lolryn: No clue what I'm doing, but stuff is growing thread

Hey guys/gals,

Most of you do not know me, as I'm fairly new here and relatively new to cannabis cultivation.

For the most part I'd consider myself a hobbyist, but ever since I've started posting on here, and seeing what other great growers are doing, it's made me want to step my game up - well, as much as I can with what I've got.

So, I've decided to make a thread dedicated to sharing what's going on in my garden.

I've found posting updates on my garden(RKU journal) has helped me stay on top of things in there. It's also turned into a mental release. sadly, because of how hush-hush things are regarding these beautiful plants, it's hard to share my grows with people and receive praise because - well we are not growing tomatoes (lol).

I welcome all constructed criticism, and questions. I am not a pro by any means. I am here to learn, not throw fits and get butt tickled because someone called my plants bad.

Anyways, enough about the background bullshit. Lets get to the plants.

Current:
Bodhi RKU (veg and flower/sex'd)
Bodhi TranqEleV2 (flowering/4/4 Male)
GDP Purple Dream (flower)
HSO 707 Headband (veg/fem)
THSeeds Sage 'n Sour (flower)
GDP Purple Dream x Bodhi Blue Tara (4x seedlings)
Bodhi Blue Tara (4x seedlings)
Future:
Bodhi Lotus Larry
More Bodhi Blockhead Bx

I'll update this list when I come across some really special stuff :)

Back plants are RKU (it's really crowded right now):

Blockhead Bx:

This blockhead just started showing balls last night sadly. BUT, this plant's got some ridiculously strong/thick branches, so I may keep it and see what happens :)

4xTranquil Elephantizer v2:

2 need transplanting, but I ran out of soil and space!

growing takes time, so I'm gonna pull up a chair, pack a bowl, and watch the grass grow! I invite anyone who wants to join me, to pull up a chair - Shit could get interesting!

Do you have a color filter on your camera lens?

I do not. I just switched over to LED about 2 months ago. HPS was easy, switching the camera to incandescent mode and stuff.

is there a way to cancel out most of that purple? I have a measly cellphone camera, that's all.

lolryn, coolness! so much variety man.

what kind of led fixture are you using? we are using a led too, so anything led spikes my interest.

also, are you growing in a tent? what space?

what's your environment like?

an easy way to get good pics under the leds is to put the lens of the camera in front of those glasses made to see right under the led light, they are pricey though (for me), so I have not gotten a pair yet. otherwise, you need a camera that lets you control the white balance properly.

peace!

I just got a 900w LED unit with nine 100w chips. The light colour is much more whiter than on your pictures, even though there isn't any whites in the chips.

the led fixture we are using puts out a light very similar in color as that of lolryn. ours is a small 340 watts, 9 COBs, each made of 3 watt diodes x 25.

Hey Bombadil,

I'm using 2x mars2 1200's, one in each 4x4 secret jardin tent for flowering. I transformed a ~3.5'x2.5' trophy case that was built into the wall, into my veg area. It's REALLY limited right now, but I'm thinking of setting up another area for smaller plants/cuttings and utilizing the t5 fixture I bought. The veg light is an old style mars 300... works well for the space. Currently, due to where I am located, it's really hard to get rooms dialed in, in the winter, so I can't really give any specifics of my environment.

Are you talking polarized lenses like what you'd use for HPS? if not I was totally unaware they made lenses specifically for LED's. Doesn't surprise me that they would be pricey.

messed with the balance as much as I could, and I think this is the clearest shot I can get, without doing a closeup with the flash on.

I forgot to mention that the veg LED is a different spectrum than the flowering LED.... here is what my flowering LED's look like, a bit "whiter".

For pics, just turn off the LED, and use room light or a clamp lamp and 23w cfl. -granger

Thank you, I will probably try to do that from now on. Keep the pics to only lights off pics.

To everyone who celebrates it, have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!

Do you have grow glasses? Ive seen some advertised as LED specific. hold your lens to the glasses and youll get a better shot. Far from perfect, but a better representation.

Thank you! I found the plants to be much happier under LED, but So far, I think the yield is lacking compared to the HPS. I'm still running strains under them to see if that's true.

I do not have LED specific glasses. I really don't bother with the plants too much when the lights are on to warrant the cost. I am going to start taking pics when lights go off for the best representation :p

those plants under the flowering led panel look very happy, how far are they in? looks somewhere between 4-6 weeks?

my friend has the same issues with environment, cannot really have 100% control over it, as the little tent seats in a room with an open window; now the temperatures have dropped a lot and the humidity has spiked! but the plants are looking very happy.

I go to his place religiously four times a week, mostly to feed them and see everything is doing ok, but I'm only there when the lights are on, so 95% of the pics I've taken are under the leds, even though I've managed to take them out of the tent to take pics out of the leds. hopefully tomorrow I'll do a few more pics out of the leds.

we are thinking that by Christmas they will be ready, and we'll get our first ever Christmas present, considering that we are Jewish and all; I may just have to dress as Santa Clause for harvest day :chin:

peace man!

ya man, the plants seems extremely happy under the LED's so far. I'm still unsure about the yield as I've only harvested one plant with pretty unsatisfying results... it was a brand new strain I've never grown before so I don't know how to compare it to my HPS' yields. I'll get a better feeling for yield in about a month when the Purple Dream comes out of flower.

That flowering pic is only of one massively trained plant. it's about a 3'x3' canopy of RKU. surprisingly that plant was only vegged for about a month. It's about 6.5 weeks through and is starting to fade off nicely.
20141127_202235_zps0ckzqt7z.jpg

sorry, hand is a little shaky tonight.

The environment issues I've had were, in the summers, way too fucking hot and humid and in the winter, way too fucking cold and dry... so by that description you can tell I am from the north east.
In the summer, with HPS, I was reaching 85-90 in dead summer.... but I lost a few crops to bud rot and shit because the humidity is like 85% pretty consistently... OUTSIDE! not including inside where the HPS is like a million degrees. where one of my tents is, it can not be vented to outside, so the tent kinda exhausts into the room, and then that air is moved out.

tl;dr: I had shitty HPS venting alongside shitty weather, and then hit with a 46% electricity bill increase. I was basically forced to buy LED and so far I'm not unhappy. Even if the yields aren't as great as HPS, I'll make it work.

I'm thinking SOG in 3gal's is the way to go. less soil, more plants, more variety, same or better yield/sqft than growing out trees. with a lot less light penetration than HPS.

if you grab some pics of your stuff tomorrow, feel free to post in here! I'd love to check it out!

hello lolryn :)

what do you call unsatisfactory results in terms of yield?

I have horror stories about yield, stuff like 10 grams dried from one plant lol...

we are in different climates, here in summer is very hot and super dry and in winter very cold and very humid, and due to not having means to control 100% environment, due to space and costs, we just pray that the plants develop as they should with the minimum indoor environment we can provide.

how many HPS watts were you running for a 46% increase in electricity bill? that's a lot!

that plant looks super healthy, and congratulations on the very good training job! impressive considering the little veg time, was it a clone or from seed?

here you can see four blue moon rocks (BOG) at four weeks, they were pollinated by a single bmr male we got out of the five original seeds we planted, we were super lucky in the female / male ratio.

these are tiny plants but they have tons of bud sites and super tight inter node spacing, more tight than I'd like, except for one which is the one that expressed the most stretch, check them out:

can't wait for them to be done :D

keep updating your grow man, it looks awesome and surely that one plant will yield you well!

much peace and good health to you and yours!

Bombadil, those plants look super nice! I love how small they are (that's about the size I think I'm going to shoot for with SOG)... yet it's like looking through a forest of bud. Looks great man, keep it up!

As for yield... It's way too early for me to say, but like I said... first time I've grown this strain and just finished my first harvest with an LED... So I'm really unsure what to expect. The purple dream will be a better judge, because I've been growing that for about a year and a half, under HPS.

Anyways, the buds looked really small on the plant, when dried, and I had to chop earlier than I wanted to due to signs of hermie. just by eyeballing it (2 mason jars with smallish buds), it looked like I had about 2 ounces.... but I weighed it this morning and it came out to a very surprising 100 grams +/-5 grams. she wasn't a big plant either, just a clone off of the plant above.

20141109_212102_zps5l4ahxy1.jpg

here's a pic of the RKU from seed about 10 days after I put it into flower... I ray riced the shit out of her, but she took it well and exploded during the stretch.
20141026_120331_zpsxgfwukoh.jpg

for comparison, this was her about 5 days before I put her into flower:
20140929_173637_zpsuneiwvn2.jpg

When I was using HPS, I was running about 2000 watts of 12/12. My electric bill didn't increase due to usage, it increased because Nstar doesn't make enough money, duh! It was a county-wide hike, not just me... I need to look into solar.
