Very clean cabinet... I like the design. The reason that your buds foxtail at the top is from light/heat stress from being too close to the hps. Excellent grow, gotta love the Necessary Plant Energy!
Hey everyone, sorry I thought this thread had pretty much died I didn't realize people were still checking it out!
I had a friend come over with his scale a few weeks ago, a couple days after I put the buds in the jar. I got about 18 grams off of one plant and about 15 grams off the other.
They are a very similar smoke, but the more sativa of the two definitely has more kick. From what I've experienced, there's no ceiling, or at least not one that I've been able to reach yet. It is definitely my favorite out of all the stuff I've smoked since I started (June 05)
Yesterday I was home by myself with nothing to do all night, and my girlfriend was at work until 11pm. It was about 4:30 and I packed a bowl. By 5:30, I had realized what I wanted to do with my life, no joke. I've never had any idea what I wanted to do with my life. I'm in college right now, but haven't had any goals for life. I want a family and a house, but beyond that I had no idea about career or anything.
I started talking to a friend from high school on AIM, and was mostly having the conversation with myself, but he was helping. I wasn't sure if the things I was thinking were serious or if they were just senseless babble coming from the bowl I smoked (which, by the way, I only got about halfway through).
I told him how strongly I felt about my ideas, and that if I could think about them over the next few days and still feel the way I did then about them, then I would seriously follow my ideas. Well I've had time to think about it, and I'm more sure about this career path than any other I've ever had.
When my friend came over (the one with the scale) we packed every bowl that I owned and smoked them all. He was very impressed, the time before he smoked it he was already really high and drunk so he couldn't really appreciate it. He smokes a lot more than I do, and has smoked a lot more than I have, so having him praise it was good to hear. He said it could probably go for $60 for an eighth around here, and you can get a normal eighth for about $35-40 and an eighth of "headies" for around $50~, so I was surprised by that. He actually told me that I shouldn't sell it, it was too good to get rid of. I wasn't planning on getting rid of it but I wasn't expecting such quality for my first grow and from bagseed even.
It definitely takes a few minutes to hit you. By the time you finish a bowl, you don't feel much. At first I was a little disappointed, but after about five minutes I had no doubts about the quality of my homegrown. Even though there was the hermie, there aren't many seeds at all, not as many as I was worried about. It's a little sad though, because there aren't any fully mature seeds either, and I have no way of getting more.
I'll probably end up getting a clone through the friend of mine, he knows a lot of people in the area, and most likely it'll be pretty high quality. Either way, whatever I end up growing next, I'll be changing my cabinet. I'll be moving into a 2'x2'x4' cabinet that I put together a while ago (for this purpose) and has just been sitting around for a while. I'm planning on having a cloning/mother/veg chamber in the bottom 1/3, and the 150w HPS and maybe a few CFLs in the top for flowering.
Thanks for checking out the grow everyone, and thanks for all the help!
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a few things. I think I might've had them hanging in the cabinet a little too long, and they're a bit overdry. I think I'm going to put a little piece of bread in each jar for a few hours tomorrow, see if that helps. I don't want to use orange or anything because I don't want to change the flavor or scent.
Also, I rearranged my room, which moved the cabinet into a less circulated corner of the room. This was about mid flower, so maybe like into the fourth or fifth week of 12/12. Temperatures were in the high 80s for the remainder of the grow for at least 5 hours of each "day". I think that is definitely the reason they're foxtailed and airy buds. I bet I would've yielded a good bit more if I kept temps right.
I have been trying to tell what it tastes like, and my girlfriend said she tasted berry and cinnamon. If you smoke enough, it definitely has a spice to it. My friend and I named it Hot Sauce that night we weighed and smoked it. If the smoke comes in contact with the lips enough, it will feel like it would if you left some hot sauce on your lips. If you know what I'm saying...
wait...did i miss it????
whats this amazing career????
SpacedCWBY - That's why I started talking to the old friend from high school, so I could have it all written down so I wouldn't forget.
Jam Master Jaco - I'm really pleased with how well it went. With the amount of time you've been here, reading up and learning, I can almost guarantee your first grow will be just as good, if not better. If you know what you're getting into and catch any problems early on, which is a lot easier to do if you've read up on the subject, you should have a good grow. The information on these forums has helped me tremendously, and I appreciate everyone that contributes to this place.
As for who knows about my grow: I definitely keep to the paranoid end of the spectrum, and so far it's been working out for me. Had a couple close calls (people finding out, unexpected visits), but managed to keep everything hidden. I just can't wait until I get my own house, that will be a huge relief.
The best looking one is on the top right, in the circle. That's a different shot, but shows the same thing. Once you know what it looks like, the rest become a lot more obvious. Didn't hurt the end result though, there's a few immature seeds, that's it.
Hey Bounty, just checked out your diary and it was most entertaining in a "local boy does good" kind of way!
You have experienced how most of us got started. Find a seed in a bag, get curious, pop that seed and then play catchup trying to build facilities quick enough for that plant - haha!
Looks like you did a great job and learned a bunch of things.
A few questions/comments:
1. What was the timer for that you need 18 on/off cycles? I hope you weren't cycling your HID light that many times in aday or something...they do not like being refired often. They like to be on and stay on. Every time you re-fire it shortens the bulb life...
2. I was gonna say high temps too causing your foxtailing and probably your hermie problem. Plants can herm from genetics or environment, and since you say your temps were high, that could be it. Maybe check out a Panasonic whisper fan or similar with carbon and junk those PC fans. You will be much happier, I think.
3. You mention Lucas and whatnot, but isn't that a hydro formula and you were in soil?
4.
just make sure that the amps the fan is rated for exceeds how much the transformer is.
Not trying to be anal but this is important for safety and you've expressed the opposite of what it should be. Get a transformer/adapter that is rated in amps greater than the total load (fans) you intend to drive. Make sure the adapter matches your fan needs (AC or DC) and that you hook up the wires correctly (polarity).
5. You might consider using opaque containers, dark or black, rather than clear as transparent containers really messes with roots that want darkness. It can affect plant growth.
Good luck and thank you for the diary, I enjoyed looking at it very much. I look forward to watching your next project unfold.
Also a shout out to Vermont, one of my fave states ever to visit. Go to the 5 spice in Burlington - yum yum!
HeadyPete - Thanks for stopping by! Now about those questions...
1. I was thinking about trying a 6:40 on/12 off light schedule, but I never did that. I wanted to get a digi timer anyways because the analog timer never was accurate enough for my liking. I liked to watch my computer clock click over to 7pm and hear the ballast start it's quiet humming.
2. Ventilation issues will definitely be sorted out in the next grow or two, the problem with this cab is lack of space. All the blowers are just too big. When I move into the other cab I have (probably 6~ months) I'll be getting a panasonic whisper fan, but for now I'm going to try to make due with my PC fans.
3. Yeah, the lucas formula was designed for hydro use, but "The Lucas Formula" is just using the right dosages of ferts. I've figured out a combo of nutes that mimics, and I think may improve on the lucas formula, I'll be using it with my next grow so we'll see if it lives up to my expectations.
4. ...oops. I am always extremely careful with electricity and wiring, I can't believe I never noticed that slip-up. I try not to exceed 70% of the amp rating of the transformer, just to be safe. I don't like the transformers being hot to the touch, makes me uncomfortable.
5. Yeah, I was going to tape up the containers but I liked to see the root growth. I know it may have been detrimental, but it really showed the progressions after transplants and lighting changes and stuff. I'll be going hydro this time around, so I will be making the containers light tight for sure.
My next project has been underway for the past week or so. New lights, new ventilation, modifications to the cabinet, new filtering system, and new plants. If all goes well, we should see some Sour Diesel IBL sprouts in a few weeks.
Well, it's definitely nothing like anything I had ever bought. It blows away everything I can remember, except for what my friend was claiming to be "Elvis", one of the local clone-only strains. The plants weren't resinous at all, but they definitely had the potency. If I had grown them with good nutes, no heat issues, and better training, I could've probably yielded twice as much.
No matter what, I had a great first grow, and once you see how easy it is it's very inspiring.
Great job bounty! Looks like you got a method down that works great for ya! Love to see people accomplish their goals of growing! Especially on their first try! Keep it up man! Can't wait to see those girls when their finished!
Bounty - you're attitude, intelligence and insight to what your plants need clearly shines through in your documented grow. Your first time grow, taking lower intensity lighting and random bagseed beans and you achieved an impressive yield based on the environment and treatment you provided for the plants. I believe you've got greater grows to look forward to - your photos speak for themselves. I look forward to more of your posts and expect that I'll learn a thing or 2 from them.
Most of all, I like your attitude about not needing obscene amounts of light to achieve the very reasonable goal of growing and harvesting enough for personal consumption, and maybe a little extra. I use a 70w hps surrounded by 6x 26w cfls (3 warm & 3 cool) for veg; 70w hps surrounded by 4x 42w warm cfls for flower; 2-4 26w cfls in my new clone/mother box. I can keep these different lighting configurations about 6" from the tops so I tie plants down to maximize light penetration. Lights in the clone/mother box are at a fixed height.
1. Thanks for the compliments guys, I appreciate it!
2. Saturday, March 11th - Three SD IBL seeds germinated and placed into solo cups.
3. Smoke Report #2 - So I busted out the jar that I haven't been using in a while, and wow. That jar is a lot stronger than the other. I took one hit out of my new glass blunt tonight on a break at work, and it was a little more than I bargained for. I took the hit at about 7pm, and it wasn't until about 10:30pm that I felt completely normal again. I'll be doing some more testing so I can get a more thorough report.
4. Modifications to the cabinet for this next run - Added carbon filter to the back to free up some space inside. Added light tight darkroom louver to the intake.
5. Modifications to be done in the next few weeks - Get the light proofing of the doors and hinges and stuff done in a permenent fashion. Order medium sized HPS and socket (instead of the mogul size) and mount a cooltube. Order and mount Hanna continuous PH/TDS/EC meter.
