I should probably do that!
Not many outdoor growers in my area. It's not that kind of place.
I've heard of some, but they keep as low key as possible.
This is a full on 'war on drugs' kind of place, near fascist state in this regard.
Some of the Mexican and Florida grows will be pretty similar, and Hawaii may also be similar too.
Thanks for the tip!

I enjoy following your growing adventures 😊
:plant grow:

My first time transplanting from fabric pot when plant hadn't development a full root ball yet:
I filled the bottom of the new pot with soil (so when small pot was set in big pot top edges of the pots had about same level).

Then I cut the small pot along the seam joining bottom to sides. Almost all the way around, just left one bit connecting the bottom to side.

Another cut up the side to top, but also leaving two small bits of fabric still holding the circle together.

Then one hand holding bottom of pot closed/up I set the small pot into the new pot. Next I cut the bit on the side still connecting the circle.

Then I carefully lifted the plant a lil by the stem and started to pull the cut fabric up and out.

Took some wriggling, sweating and cussing to pull bottom fabric, but it worked
And plants were ok
😅

Legalization in the US and Canada in particular are causing the younger generation to have much different views on our favorite herb than in the past. This makes old conservative law makers and law enforcement very worried. So some are getting even more uptight about their fascist laws. But the kids are alright. It'll take time, but this new generation here has other ideas.

Thank you for the detailed solution!
I always have my trusty Victorinox Swiss Army Knife with me when I visit the garden anyway.
Losing a couple of small cloth pots is no problem.
But it means I'll have to carry in two bags with about 15L medium each, preferably not completely dry...
Won't be lifting by the stem, though, these girls are still quite small.
But it can be done!

Lost one of the two ThaiFrican regs.
Bugs or snails, not sure which.
Damn!
Moved the pot as may be due to location.
And... The one left has some action at the nodes.
Possible showing male sex or possibly undifferentiated growth.
Double damn!

Others doing okay.
Repositioned a couple of pots as I visited in afternoon and realized a couple were shade in late afternoon sun.

The last standing ThaiFrican is looking very good, and very male!
I'll leave him for a while, keep some pollen.
Also wait if possible until the females are showing quite a few pistils to make some reg seeds.
However, I don't need to baby him too much.

So... scooped out some soil from that pot and put the two small Thai Madness fems in there.
They seem okay but really aren't growing much at all.
They don't like that little coco coir seedling pot I think.
Hopefully they'll survive, and once the ThaiFrican male is out can have that big pot to themselves.

Meanwhile, I've moved the SSSTN fem upstairs to hang out with the four NHxMM regs, as better light upstairs.
Still plan to move the SSSTN into a bigger pot when I can.
No sign of any sex on any of them.
They're all looking small but healthy and happy.

Visiting the site at evening/night is good for security.
But it's a bit crazy climbing up stairs of these abandoned buildings in the dark.
And trying not to fall into that pond of water and sludge.
Brushed up against some creature on the stairs with my hand.
Was it a bird? A toad? Something else?? Who knows?!

The things we do!

Maybe some pics on Saturday.
Rain / showers coming up probably for the next few days.

Thats why I never use these pots.
Heard from different people that the plants often have difficulty getting through the seedling pot into the new soil stunting their growth...

I hear ya!
Thing is, I tried it a month or more before on some tomatoes and basil, and within a short time they obviously had their roots into the main pot, as they were shooting up nice and tall.
So I thought it would be no problem, just slow them down a little.
Apparently not!
I also thought, because haze = tall and big, that they would help keep them smaller.
But I think, in the end, the less than 12/12 light cycle, down to 11/13 already, is enough to control their size.

Next time, may try the same, but, with bigger coir pots (500+ ml) and also cut some big holes in them.
They really are much easier for my situation in some ways.
Then again, next round, probably spring, I may just sow straight into the big pots, as they are now all in place and will be easy to use again.

Live and learn.

Day 32 -- from sprouting!

11 days since last post.
Weather has cooled a bit more, cloudy, not much sun, a bit of rain last night and today.
Just checked them this evening.
The rainfall was good for them, and only the smaller SSSTN needed a little bit of help.

All the photos today are where I've taken the pots into one of the rooms of the abandoned houses.
Otherwise my torch and flash are going to be seen right across the valley to the people over there.
Or possibly someone walking outside over here.
Security first.

Building One:

1 X ThaiFrican (reg) = Outback Haze 2 clone x (Nevil Haze 23 x Kariba Male) (10-12 weeks)
In the biggest 20L pot:

As mentioned earlier, just one left after the snails.
And it is a he, showed his pollen sacks a few weeks ago.
Nice looking boy though, I must say.
So I'm keeping hold of him for now.
PXL_20231113_100354697.jpg

2 X Thai Madness (fem) = Swiss Thai Nevil 2 clone x (NH21 x MML clone Reversed) (11-14 weeks?)
Sharing the 20L pot with ThaiFrican boy.

These two little girls are still okay, but just not growing much.
As mentioned earlier, moved them out of their small pot to share the big pot with the ThaiFrican boy.
They do look a little happier in there, which is good.
They aren't showing any signs of sex yet.
So I'm not worried about pollination.
PXL_20231113_100422794.jpg

Building Two:

1 X Super Silver Sour Thai Nevil (fem) = Swiss Thai Nevil 1 clone X SSSDH OJD cut Reversed (10-12 weeks?)
In a smaller 8L pot.

She (well, two of them, but the little one is totally shaded out now, so we'll say one of them) is doing well.
Happy news, she's showing a few pistils up top!
Fem seed, so already knew she was a girl, but still good to know she's hitting puberty.
PXL_20231113_095643175.jpg

Still planning on getting her into a bigger pot.
Just that this last week things didn't quite fall in line for that to happen.

4 X Grail Project NH18 x MM pheno 1 (reg) = (NH18 x MM pheno 1) x (NH21 x MML Male) (12-16 weeks)
In a 15L pot.

All four of these grail regs are doing well still.
One has shown some pistils, so we at least have one girl!
Couldn't see anything on the other three, but it's very dark and my torch is small, so who knows?
Shouldn't be long before the others show, I feel.
PXL_20231113_095702771.jpg

If any males show, I'll have to choose between keeping them (at least for a while) for some pollen.
Or, removing them and freeing up some root space for their sisters.
Will decide when it happens.
Who knows, maybe I'll get four girls!?!

32 days / 4.5 weeks since popping out of the soil:

We have one confirmed male: ThaiFrican, showing sex quite early, at 4 weeks with 12/12 to 11/13.
We have two confirmed females: One SSSTN and one Grail NH x MM (F2*), both at at 4.5 weeks with 12/12 to 11/13.

We are just about hitting 11/13 now, with another 1/2 hr to lose by winter solstice in approx 5-6 weeks.
So the entire flowering period should be from 11/13 through 10.5/13.5 then back to 11/13.
Little chance of revegetation I think.

Once we get another one or two showing sex, hopefully soon, I'll prepare a top dressing.
Will aim to use some 3-5-5 to increase the PK a little bit.
I have another cloth pot near site that has this in it already, breaking down the pellets inside over the last couple of months, so easy to apply.

Need to read up a bit on pollen storage, and will start with Clarke's Marijuana Botany, my old favorite!
Collection is easy in this case.
I do recall just keeping the pollen (powder) and not the vegetative pollen sacks, which can rot.
Just need to keep it long enough from ThaiFrican for the ladies that show up.
Keep it dry, keep it cool, I remember to be the main keys.
Anyone with experience, please feel free to comment.

Weather these couple of days down to 20C or so and wet.
But picking back up to 24C-26C again later in the week, with a bit more sun.

That on site pond is simply a god-send.
A couple of years ago I used to have to skip across some long grasses and reeds to use a nearby irrigation pond.
But this is right on hand, super easy to use and access.
Glad I picked this spot!!

Fun, fun, fun!

Love and hugs,
~MJS

Or, just direct planting on site.
If you decide to start on sight I would suggest using a small frame covered in row cover should stay cool and prevent problems with birds and insects. Not sure about in the tropics but my big problem is Cutworms .looks like your doing alright !

Hey there @Old Piney, nice of you to drop in!

Since you quoted one of my posts from early October, I can tell you I germed at home and started them in little pots by the window inside until the broke ground. Then they went to the balcony outside, getting some morning sun, for just a couple of days, maybe 4-5 I think. Then they went into the bigger pots on site, where they are today.

In this place, surprisingly few issues with bugs and birds. Though 3 out of 4 of my reg ThaiFricans got eaten, either snails (had some damp areas nearby) or bugs, not sure which. The survivor has shown himself as a male.

Heat not an issue, I find, even for this zone. Especially seed-stock grown outside all their lives. They do fine in the summer when it's 35C-38C every day (mid 90s F to 100F or so) for a month or more. So not much need for a frame to cool them down. I leave them open, get the fresh air on them to strengthen the stems.

Thanks for your kind words.
How many of your BP and Diesels are showing sex already?
Nearly all have pre- flowers now and are all Female,,,,,
No regs just fem beans,,,,
watching them like a hawk though Maria,,,😂
totally no light leaks which took up a lot of time sorting as the window is huge,,,,
I have a gander later and expect the others to follow suit,,,,,
watering individually with some big drinkers whilst others just normal,,,,
around 10 days into bloom so very early days still,,,,
peace n regards

So my thought was if you were going to germinate and grow on site , was to use the frame to shelter the small seedlings from a insects and birds
. I see your past that stage. In the past I've used a clear plastic cold frame early on for this purpose. Clear plastic is not a good idea even in just a warm climate, the row cover just won't heat up. Your garden is looking good!

Nice.
I haven't grown any regs for quite a few years, now that I think of it.
Last time, was ... had some Mandala Safari freebies, I think it was.
One was a beautifully purple male, but after crossing with some other Safaris I didn't leave the seeds long enough to mature.
10 days bloom, I guess they're still stretching.
I love that next phase, when the calyxes pop everywhere, and those lovely young and fresh aromas start up.

Foggy day today, though weather forecast says that after Thursday there will be about 10 days of sun with a bit of cloud and temps will pick up. Perfect!

I like cold frames and used them when growing in the UK.
Just no need for them here, unless one were to sow seeds in like Dec to Feb.
Even then, the temps would be like a UK May, hahaha!!!

Already thinking about when to start the next round....
I pulled out my other beans, all generous gifts from OJD, and there are so many left!
Seven each of the reg NH x MM and also the ThaiFricans.
Two more SSSTN and four Thai Madness, plus the five Lemon n Lime Jones that I haven't touched yet.
Maybe ... see the temps / weather, about March.
Let's see, start March, show sex / preflower in April, flower through to ... July or August.
Just have to see how they flower under 13 to 13.5 hrs of light....
My avatar pic is a Thai Gold (Thai x Guerilla Gold), from LBH, that flowered through June and July.
It's worth a shot!!
