Horticulture lighting began in Holland as a way to extend the day period in greenhouses - lights on for a couple of hours in the morning and then the lights would be turned on in the evening. Short fall and winter days that far north like the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia which has the overwhelming majority of greenhouse food production in North America.

hps; When I ran out to purchase the makings for 20+ lights the first time, I copied what the boys were using in the greenhouses...yes in BC. I used hps for both veg & flower and I survived.

may i ask why? this is said in a joking way... cause the hortilux poster hanging on the wall at the shop sez many plant studies were being done using the eye blue kawasaki bulbs.arent those halides?
unclefishstick

For the exact reasons that MM noted - it's what professional greenhouses run and one other argument is that at horticulture research labs at UW Puyallup, Oregon State University, UC Davis, Clemson University - HPS bulbs .

For veg the bulb of choice was the Philips 430 Son Agro (HPS with increased blue spectrum and watts) but now the Philips HPS CMH bulbs are more common - color spectrum.

Compare the color spectrums of CMH bulbs vs. MH and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Same here - I've never owned a MH rig and wouldn't

I've got one MH I built myself but the rest are switchables. I'm a MH in veg guy...and ideally a mixed spectrum of both Hortilux HPS and enhanced MH in flower. Last round was all MH in veg and Hortilux in flower for the FIRST time and results from flower were impressive.

I have done experiments with the same type under each bulb..it is clear that larger flowers develop under Hortilux bulbs.

As far as MH in veg compared to HPS in veg.....each lamp seems to be as equally productive for the period prior to flower.

What I like about MH in veg is the ease of spectrum on the eyes while all the staking, pruning, and cloning is going on.

this is the chart for the hortilux blues

i see your and MM's point though,i am trying to get my systems here more dialed in,i just use a regular halide bulb in veg, partly because i need to be able to photograph the plants since i do so many test grows so i need a more natural appearing light source, and they do seem to veg the plants up nicely.but ive never compared them side by side.

If you liked the 430 Son Agro then the CMH (HPS) bulbs will blow you away.

The HPS 'orange cast' will show up in photographs but when you look into the room it's white like MH. They were originally designed for warehouses to have a replacement for standard 'orange' HPS bulbs without any retrofitting required. A huge savings when you think about it.

in my experience the buds get larger under the hortilux hps,but i noted an increase in resin production under MH.im setting up a tent with a MH to finish plants under for the last week or two tomorrow,i will report back with pics..

i have an actual relevant question...
we sell a compost tea here at the shop, and i have a couple of questions.
how long will it remain alive once its sold? i tell people they need to use it within a couple hours of taking it home unless they have an airstone setup at home. is that true?

also, how much can it be diluted and still remain effective?

the recipe we use is

water from the koi tanks
ancient forest compost
floralicious vegan plant booster
molasses
General Organics bioweed
fox farms microbe brew

( i know,i know,i just work here,not my choice)

is this just total garbage? should i push for an ewc, kelp meal, molasses base?

i use fresh EWC outta my bin. i have to screen it a little so i don't plug the pipes. my usual tea is something like ewc plus some agave syrup, maybe a pinch of alfalfa, and some of the
microbe catalyst from kis. i do stop on the way home to grab some river water for the brew.

That's what I would do......

thats the work recipe,at home i do the usual suspects and add some bat guano on the second day of brewing

MrS. How are things with you today? The criticism I hear about CMH is that the broader spectrum it offers is not used by plants. I dunno, I just figured I'd stay with the HPS.
