Lovely ninja adventures of Bat girl 😍

Looks funny the way the bats are all lined up along the edges.
I assume that's where they can best hock in their lil claws.

More bat pics always appreciated...
Yeah, I think that's how they the get a grip on the ceiling or wall.
If you look close, a few of them are just hanging from nowhere.

I was thinking about more bat pics, but to be honest,
I walk through there with my head down, keeping a low profile,
and try to avoid being hit if they're flying around.
Let's see if a better opportunity presents itself.

i like your approach to guerrilla growing, more like revolutionary guerrilla than just hiding a few behind brambles. Nice choice of genetics too. Plants should also learn to adapt to situations, rough conditions pushes their defenses to some extent, trichomes and terps, and they appreciate it more when getting help with food and protection. Maybe they won't look like shiny roses in posh ultra controlled environments, but who cares, they're not for decoration.

Thanks for the kind words!
The garden does have a little post-apocolyptic feel to it, abandoned buildings and all.
The genetics are courtesy of OJD -- a prize from one of his competitions.
But these kinds of plants are more like where I come from than heavy indicas and the modern popular strains.
I used to grow indoors, in the 90s, and it certainly makes for prettier buds.
But in the end, when it's burning in the bong, who cares what it looks like?!?!

Wild dogs are a bit of concern, I'd worry about those.

Maybe I should say "stray dogs".
They barked when I first appeared, probably out of surprise, because there sure aren't any other humans that go into that area.
But when I stood my ground and made a bit of noise, they quickly moved out.
Their barking was just barking, no real aggression at all.
First time I've seen them there, too.
I think they may have been sheltering from the rain.
No, wait, second time -- saw them there a long time ago when I was scoping out garden sites.
I keep safe --- but I also know very well, that if you run from a pack of dogs like this, they'll chase you more.
Then it's Maria being chased by dogs through the dark bat cave.
No, that doesn't sound like fun at all!

Bats I don't know, they seem cool enough. The ones in my area are like tiny mice and you can see them in few numbers hunting bugs at dusk. Some locals say they might carry the rabies, just to scare children, since there's a total of zero cases of people infected with bat rabies in all the years I've been here.
Best luck with them.

These are a lot lot bigger than mice!!!
40 cm wingspans at a guess.
Never heard of any bad cases of such things around here, either.
Still, will keep my distance.

You know i'm a passionate bat guano grower for many years!? Cannabis plants really like that, i use it to mix with tomatoe vegetable soil and i never have any problems, mostly water after repotting, even in flower till the end. :) Good against bacteria and for growing roots and long term fertilizer when you use it in pellet form.

Don't jinx me! I'll send my bats to your house... :p
I know it's good, just safety first, that's all.

Hi Maria,

Apologies I lost track of your thread ...

Congratulations on the successful winter grow harvest! And all the best for the upcoming summer grow!

Well I have to say I'm also a fellow winter grow enthusiast 🙂

I hope you don't mind me a pic of my SSSTN? She's approx. 6 weeks from seed in a 5L container.

Interestingly enough I first noticed pistils on this one 32 days from seed! Similar to your big(ger) SSSTN pheno.

Hey there @Nexus7 !
I noticed you were reading through the journal.
Your SSSTN is simply beautiful -- I imagine the stretch is only just starting on her, right?
It seems that one month + is the standard for them around 12/12 or so.
Are you going to pot her up later, maybe after the stretch is done?

Tell me more?! Did you start her late March? So she's been at 12/12 (give or take) since birth?
How do you run your winter grows? What latitude and light hours? When do you start and finish long sativas and hazes like the SSSTN??

Yes she's just starting to stretch now ... it was indeed a late March start here so flowering time from birth.

A pure Sativa can start to flower early March here with enough veg time and harvest time is normally June or July even.

Normally I start my winter grows after I harvest my last Sativa in May/June and harvest them around September.

I'm in the Southern hemisphere in a koppen Csa zone and use the help of a greenhouse to make it all happen.

I don't normally bother with the light hours outdoors but usually just keep a "flower calendar" where I keep track of sow, pre-flower, flower and harvest times for a particular plant or strain.

This one I plan to keep in the small pot to hopefully expedite the flowering time but definitely could do with a larger container.

Similar to me, just the other hemisphere, and I don't need a greenhouse (though it wouldn't hurt in winter here -- but, guerilla grow, isn't going to happen!)
At least you have a dry season!
All the best.

Double post, so I'll write something else...

Weather picked up a lot. Sun has been out, though with clouds, and fairly warm/hot, high 20s C up to 30C.
Humidity still fairly high, so not sure how the pots will do for watering.
More sun and cloudy up to this weekend, mid to high 20s C.
Nice!
But must get to watering and feeding them by this weekend!!

A couple of days ago I pulled the Grail x ThaiFrican crosses at Garden 2.
Was having security issues getting them to the newly prepared location, and security issues with them staying where they were.
It's a pity, but those seeds were dropped just for fun.
And I still have a couple of Grail x ThaiFrican ladies at Garden 1.
Thinking about how I want to proceed from here.
Maybe try the Thai Madness x ThaiFrican crosses instead there.
Not sure, still thinking about it, and in no rush.

Spring-Summer Grow Begins -- Maria among the Hazes!

Day 50

Haven't visited or pic updated Garden 1 for 9 days.
During that time it's been fairly warm to hot, 25C-30C.
Maybe rained once a week ago, but not much.
And last few days very low humidity (for here) around 50%!
I was thinking that they are going to be very dry, if not falling over.
And since they were hungry 9 days ago, they're not going to be very happy.

I therefore prepared not only my usual organic flowering amendments,
mostly 2-5-5 (IIRC) pellets, plus some kelp meal, a bit of fine dolomite lime, and another higher PK chicken fert powder,
but also 1 L bottle of mixed Peter's nutrients, two part hydro mix from a long time ago.
I mix the 1 L bottle about 5 x strength, and then drop that into 5-10 liters of the bucket on site topped up with water from the pool.
I dropped half the concentrated bottle, and left the other half hidden near the garden.
Gives them an instant feeding while they wait for the organics to kick in.
Rough and nasty, and not pure organic, but one does what one must in the guerilla garden.

Getting to the garden, they haven't wilted, but they are definitely hungry.
Some lower leaves already yellowed and dropped.
Pots are light, but they can handle it.
Now I have a better idea of how long they can go without watering in this kind of weather.
(Though it's only going to get hotter....)

Left pot: older L'n'L Jones female, re-vegging Grail NLD pheno female (from last grow).
Middle pot: younger L'n'L Jones female, two Grail x ThaiFrican females (male already removed in this pic)
Right pot: two re-vegging SSSTN (super sticky girl and fluffy girl, from last grow).

Older L'n'L Jones fem:
PXL_20240511_014006845.jpg

She's already taken some pollen from the Grail x ThaiFrican male that I left.
But you can see that she's got nice frost on her.
She's about to put out a big burst of calyxes now, you can see it building up.

Re-vegging Grail NLD pheno:
PXL_20240511_014012487.jpg

Definitely moving in the vegetative direction, as the tops are now all 3 leaflet.
The nodal length is still very very short though, she's a bit hesitant.
I took a cutting from her (see next post) for fun.

Middle pot: younger L'n'L Jones female, two Grail x ThaiFrican females (male already removed in this pic)

Little L'n'L Jones:
PXL_20240511_014020774.jpg

Slow start, but steady. Thought she would have died without any water, but she's okay!
Maybe she's just slow and will take her time to put on some size before flowering. Here's hoping!

Grail x ThaiFrican One:
PXL_20240511_014024254.jpg

Classic NLD sativa look about her.
A few pollinated calyxes, so there will be some Grail x ThaiFrican F2 seeds in the future.
She's only just starting the stretch, so here's hoping she'll put on some height.

Grail x ThaiFrican Two:
PXL_20240511_014027954.jpg

Shorter but slightly more NLD shape.
Also barely starting to flower, so should have some time to put on some size.

Right pot: two re-vegging SSSTN (super sticky girl and fluffy girl, from last grow).

I think this pic is from the first 'big miss' super sticky pheno.
PXL_20240511_014037146.jpg

I mean, that's not flowering, but it's not really vegging either!
Maybe the feeding will start her in the right direction (?)

And the fluffier 'little miss' pheno:
PXL_20240511_014037146.jpg

Looks almost identical, and equally indecisive about what she's doing!

More pics in the next post or two...

Cutting from the Grail NLD pheno:
PXL_20240511_014244299.MP.jpg

Now, I must tell you about this Grail girl.
The mother wasn't very big, so I didn't want to sample too much of her before a bit of a cure.
Tried her out a few days ago, should be two months after the harvest, so she's been cured for a bit.
For most, I do maybe two or three nice bong loads, it's enough to get high but still function.

I tried three bong loads with this Grail NLD pheno.

Bam! She hits fast, and has a real psychedelic spin to her.
Just 5 minutes later, I was walking back down the forest path, and my vision was like skipping frames.
Totally entranced by the leaves and sticks on the path.
Then my hearing started up, and the sounds of the forest were amazing.
Fully lost in the experience of nature for a while there.

This is some seriously good and strong sativa herb!
Nevil and @ojd -- you've created a winner here.
I obviously want to try some more, but can't be greedy as there isn't much.
But will be back to sample some more every so often to see how she develops.

That's why I am particularly interested in getting a cutting of this girl.

Peace and Love,

🦇🦇🦇 Bats 🦇🦇🦇

I know you all want to know more about the bats.
So Maria risked life and limb to take a few more pics.
They are less active during the day, but some still fly around.
(Do bats take turns being on guard duty or something??)
I think they are increasing in numbers.
There must be many hundreds in there now, in several garage sections.

All these photos are from different areas.
There are some areas I didn't get pics from.
Maybe already 500+ bats just in this pics above!

To give you an idea of the bat fly-by, let's see if I can upload a video.
...
File too large.
Imagine seeing all these bats hanging around and above you,
and then a few of them flying past within a meter or two of your head!

Lot of rain in the last 24+ hours, a couple of inches worth, but finished now.
Should really soak those pots after last week that was dry (and my watering a couple of days ago).
Will help wet up the dry organic amendments I added too, break them down and make them available.
Now the sun can come out again and the girls get back to growing nice and strong!

That is like a guano factory you got there, Maria. Surely they know you by now, maybe you can train them to attack intruders (using blood sausages as prizes!)
Nice abundant warm rain in veg followed by sun technically is the best conditions for a great boost in sativas, hope next visit will prove it.

They always send out a few to check me out.
But I think you're right, they know me already, and I'm not dangerous.
They will be my minions of the night!

PXL_20240518_022250552.jpg

This is the main concentrated area.
But there are a number of other roosting zones.
Must be well over 500 of them in here, maybe near 1000!

The weather has been great, and they've made some good growth in the last week.
Update below...

Spring-Summer Grow Begins -- Maria among the Hazes!

Day 57

Apart from some pretty heavy rain over a 36 hr period earlier in the week,
it's otherwise been quite sunny, with daily highs around 23C-28C or so, and the usual strong winds.

The last feeding was good for them, and while they're a bit greener they're still light green not dark.
I think the N levels are about right.
And the organic amendments will slowly work their way in over the next couple of weeks, too.
In addition to the watering from the pond,
I used up the other half of the non-organic mix I left on site last time.
It should be fairly light, maybe just a few hundred ppm.
But that will help with their overall health until the organics break down.

Remember, the big concern with this round was the light hours and flowering:
Will they just go into and keep flowering with 13/11, even though the days are getting longer?
Or will they veg over the summer to 13.5/10.5 and go into flower after a few months?
Or will they just be very confused and not know what to do??
It seems we've got a bit of everything here!

A couple of family shots:

Left pot: Older L'n'L Jones, revegging Grail (NLD pheno)
Middle pot: Younger L'n'L Jones, two Grail x ThaiFricans
Right pot: Two revegging SSSTN (sticky and fluffy)

PXL_20240518_021353696.jpg

Older L'n'L Jones:

PXL_20240518_021401465.jpg

This girl is definitely hitting flowering hard.
She was (kind of accidentally) dusted by the Grail x ThaiFrican male.
But she's definitely putting out more rounds of flowers as well.
Trichomes on the calyxes and inner leaves.
Can definitely see the indica in the mix -- the sensitivity to light, flower formation, trichome dev.

Revegging Grail (NLD pheno):

PXL_20240518_021411135.MP.jpg

She's now also putting out some five-leaflet leaves.
It seems for now she is definitely on "veg" mode, and not "flower mode."
Fine by me, as it will mean she can put on some size.
Node length still very short, though.
She has about 3 or 4 main heads at the moment, with a couple of smaller ones as well.

There's a good chance once her pot-mate L'n'L is finished, another month or more I'm guessing,
she will still be growing strongly and I can give her the whole pot to herself.

Middle pot: Younger L'n'L Jones, two Grail x ThaiFricans

PXL_20240518_021418004.jpg

All looking very happy together.

Younger L'n'L Jones:

PXL_20240518_021423197.jpg

She's already shown some pistils and flipped to three-leaflet leaves up top.
I figure she's either about to hit a sudden growth/stretch point soon, or just be kind of stunted like this until the end. Or maybe she's not entirely sure if she wants to flower.

First Grail x ThaiFrican

PXL_20240518_021428377.jpg

This Grail x ThaiFrican lady is more into flowering.
She's in stretch, and leaflets from five to three points already.
Some nice little side branches showing too.
She is definitely a sativa NLD pheno, so may just keep stretching for a long time.

Second Grail x ThaiFrican

PXL_20240518_021431956.MP.jpg

Pretty similar to the first Grail x ThaiFrican.
Very NLD sativa, similar side branching at this point,
but just keeping a bit shorter and less signs of flowering, for now, though she is female.

I'm looking forward to seeing what this Grail x ThaiFrican cross will throw out.
Obviously something long and sativa, but there are a lot of things in the mix,
so it could lean NvHz, or Mullumbimby, or the Thai, or the Kariba --- some combination of them all.

Peace and Love,
~MJS

Right pot: Two revegging SSSTN (sticky and fluffy)

PXL_20240518_021437098.jpg

Still on the re-veg mode, but some signs they are thinking more about vegging than flowering right now.
It's a crazy mess in this pot, hahahahaaa!

Sticky
PXL_20240518_021444561.jpg

See the three leaflet leaves there?
She's thinking more about veg, great!
Maybe she can grow nice and big over summer, and see what happens in the fall!

Fluffy
PXL_20240518_021451615.jpg

Also showing the three leaflet.
But not really sure if I want to keep fluffy, to be honest.
Those nanas in mid to late flowering weren't great.
The high is nice, buds a fair bit fluffier than sticky, though.
Leave her to do her thing for now,
but if they really get going and sticky is looking strong,
then fluffy may have to go.

Bat buddies und beautiful crazy sativas 🥰

Thanks for sharing and taking us along on your jungle adventures Maria 🤙🏼

Seems like your new access through the garage level is perfect. Bat buddies guarding it and no more hassle with workers or others seeing you squeeze through the gate or scale a wall.

And I'm always happy to pick up little bits of knowledge when you describe the development of your ladies.

And I'm always happy to pick up little bits of knowledge when you describe the development of your ladies.

I know most of you are here for the bat updates these days,
but I have some cute plants you can look at while you wait!

Access is better. Though I still have to jump through a relatively small hole in the outside wall.
It's easier than following the wall through the forest though.

But, just realized this today:
I will take photos of the bat cave every time I visit.
And if any authorities ask me what I'm doing there,
I can tell them that I like to come and see the bats, and show them photos.
It's a perfect cover story!
(I move my garden pics to a safe folder before I even leave the site.)

As for bits of knowledge, haha, just me doing the roughest job possible here!
Maybe we can all learn a little bit about natural revegging outdoors,
and how different plants respond differently to the light-cycles.
More indica seems to want to go easily into flowering at these light cycles around 12/12 to 13/11,
whereas the very heavy sativa plants really just veg when it's above 12/12.

Still feel like I need a bigger pot or two at the garden.
The bigger pots keep the moisture better and don't dry out if it doesn't rain much.
And with the chances that some of these girls may veg all summer,
we could have a medium (or bigger) sized plant or two by fall, and they'll need a lot of root space!
