process? Just gotta make sure your catching the stuff that comes out due to the angle of the press? This may be a good order idea for tax return time....

Anyone have photos or advice on how to build a good puck maker? I would ideally like to be able to make perfectly round pucks for the Medisun plates and also a maker for hair straightener sized plates. Now that I can weld, I can pretty much build anything. Suggestions beyond just using a pollen press?

I saw a video of someone using a kitchen garlic press, he wrapped the flowers in parchment and then pressed it into a puck.

Also, I was thinking this idea but make one with larger diameter http://www.wackywillysweb.com/proddetail.php?prod=HP-short23.00mm It would be much faster than a screw press
