I add 2 oz. to 1 gallon of water for soil teas or foliar spray. I spray the plants 1x a week to apply neem oil, Spinosad or pureed mint extracts.

I use the Tropf Blumat watering cones which cannot take any organic material in the reservoir or even liquid Silica. I apply a 'tea' in and around the cones about 1x per week that includes aloe vera juice.

So add 656.03 grams AgSil to 1 gallon of water to approximate ProTekt concentrate.
gregor_mendel

Not to belabor this point but see if I'm following you. The number of grams per 1 gallon of water, 656 grams, is easily divisible by 16 which is the number of cups in 1 gallon of water and that equals 41 units.

So 41 grams of AgSil mixed with 8 ounces of water will approximate Pro-TeKt, correct?

Thanks!

Just like when using fresh leaves you have to contend with fermentation issues (from the Benzoic acid) so either mix up what you need for that day's application or you have to do what companies like LoTD do - use a preservative.

I'd say mix what you need and be done with it.

What fermentation issues? Aloe has a shelf life? cant i blend me up some fresh leaves and bottle them for later use?

If not is the fermentation you speak off when the liquid goes a dark brown?

i purchased some "cuban oregano" also known as Spanish thyme last year for my outdoor garden

it has a pronounced smell somewhat similar to coriander and I noticed NOTHING (pest, disease) etc touched it so i brought it indoors (just in time thankfully) with some lavender as companion plants and as potential ingredients for foliar sprays. I did a litle research and it is used as an insect repellant and as a medicine but i can find little real life anecdotal experience other than my own.

anyone with it or lavedar as companion plats or foliar ingredients ?

thank you in advance

Aloe vera contains measurable levels of Benzoic acid (internally) and when exposed to air it begins to ferment within 20 minutes or less. Salt is added during commercial extraction which gives you the 'Sodium Benzoate' on the label.

The retail products that you want to buy are those that use preservatives like Citric acid, Ascorbic acid, etc.

Even then refrigeration is required regardless of which preservative a specific product contains.

I've seen that plant but with a different name. It's a member of the Mint family (Lamiaceae) as is Lavender. It is a true Oregano which are used in commercial pesticides from companies in Canada (EcoTrol for example) as well as Holland for food plants grown in greenhouses. The active compound most identified with the pesticide aspect are Linalool and Camphor.

Take 1 cup of leaves and smash them to get as much as possible. Put the leaves into a food processor with enough water to make a puree. Add the puree to a container and fill with enough water to make 1 gallon. Let that sit for 48 hours in a warm place - like the corner in your veg tent (longer hours).

At the end of 48 hours strain the plant material from the water and you now have a pesticide concentrate. Mix 1 cup of this concentrate with 15 cups of water = 1 gallon of pesticide spray.

Adding 1 teaspoon of Pro-TeKt and 1/4 cup of aloe vera (Saponins) is a good practice.

Curious about adding ProTekt to the insecticide posted above.
Is it just good practice to foliar the silica, or does have some mechanical effect, like the aloe does?

Thank you for the response CC, was just looking for a little reassurance. i'll also try the cuban oregano thing, i have a decent sized variegated one i just brought in. i've only been using it as a spice, but it smells so good i can't wait to use it as a foliar now.

I wanted to also add that i've used Yucca leaf for the sapponins to some success and it's a pretty common find at older cemetery's for some free gathering(usually free of other people too).

Okay - here's what is on the AgSil 16H label:

Potassium Silicate Guaranteed Analysis
Nitrogen - 0%
Phosphate - 0%
Potassium - 32%
Silica (SiO2) - 52.8%
0.7 grams in 1 gallon of water yields 49 ppm Potassium and 98 ppm SiO2 or 46 ppm of Si

Element concentration range of common nutrient solutions:
Potassium 80 - 350 ppm
SiO2: 0 - 200 ppm
Not too helpful.

Dyna-Gro Pro-TeKt Guaranteed Analysis
Potassium: 3.7%
Silicon (SiO2) 7.8%
That then are the numbers for the concentrate, correct? (That's a question actually)

So how does one take the AgSil and make a gallon of concentrated Pro-TeKt?

Once we have the answer to that then the other ratios would be easy to figure out perhaps.

First of all credit where it is due...Avenger figured this out for me, he does most of me heavy chemistry lifting.

Re: Ag Sil vs ProTekt
Concentration(stock) × Volume(stock) = Concentration(dilute) × Volume(dilute)

52.8 X ? = 7.8 X 1

?= 0.1477

147.7 grams of 52.8% AgSil in one liter final volume gives you a solution with 7.8% SiO2
or
559.57 grams of Agsil 16H per gallon final volume, to get a solution with 7.8% SiO2

in reality if you want a copy of the Protek you'd be better off getting the agsil 25. It is what Protek is made from, or atleast physically and chemically more similar. With 8.3% K2O and 20.8% SiO2 it is a 2.5 weight ratio SiO2:K2O and it is a liquid already.
Protek is:
7.8/3=2.6 weight ratio

and really the 3% from the GA is probably understated for legal labeling reasons.

Using the AgSil 16H to make a liquid concentrate with the same 7.8% SiO2 as the protek gives you 4.7% K2O.

So 4.7%K2O and 7.8% SiO2. for the Agsil16H concentrate compared
to 3% K2O and 7.8% SiO2 for the protek or diluted Agsil25.

What I don't know is if ProTekt uses any trick to get that concentrated a solution...but I guess you will find out. A lot of bottle nute companies tend to add fine clay to keep things at least in suspension.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm a little out of my league here, having very few grows under my belt, even fewer successful, and all of them chemical hydro.

I will be starting with a simple soil-less organic mix (Subcool's Super Soil meets LC's) to get things going while I learn more about organics and recycling. I am mainly attracted by the idea of near-zero inputs.

My priorities are simplicity (low time, low labour, few ingredients, water only mix), followed by quality (not quantity, this is personal only and I don't smoke a lot), followed by cost. So organic recycling seems a great fit.

So, while I'm starting the first organic soil-less grow I mentioned, what should get started on in order to be ready for recycling: bokashi kitchen compost, worm bin, ??? I do have space constraints, all indoors in a small basement suite with a wife who doesn't want anything to do with dirt and bugs, and two very small boys who get into everything that isn't locked up :)

Thanks.

I would advise anyone who read my calculations on ProTekt and YSs to take his over mine. He and Avenger have far more experience with salt compounds than I do. He also answered the question I had over why my potassium numbers weren't coming up where I expected.

YS:

Are my numbers different because I did everything based on weight (w/w) as opposed to volume (w/v)?

I did not go through your calc...but that would be my guess. When you deal with w/v you have to take into account the specific gravity of the liquid.

If you want maybe I can talk Avenger into taking a look. Or just follow what his calc was for future reference.

I try to avoid the "white lab coat" talk in this thread out of respect for the topic.

interesting. could you use the "leftover" water just to water your plants, if not then why?
and of course use the green stuff in the first bag to go to compost or topdress etc.
i've understood that the terpenes in pine needles for example are not so preferable, is it the same for cannabis?

i have used bubble hash water as a foliar, straight out of the bucket, left to aerate for a few days and as a base to make tea with, the plants have always shown fresh growth, upright leaf position..

So 35 grams of Agsil 16 to 8 oz. of water gets us to 7.8% SiO2, correct?

35 grams = 1.5 oz. (everything rounded off) - makes the mixing ratio pretty straight forward
