MH vs HPS in bloom

I'm switching over to MH on the next round for sure!

don't expect too much I tried it out and my hps side did better but I still use it in one corner with three hps around it and the plants between the hps and mh seem too do the best even though their some of the furthest from the bulbs. I'm sure its mostly do to the mixed spectrum which seems better then either bulb alone too me even with it in just one corner.

proven over the years and proven on a daily basis HPS will kick MH in all aspects of growth rates and yield
more wattage the better period
as for resin production it all comes down to strain and thats with a period behind it ......... keep plants green as best you can don;;t stress them and they will produce
don;t fall for the yellowing ???? if they yellowed faster then obviously YOU did something wrong all plants grow differently hell my best friend is 2 years older then me yet @ 12 i dwarfed him and today i am still 40 pounds and 12" taller must be the DNA huh ???? wondering do plants have DNA ????
and like VEG said for every every 2 k of HPS throw in a MH will work great

AND Gnome as for your mh grow i sure see allot more leaf production then bud production exactly what MH grows will do

daylighting

I'll have to give it a whirl myself and decide. After looking at the spectral charts for MH, they seem to provide much more usable light in all frequencies than HPS. I'm currently using a 400W with supplemental CFLs (2700 and 6500K) and plant-specific LED bulbs, so I'm already getting a pretty good range. I just want to see how MH compares. Some of the guys on this thread have had amazing results with MH.

Also, yellowing can be a good thing. Less chlorophyll bite!

well daylighting glad to see your gonna give Mh a go,

sorry I'm late to the party, I've been chopping down the a few of the ladies this evening,
i have a few more to do but have to wait till the chlorophyll is run out...
less bite ya know.....
as the more knowledgeable growers like you already know :smoke:

but there's always a stubborn jackass or 2 in the mix.. right :jerkit:
they were the one under HPS for the last 2+ weeks and are still green after 67 days and being flushed out as the same time as the ones under Mh..... those were taken tonight.`

imho use a Mh bulb as close to a 4000K rated bulb as you can.
I use the the sylvie 4000K bt56 open bulb style and it nails it down tight-n-proper but its a large bulb, 7" in diameter me thinks?
so it won't fit into most air cooled hoods.
sylvie make a 1000w 3800K BT(bulb type)37 that's smaller.

if your running more than one bulb by all means use an hps in the mix as it's strain dependent what strain excels under which spectrum

its late
I'm baked but i want to leave a parting shot of some of
my *rock fookin hard* Mh budz

BTW
I hope you can see the budz...
so, puhlezzzzzzzzzzzzzz
excuse all the **MHleaf** in the way LOL! :D

agreed ellinho,
np, your not hatin

I don't decide solely on easy trimming as a factor for keeper status as I'm sure others don't.
taste, potency and quality of the resin are more important for me.
easy trimmers are the tail end of consideration for status for me.
but yes, if i could have the tasty potent quality and they were all easy trimmers
i would be a happy gnome fo sure.
I don't have access to cuts so Ive had to rely on searching for pheno's from seed.

these are pics of what i have from my 1st current all Mh run using a 4000K mh bulb.
and they are all from seed,
mosca's OTM X IBG and Tse Fly
many different pheno's in the bunch, some very leafy,
some much less.
2-3 i may run again.
my keepers are getting ready for their turn soon and many look like the bud above.
they were all selected during the 3 years using HPS in bloom.

looking at other hps buds, ive seen plenty of leafy and easy trims too.
i ran hps only for 3 yrs and had all kinds of leafy pheno's and easy trimmers,
just like with Mh,
so what does that lead you to conclude?
its the strain and genetics that control 90% of that aspect imho
some love to use any pic of a Mh bud that is geneticaly predisposed to being leafy
and saying...see! that's what you get using Mh.
even seed vendors will tell you this strain has a hi calyx to leaf ratio
or that strain is a low calyx to leaf ratio and haven't a clue what type of light you'll grow it under, yes?
its no secret why the can say that, because they know the genetic traits.
I mean realistically if i knew a certain bulb would produce all easy trimming cola's...see where it leads to again?
genetics of the strain and breeding.

here's another pic from vapedg13s all Mh grow, he's been doing this for 20 yrs and has a nice handpicked harem going on

@gnome: i totally agree with you ... its so much genetics ... but i havent seen any big scale grows going only mh ... its still the hps spectrum ruling the factorys, and they put out the quality too ... i mean its all documented on ic ... nonetheless the pheno hunt is much more, as is the whole plant, i agree again ...

if i learned something here its to get the mh spectrum in there, just in bigger setups... for growers with 1,2,3 lights whatever ... its just to small with all the conditions they (we) have to face to recommend going completely mh ... one guy with 1 light asked if he should change to mh in the last 2 weeks of flower ... imho thats not a good way ... it will definitely stress the plants and wont give the best results ...
growers have to understand the whole process from seed - veg - flower and consider all the circumstances. of the plant and the conditions you can supply ... including the spectrum of light ...
i ran 2 mh during veg and 1x hps 1x mh for the first 2 weeks or so ... i grew mixed genetics and wanted to control the stretch of some mostly sativa plants ... that worked but it set back my harvest a good week or two ... just an observation i made ...

and this thread is a collection of some good observations and thoughts :) ...
peace

Hey gnome so your saying you are seeing more resin production from mh then hps ? i can't wait this fall to show you some resin production from my new LEP plasma lighting run in between hps 14,000 total watts
Pretty sure Plasma-light enthusiasts will tell you that the spectral output of plasma allows your plants and your bud to reach new levels of quality and yield this grow was 1800 watts two 600's and two 300 watt LEP pro plasma's pretty sick huh

:O this will be absolutely insane ... ive followed lep from the beginning ... i mean wazzup always has some great input. and the guys with lep ... killing it in means of trichome production ... and with 14k hps mixed in ... holy shit balls ... hit me up with the link you need to document that one :tiphat:

Funny how the new Lights Interaction 315w CDM Fixtures are called "Plasma killers"

Plasma Lamp: 300W Input, 300 micromol / s output.
Daylight lamp: 350W Input, 600 micromol / s output.

wow i just realized how long its been since ive posted to this thread .. i did end up throwing the mh on half the plants .. i forgot about taking pics .. my bad .. but the plants under the mh did hold up well compared to the other half of the room. the ones under 400hps seemed to be a little denser . for some reason the ones under hm seemed to want to finish a little sooner as well

it was a nice experiment , i have changed the room around again, on the last week or so of the half HM half HPS grow one of my digital ballsts went out . i went out and bought a 600 watt hps .. i have a small run in now under the 600 .

I have an experiment going on in my hid room I hope everyone finds interesting, it is technically MH vs HPS but with a bit of a twist. I have a 1000 watt 4200k MH bulb dimmed with a quantum ballast to 75% supplemented with two custom all red ufo leds (30 3watt>660nm and 15 3watt>630nm , actual wattage is 65watts draw per ufo) Vs a 1000 watt HPS. As of now the mh side is a total of 880 watts (750MH + 130 red leds) and is completely keeping up with the full 1000 watt HPS side. Now don't get me wrong it isnt exactly separated by a wall or anything so some cross lighting is def going on, and the mh is in a OG vertical hood and the hps is in a Blockbuster 6 hood so penetration is a bit better on the OG hood vs the blockbuster but with that said the blockbuster has a better spread . At any rate, soon I will have 2 more led ufos that will be white and blue leds (30 3watt> 6500k and 15 3 watt>450nm) to add to the HPS side that will be dimmed to 75% to make it a more even comparison. All in all I want to know if plants quality and yield will do better with either MH with red supplementation or HPS with blue supplementation. Sorry for the rambling lol!:watchplant:

Great stuff!

Thanks for sharing.

I am still in the standard track, using MH for veg and HPS for flower.
