Male clones transformed to Female to judge male smoking quality

Yes Chimera, I also first read about this method over 10 years ago, but I had no reason to try it as I did not want to make all male seed lines, I am a little bit interested in using transformed males to females to judge their qualities via smoking etc. And helping others to maybe use the info.
Looking forward to your answers.

What happened to hyb/eXe, and his STS product? I never see him on any forums after he left OG.

Intersting thread Sam,I'd never really givien much thought to reversing males.I've had male hermies before but I always discard them.I assume the harder it is to reverse the male,the closer it is to a true male.Anyway,I've got a little jug of GA 4% that I'll try on my next available male.

Ethylene is what you want JLP, not Giberrelic acid. That is if you want your males to show female characteristics.

GA = Testosterone for plants
Ethylene = Estrogen for plants

Don't use Giberrelic acid.
Use Ethrel (ethephon 480 g as/L) it breaks down to Ethylene.
I will make a sticky once we have all the info to make this easy to do.

Hey Sam,I found some stuff here in the US in one pint bottles that's readily available and cheap.It goes by the brand name FLOREL-(Ethephon[(2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid]).According to the product label it contains .33 lbs. Ethephon per gallon which roughly works out to a little over 30 gm/l.I see you're using 1 ml per litre of 480 gm/l so I guess I can use about 16 ml/l to achieve the same result?Ebay has it for about $20 US with shipping.

Chimera,

One more question, have you transformed a YY male to female? Any differences from XY males transformed to female?

Well my first attempt at transforming a male into female was not successful, I used 1ml to 1 liter of water. I will try again with 2-5ml in 1 liter of water.
My male clone had two main stems, I treated one and left the other untreated. The treated branch did not flower, male or female, the untreated branch did flower male as normal.
Chimera had suggested my ethephon levels were to low, I bet he was right.
I will try again shortly and post the results.

Well,Ive done a couple tests on males now.I was unable to find Ethrel by Bayer but found Florel for sale,however it is a lesser concentration.

I started with a higher concentration than Sam,about double according to my math and applied once a week.After about 3 weeks the first male was just about dead.The plant had stopped producing pollen sacs but no pistils were visible.Here's a before and after shot:

Day one:

3 weeks later:

The higher concentration had a bad effect on the foilage mainly.

Here's a closer look at the floral stucture:

With the second male I cut the dosage in half and applied at 2 week intervals.It still killed off a few fan leaves the first week but not near as bad as the first male.I grew this one in my box for a month and it finally did appear to produce a few pistils:

I think the theory behind this is solid and it is possible to get female pistils from a male by applying Ethephon but it doesn't seem very practical if you want to produce something smokeable.

One other small note.The first male was about a week after showing and had developed pollen sacs.The second male I got just as it began to show.Both were grown from seed and were the same strain.

This is seriously a huge idea sams :yes:
No idea..lol....or theory JLP...its been tried, true and tested...:joint:

i believe Obsoul33t was the first to do this a while back.....guess he was very successful and was able to get some buds to smoke to choose the males he wanted.

saw a couple members with his gear already in flower...no more pickedn needles in a hay stack with random males...get the traits you want the right way..think it was called Alien Tech and is found at only 1 site that i know of..my 2 cent :joint:

I had a male leda uno that turned into a herm at about three weeks, Im a bit confused from reading the dj short articles and different articles that sometimes these are good males to use because they technically contain more of the female hormone than usual, I did kill it off but dont know if it was a wise desision now because it was pretty strong even at two weeks of flowering, so if antone could clarrify this for me I would appreciate it :joint:

With all due respect to Sam et al, from what little I know or think I understand....

With selecting a quality male to breed with, you never really know if it is going to be good untill you make the cross and grow out the progeny and compare it against others. While this is obviously massively time and space consuming, with attendant possible legal problems ... from what [little] I have learned, I believed this to be "the only real way" to test a male out.

Again, from what little I know, do not some plants have significantly different "combination charachteristics" for breeding purposes ? ...e.g. pure Haze has a strong influence, [I think Sam said it improves almost everything it is crossed to, including increasing THC to above that of both parents] whereas [iirc] Rez recently used Sensi's Hindu Kush [for Snowdog and possibly Chemdog] BX'es deliberately as it has a weak influence ? This surely is also, to some [may well be smaller, but significant] extent, governed by the individual pheno, not just the breed itself ?

I don't use males with intersex genes like I don't use females with intersex genes. Why propagate intersex genes? I don't agree with DJ short on that one. Ethylene is the female hormone, which means it is on the "X" chromosome because it is linked to females. GA is on the "Y". Intersex genes mess up the sex linked hormones production from the sex chromosomes. They mess it up by either producing ethylene and or GA or by inhibiting the production of ethylene and GA resulting in mixed sexual characteristics. IT is similar to humans with testosterone and estrogen, if a man stops producing or produces less than normal testosterone he starts looking more feminine. Females getting testosterone supplements start showing male characteristics. We are not viable reproductively the same as plants, but you can get an idea of whats going on.

This seems like a good Idea, make sure to collect pollin before turning into a female in order to deep strait genes. Then again soon as the first pistils come out itll probly polinate itself so you wont be able to see what it would have been like had it full flowerred as a female.
