LED FAQ) Building and DIY

Sorry I'm a little confused, so would the Intel one I suggested work since its rated for 65w and I'm only gonna push a little over 31w? I know you suggest the arctic alpine 11 but when I was looking at heaksink/fans the best I could do on price was $66 for 4 shipped while the Intel would only be $31 for 4 shipped.

Unfortunately money is an issue on this build so spending twice as much on heatsinks/fans isn't something I can justify, while spending a few more dollars on the better driver is because that will save me money in the future.

Thanks for all the help on this, this thread was an awesome idea and answered questions, specific questions that couldn't be answered in the many other DIY led threads that just tell you how to build a specific light with specific parts and leave you to guess if you want to use a different COB or run multiple cobs on a single driver or the many other things that go into building a light. i hope to eventually be able to help others the way you have helped me as I truly feel COBs are the future of grow lights.

it will probably work- unknown as i havnt seen anyone use this model so check the specs on the underside of the sink to make sure there is physical room to attach the cobs-but the 65w rating seems to cover your use

if you are in the states im sure you could get 4 of the alpines for 40 bucks but cant find a link now ill have a look though

i totally understand the budget thing- all my recommendations are very budget conscience

yes i 'll put the cob under the fins. And i'll put 2 fans blowing on the fins.
Ok for the drivers, i'll put them anywhere else ...

i found cob holders on digikey, but they are designed for CXA25XX and i'll get the CXA30XX (or CXB30XX), they are a little larger. Do they fit ? Sorry for these questions but i don't want to mess things...

dont feel bad about asking-that sexactly what this thread is for i just ask that you will post a pic here when you are finished

ok i did the maths and ran it through google translate a few more times

that sink will be fine for 200w if active cooled- id still recomend putting a smaller fan right above each cob than 2 bigger fans because 100cm is along way to push air through the fins( not essential but just how i would use this sink)

unfortunately in the EU cob holders are hard to find and digikey doesnt stock them( i mean this 25xx model will not work its too small)

china also was hard for me to find them- like i said i got llucky and found them

try

http://www.idealindustries.fr/

they have a site in your local so they might have somewhere you can buy- i cant read it though lol

oh ok i wish i knew this before

this one will work for a 3070 according to the manufcturer so you can buy it with your chips

also these r the chips you want

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?vendor=0&keywords=cxb+3070&stock=1

did u already buy the drivers? in the EU i couldnt find anything that was fair priced only china- BUT i think there are better options now

i had found those from ideal industry but they have only 500 packs, i don't need that much http://www.idealindustries.fr/product/118/563/67995/.html

if i read correctly...

Some say that we don't need holders, they stick the cob and solder the pins, but i would prefer holders...

For the moment i've bought 3 heat sinks and 8 drivers ( from china ) at 10 dollars.

How much mA needs a computer fan ?

this holder will work

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?keywords=2-2154857-2

im glad you didnt use the sink you linked i had a bad feeling it would not be good

which sinks did u get and which drivers? why 8 drivers?

comp fans have dif mA ratings it will show on your fan(usually under 100mA)
you can use a cellphone charger to run all 3 fans at 5v

or buy a unit like

http://www.conrad.fr/ce/fr/product/...-600-mA-72-W-Goobay-NTS-600-basic-6xDC-GS-EuP

or
http://www.conrad.fr/ce/fr/product/...000-mA-12-W-Goobay-NTS-1000-basic-6xDC-GS-EuP

to be able to adjust how many volts(how fast the fan spins)

I bought those : http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1PCS...ransformator-DC-28-40V-1500mA/1480703465.html

8 because i need 8 cob's for starting and i bought the heat sinks i linked because you said it would not be bad if actively cooled, and they were pretty cheap for the size. With 4 fans and 4 cob's on 1 meter, i think it can be cooled enough, no ?

ok i see i thought u bought sinks from china

yeah that sink is fine 4 fans is good- i didnt really understand the websites # but my rough calculations say it shoudl be good for 95W passive or probably upto 250w active(with fans)

do you have a multimeter to test the drivers?
i bought from that store once and waited 2 months until i opened a dispute and got a refund =C

how big is your space? 1x1 m?

My space is 1.3 x 0.7 and i plan on putting a total of 400w of leds, 2 bars of 4 cobs, 2 warm and 2 cold per bar. For this area, i have a 400 hps, but it's not enough, and if i put 600w it's too hot and since i know hps is only 30% efficient, i want to try those led's.

Yes i have a multimeter and i'm aware of some electrical stuff in general, but new to high power led's

ok great make sure you dont accept the order is delivered from ali until you test the amps then open a dispute if its not correct
(once you confirm the order arrived you loose purchase protection so dont click that until you test)

i would just get the 3000k cxbs from digi and skip the the cold whites

with that much light you will be very very very satisfied

picture.php

so thats 6060L per sq ft

Yeah these datas are great !

But why no cold whites ? I think they are complementary.

Question : is it possible to plug 2 cob's in parrallel on the same driver? They would share the current equally and have the same VF, just a thought ???

Are you sure for the socket ? They say for CXA25XX i'm confused...

no cold whites because there is enough blue in warm whites(3000k)
and also because the cxb is only available in 3000k

here is the holder i suggest

Manufacturer Part Number 2-2154857-2

http://www.te.com/usa-en/product-2-2154857-2.html#pdp-related-products-inner

it says it can be used on the cxa30xx family chips the cxb is the same size

here it is on digikey
http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?keywords=2-2154857-2

for parallel wiring yes it is totally possible but at the current you have 1.5A i dont see the need

here is a great thread about exactly that-thnk to oldguy(much love)

All the drivers i find in europe or china are giving between 24 and 45 vdc, so we need one driver per cxb3070.

But is it possible to find a driver which delivers 200 vdc like REALSTYLES have got, but in europe?

Just to plug one driver per lighting ( more than one cob per driver )

Why digikey.fr ask me for taxes ( zoll ) ? I'm in france, i paid in euros currency, and i've got to pay tax ?
I dont see the benefit using digikey ...

Do you know that for that item, on the pic there are 2 connectors, so i ordered 12 items to go with 12 led's and they gave me 12 pieces, not 12 paires, so i can connect only 6 cobs. I'm upset, there are rip off's.

For the tax, it's the VAT from USA. I order on digikey.fr, i pay in euros, and they send me a parcel from USA, and i must pay the VAT, so the prices are not interesting at all,

Digikey are rip off's
