I took a flourescent fixture, mounted a 1k halide and 1k hps to it, then I used an old wheel hub off of my truck , bolted it to steel plate for stability, then bolted a sheet of plywood to it and made a turntable and i give them a 1/4 turn or so every day for equal exposure and ease of watering. It keeps them from running and it gives good penetration .

Conversion - Instantaneous PPFD to Integrated PPFD

Most light meters measure the instantaneous photosynthetic photon flux density in µmol m-2 s-1 and yet plant growth is determined by the integrated daily photosynthetic photon flux density in mol m-2 d-1.
Here is how to convert from µmol m-2 s-1 to mol m-2 d-1 when using electric lights.
There are 3600 seconds in an hour. If the electric light output is constant, the instantaneous PPFD can be added up (integrated) over an hour.
Therefore 1 µmol m-2 s-1 = 3600 µmol m-2 h-1.
This must be divided by a million (1,000,000) to convert from micromoles to moles: 3600 µmol m-2 h-1 = 0.0036 mol m-2 h-1.
If the electric lights are on continuously (24 hours), the hourly PPFD must be multiplied by 24 to get the daily PPFD: 0.0036 mol m-2 h-1 = 0.0864 mol m-2 d-1.
There are 86,400 seconds in a day (3600 x 24 hours) so the daily PPFD can be calculated directly from the instantaneous PPFD from the following equation: µmol m-2 s-1 multiplied by 86,400 and divided by 1,000,000 = mol m-2 d-1.
So: 1 µmol m-2 s-1 = 0.0864 mol m-2 d-1 with continuous light
These conversions are accurate only under electric lights. The integrated daily PPFD from sunlight changes during the day so a single measurement cannot be used to estimate daily PPFD.

Hey bud, I use a mixture of lights, depending on the season I use different arrangements, tbh if I had a warmer climate I'd only use Led, I'm @57 degrees lat so I need HID and fluorescent for the heat they give off.
20240303_175042.jpg

I start my seeds with 4x T5s grow them on under the the t5s then flip to flower.

sometimes it's led only other times I use Mh and Mh with 240w boards each side of it.

650/680w led

My favourite light isn't the best imo lol, there's something about hid plants love, led requires a bit gentle coaxing to really get them going...I suspect that's temp related?

The crops I'm getting from led are better than my hps crops which imo weren't too shody.

Have you tried Led + just a touch of incandescent? Worth looking into... Check out Greyfaders latest grow...

Incandescent have a much better coverage of reds + 660nm (better than hps and monst of hid) which are almost impossible to find in leds, but seems to have a fair bit of importance in horticulture context.

Hoping to try this myself next winter.

Hey bud, no I've not tried or even seen incandescent in a grow I'll check out Greyfaders grow, thank you.

Side note...years n years back I tried growing bag seeds with a 100w incandescent bulb the seedlings grew to circa a 1ft in two days 😂

I'm a little surprised to hear incandescent has something to add to led.

I did the same with the same results! Bolted like mfer. I would never rec it as a stand alone, but as a complement!

I mentioned it here as the original comment was growing with hid due to cold climate. I do believe youve already seen pics of this in the led bud quality thread.

The way i think of incandescent is like a wide far red channel, and only very little %. It also helps throw a bit of heat on the cannopy to help with transpiration. But i have still to try it myself, maybe this winter.

Greyfader/Delta9 is a very talented grower using a self built/invented hydro system which seems very legit, im still hoping to convince my growbuddy to try it. The only thing holding him back is that hes afraid of high water consumption; were under water restrictions where i am and we rely on rain water.

Edit: it helps if you look up the spectrum online and try to make a mental overlay of it at a 1:10 ratio with leds, its just a bit of extra reds, far reds and infra red, exactly where the led redbump starts to dropp off.

Thank you bud i appreciate the info, 1:10 as in 70w for my 720w bar light?

I've been enjoying my growing recently more than ever before, I'd be up for trying incandescent at some point if it's only 70w required, I only grow for me so it's difficult to justify costs although I enjoy messing with experimenting.

Havent tried myself but i believe that was the ratio he used, but his leds were less efficient. Maybe just a few bulbs with a dimmer, and look out for that bolting. Or even ask Greyfader, hes a good guy

Not to open a can of worms, but it would be interesting to find out if the implementation of UVB to the flowering cycle would curtail the incidence of fungal or mycotoxins on the plants?

Agriculture

Main articles: Atomic gardening and Food irradiation
Further information: Mutation breeding
After its discovery by Lewis Stadler at the University of Missouri, irradiation of seed and plant germplasm has resulted in creating many widely-grown cultivars of food crops worldwide.[14] The process, which consists of striking plant seeds or germplasm with radiation in the form of X-rays, UV waves, heavy-ion beams, or gamma rays, essentially induce lesions of the DNA, leading to mutations in the genome. The UN has been an active participant through the International Atomic Energy Agency. Irradiation is also employed to prevent the sprouting of certain cereals, onions, potatoes and garlic.[15] Appropriate irradiation doses are also used to produce insects for use in the sterile insect technique of pest control.[16]

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recognizes irradiation as an important technology to protect consumers. Fresh meat and poultry including whole or cut up birds, skinless poultry, pork chops, roasts, stew meat, liver, hamburgers, ground meat, and ground poultry are approved for irradiation.[17]

THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

Lighting Comparison List - Light Source, PPFD

LED lights are sensitive to prolonged exposure to extreme heat, and without a way for the hot air to escape, the heat will begin to damage the LED itself, causing it to prematurely fail.

There is a nagging feeling I have telling me to try these

Ceramic metal-halide lamp

Streetlamp with a ceramic metal halide bulb

Ceramic metal halide bulb with G12 socket

A ceramic metal-halide lamp (CMH), also generically known as a ceramic discharge metal-halide (CDM) lamp,[1] is a type of metal-halide lamp that is 10–20% more efficient than the traditional quartz metal halide[2] and produces a superior color rendition (80-96 CRI).[3]
Applications for these lamps include shop lighting, street lighting, architectural lighting and agricultural lighting including grow lights. A CMH light was first exhibited by the Thorn Lighting Group in 1981 at the Hannover World Light Fair, and the first commercial ceramic metal halide lamps were distributed by Philips in 1994.
The term "Light Emitting Ceramic" (LEC) is sometimes generically used to describe ceramic metal-halide lamps in grow lights in general, though that term is actually the registered trademark of a specific brand of ceramic metal halide light.[4][5][6][7]
