Malawi Style Cob Curing.

regular sheets of paper work fine too.
I sweated/fermented in a crockpot at 50c for 2days with the first 12 hours done in a bag that was not vacuum sealed. there was a significant change to both color and odor.
i broke off a little bit of the dry ends and smoked them around 9pm. it was super smooth smoke but not really flavorful. and it kept me awake till 1am

ok i opened my cob and took pictures. <gasp!>

when i first opened it, it smelled so wonderfully stinky. heavy heavy mango scent. this particular blue vixen smells like mangoes when growing and again after a 3+ month cure as laid out by simon in his thread.
but this mango was more rotten and pickled. more sweet and yet sharp sour notes.

a few hours ago i set the cob on the water heater, and now the paper is mostly dry and the cob is slightly spongy and smells heavily of astringent lemon cleaner.

Hi my friend great that you gave it a go, that cob looks very well fermented, partially dry it so its dry on the outside but still a little moist in the center.
Then reseal it in the vacuum for at least a month to age at room temperature. You will see that after one month the high is a lot more intense and just keeps getting better every month you age it, when they are freshly dried they are only about 25% of the power they can get too by 3 months aging. After 3 months they slow down and remain mostly the same.
With a little practice and the right strain you will amaze yourself with the intensity of the high you can produce.
Respect to you for giving it a go you cant hurry perfection.

i think i may need to dry it more.
i already resealed it and have it curing because the paper was dry but the cob wasnt.
i debated on changing the paper, but decided against it.
i kept some out of the cob to have something to smoke, and its nose changes with every whiff.
it goes from the familiar fermented mangos to lemon candy to cherry lollipos to a combo of all three which reminds me of fruit punch.
seriously i thought doing this to my blue vixen would be a proper send off (lost the mother shortly after the last flip) but its going to make me miss her more with all these wonderful flavours and smells i never sniffed before.
but it'll make for an exciting 4/20.(side thought -- we as stoners should have a different day to celebrate besides hitlers bday)

Thanks so much Tang for this very inspiring thread! :tiphat:

This is pretty exciting stuff. I just want to check in with all you accomplished cob fans to ask if it seems like I’m on the right track... these pics show my progression up till the end of the initial sweat. I let it sit out for a while, then rewrapped it - tried to do a better job with the string but was unsuccessful. It’s vac sealed. I think I’ll take it out after a week or so to check it, rewrap, reseal, and give it about a month... sound like a plan?

I use tin foil. Works great if you squeeze out all the air and use several layers of it.

Mould has burned me before! I am weary of it :p I would rather a climate like Tang's
Interesting what you have found with high temp and short time for the fermentation. I was going to try a low and long (yoghurt maker). May do two batches. Thanks for the info tho!

This is my next candidate for the cob should be ready in 3 to 4 weeks.
Its at 11 weeks flower at the moment.
Also a Zamaldelica cob ready for drying and then aging at least a month before I try it. I cant wait it smells amazing already and its a new pheno to me so it should have a different high when its been aged.

Seeds

Seeds

I was taking a sample off of the cobs before sealing them to age and I broke one in half to find a seed. The only pollen ever in the tent is Mulanje x TT or it pollinated itself either way I will take it and any others I find, bonus.
These cobs are going to be good once aged they are a bit too stony as expected at the moment but in a couple of months, well they are both keepers.

Perfect end to a perfect day.

Microscope resin shots

Microscope resin shots

Some shots of the resin after curing for 1 month at room temp after the sweating. Notice the color it was all clear and cloudy when harvested.

The last two shots are of 1 year aged Panama and some Mulanji that I cured with a different technique to the other and is currently making me feel very creative ha ha.

Swazi bonanza

Swazi bonanza

These are my Swazi cobs that have been curing for a month at room temps and have now been dried at 50c for 20mins and smell very strongly of sickly sweet pine and other smells only a cobber will appreciate as meaningful.
I have given 2 away already and had rave reviews from the recipient.
I will probably only get around to sampling them in a couple of months or more.
I am still sampling the stuff I made 12 months ago, you know how it is you have to keep sampling the same cobs to make sure you were right the first 10 times ha ha. Getting into the music you know when you are so high you get a cold nose well that was 30 mins ago, I love this Mulanji cob such a clean energetic trippy high, its got everything you could want in a high.

Hey Snook. :)

My grocery store didn’t have husks for tamales. So I ordered from Amazon - gotta love that two-day Prime shipping. There was no way I was getting an ounce in that baby. That is sixteen grams. I’m fine holding back on the weight since I was/am a bit concerned about mold. I’m thinking: start small. This is my first time. I expect to make mistakes. But hopefully not.

OCD? Nah, just that side of me that wants to do the best it can at whatever it does, showing through. (I really did struggle with that string - stuff was pissing me off.)

My cob is drying right now - as I type this - before its final wrap and seal for the big month-long sleep... gonna be a damn long month. Here she is as of now:

Golden Tiger

Golden Tiger

Here is a shot of a Golden Tiger control bud that was dried for 2 days sealed and sweated for 24hrs at 40c in a yogurt maker and is now being partially dried before aging.
The cob I made from the same buds is also drying ready for re sealing and cold curing for a further month. Before drying further and then aging for 2 months minimum before she will be ready for spacing me out ha ha.
This bud was sealed up alongside the cob so I can see when it has changed color enough to be removed and dried further, hence the name control bud, it saves me opening the bag and cob to check the fermentation.

The second pic is a piece of un aged Zamaldelica cob that I cant stop sniffing and admiring its also going to a dynamite cob in a few months real tripping weed both of them.

I am happily buzzing away, Excellent mood. Love the high. Clear headed in a stoned sort of way. Would be nice to do this on a day off at the beach.

Wish I had a way to take a pic thru my magnifier but I saw
goldish Brown Trichomes where clear and cloudy had once been.

Nice, try drying it and aging a month dried, it will increase in power and clarity my friend. Its amazing the difference once dried and aged a bit its like a new variety.
