Tracing back the history of the "queen of sativas" is like putting together a puzzle with many piecs of information that have been reported by several breeders and other insiders in recent decades.
In the early '70s there were two cannabis-breeding friends in *Santa Cruz, California, who called themselved "the Haze Brothers." They grew in greenhouses and did alot of genetic experiments with different landrace strains. Theit haze breeding project began with columbian/mexican sativa hybrids that were created in the first year. In their second year, a South Indian sativa male was used as a pollen source for extending the columbian/mexican to a three-way polybrid. Finally, A thai sativa male was used in their third year for furter polination. Thus, a sophisticated four-way sative polyhybrid came about in the end and a legend was born: Haze.
But in the hands of the haze brothers it was still a kind of varied genetic group with diverse phenotypes, not yet the stable and purebred strain known today as the "original haze" That special genetic selection was done by a Californian breeder cooperation called Sacxred seeds. They were the ones who, by continuous inbreeding and selecting, managed to preserve the essence of four sativa landraces in one stabalized phenotype that they called the Original Haze: A plant with tall and lanky growth; loose, fluffy buds, a long flowering time of 12-16 weeks or more; and a late outdoor maturation (december to january( But despite these unfavorable characteristics the Haze strain quickly became veery popular in California, because it set a new bud-quality standard, featuring an awesome cerebral high with a psychedelic edge and unique smell and taste: very sweet and complex, with both a spict and citrus like aroma. Many breeders, i.e. in Humboldt County, grew their own versions of Haze in the 70's often adding their own sativa varieties.
Although their Haze was originally bred for personal use and never meant for any retail purposes, The Haze Brothers laid the foundation for a big commercial hit once they passed their genetics on to other growers, like Sam the Skunkman from Sacred Seeds. It was Skunkman who brought the Original Haze to the Netherlands in 1984, along with many other classic US varieties such as Skunk #1, Early Girl, And California Orange. Skunkman sold his seeds to a couple of resident breeders, among them Nevil Schoenmakers (owner of the seed bank) Ben Dronkers (sensi seeds, which at the time was called Sensi Seed Club) and Eddie Reedeker (who later founded the seed compant the Flying dutchmen in 1998) The breeder Scott Blakey, AKA Shantibaba, also got his hands on the original, creating marvelous haze hybrids with it at greenhouse seeds in the 90's. Reefeker and skunkman worked closely together in those early days, sowing out the haze and other US seeds ten-thousand-fold in large greenhouses, creating new hybrids and producing seeds for the whole trade sector.
Marijuana botany author robert connell clarke state that the Flying Dutchmen has the purest haze. In fact, they are one of the only seed banks to offer it in its pure, authentic form. Breeder Bjoerd from the Flying Dutchmen recommends his Original Haze. Prdominantly for hybridization purposes, because "it brings out the best in them"
This way, the hybrid vigor effect-Which was lost with the pure Haze because it suffers from a certain inbreeding depression due to the fact that it has been maintained as a pure strain for decades now- is going to be restored. Most competitors have focused on creating and selling Haze hybrids because of the aformentioned unfavorable growing characteristics of the pure strain. Schoenmakers, for examble, was very successful with Northern lights #5 x Haze, winning the Mostly Sativa Crown at the High Times Cannabis cup 1990 before he got arrested with visiting Australia (the DEA had him on their list because he sold a damn lot of seeds from Holland to America by mail) The sensi seed club bought Schoenmaker's seed collection and then merged with the seed bank to become the Sensi Seed bank.
A small excerpt on handling haze, for medicinal growers or caretakers
The indoor growing of a pure haze or haze dominant hybrid can turn out to be a painful experience unless the grower is prepared for certain difficulties. There are a couple of factors that have to be taken into consideration when growing haze genetics. When growing Haze from seed on a standard area size of one 1 m2, one should shorten the vegetative period to about 10 days. (germination time not included) otherwise you can end up with big space problems. Haze varieties to strech alot, especially in the flowering period. Accordingly, closes should be kept in the vegetative state only for a few days or even directily put into flowering after having rooted, this would depend on the desired amount of plants per m2.
Another approach is to change the regular light regimen. Some growers start Haze with 13/11 (vegetative stage) and finish it with 11/13 (flowering stage) mimicking its natural latitude photoperiod. This method claims to keep internodes shorter than under regulat light conditions. When haze is grown at 12/12 in the flowering stage and wont stop flowering, it might help to shorten th light period to 10/14 or 11/13. Haze plants are susceptible to over-fertilization, and overdosing nitrogen can boost their length to uncomfortable positions.Blue light is known to promote compact internode growth, so the use of a high-wattage metal halide lamp for the vegetative stage can also help to retard the haze's strech effect. http://www.trickology.com/thebored/showthread.php?p=625330#post625330

Yes! That's the one I'm looking for! Something that kicks yer ass on the first 1/2 of the doob...not something that makes you think about rolling another one as soon as #1 is finished (90% of the pot out there, at least for me)
nice, i was trying to find that OG thread of the old SSSC catalogues for a while, i remember readin it a couple years ago and sayin daaaaaamn about the Nigerian Kandahar! those long uds were incredible. now l33t those are some awesome SSHs man! looks like a straight-to-flower dream plant huh. well i've got no info, just wanted to stop in n say wow and thanks
headman : you can always take a photo of them with a digital camera , no need for scanner I guess the quality wont be that good but it will be good enough
I had some photos of the famous haze male and a shantis mr nice breeding room, I'll try to find them and post them
A couple of years ago I ran off a bunch of copies of these 2 articles and sent them to a couple of members at CW.The mags are in storage but I can run more off when I clear out the storage room sometime this month....
Take care....................CC
The cannabis castle article has a few shots of the breeding rooms and the workers taking cuttings from mother plants. It is now run by Sensi Seeds.
greetings, after speaking to nevil, i stand corrected. the ssh is a nl5haze x skhaze. he said this cross gave a better result and i agree. it is a great plant.
