KC Brains & the Quest for Mothers

After reading so many mixed reviews about KC Brains I decided to get some seeds to see for myself.

I decided on keeping KC 36 as they're very short and stout, like litttle teapots.

My future interests are as follow:
Barneys -- LSD -- Fem.
Barneys -- Pineapple Chunk -- Fem.
Critical Mass Collective -- Monster Mass -- Fem.
Critical Mass Collective -- Purple Skunk Mass -- Fem.
Female Seeds -- White Widow x Big Bud -- Fem.
Mr Nice -- Critical Mass -- Regular

100% Germination.

Question: is the plant growth upon germination a good indicator of how "strong" the plant will be as it continues to grow?

For instance, I am *extremely* disappointed with Gehnetik Super Kritical. Yes, all 5 popped open, yet 3 of them I am gently nursing to a point where the shoots are actually coming above the soil level -- and this is several days after all the other plants are at least several inches tall! But is there the potential that they'll "make a comeback" and catch up once vegging for several more weeks? Or is hope lost now that they're such weak little sprouts? Similarly the Paradise Nebula (Herbie's Freebie) are weak looking, as is the Paradise Haze (freebie). Kritical Bilbo is keeping up with the pack.

For all the knocking that KC Brains gets, his seeds are the most vigorous of all the others. 4 of the 5 KC 36 are the fullest of any other seedlings, while KC NL and Haze are close behind. I'm curious to see how these babies shape up!

Now onto the preflower phase. Will update in a few more weeks.

Looking to get a pack of Mandala's "Safari Mix" -- anyone try?

I grew out his Leda Uno a few years ago outside, got a nice male and female. The female was super vigouorus, pest/drought resistant, and yielded well in a 5 gal bucket with minimal care. I was impressed with the strength and vigor of them so I hit up the White with some LU pollen when I made some f2's...I have a few more packs/varieties of his, KC 33, 36, and 42, to go though at some point.

Well worth the price, imo, fwiw...best of luck! I'm intrigued to see what you end up with too...

Nice one, wondered the same thing for years.. (About kc brains)
Thanks for checking out the posts Mack.

PS.
Batch two was just put into the incubator:
6x KC 36
6x KC Northern Lights Special
6x KC Haze Special
5x Random Bag Seeds
1x Afghani (Herbie Freebie)

Awesome Soopy! I'm curious about the 33 and 42. When are you planning to get those into production?

I'm pretty pumped too. Seems like sprouting seeds from any plant/flower/vegetable/fruit is a dice roll in general, so I'm thinking why spend hundreds or even thousands (unless you got the bank roll) looking for the Fountain of Youth when you can spend tens to get winners?

I'm looking forward to dipping into Mandala's Safari Mix as well.

I'm on a quest for a pheno that is extremely fast at flowering while still being able to get up in weight. Talking lollipop here!

Just posted in the "KC Brains Outdoors" thread, cross posting in case it may be of use to you.

Mango and 33 haven't started flowering yet (46* North). Sort of has me worried, but hopefully a dry winter combined with hardy plants will let me get a harvest. Spontanica has been flowering for a couple weeks, but those are in small cloth pots, so the root restriction may have caused them to go a bit earlier (?), or they are just an earlier KC variety.

The growth on these things is insane though. The 33 especially...10 foot tall Christmas trees. And this is in what is probably sub par soil (my first time growing), started around May 8th if I recall, and put in ground July 4th.

For comparison, HFH Polish Demon and 4 different Bodhi strains have all been flowering for about 3 weeks, in the same soil and location as the KC.

I definitely want to do some breeding with the 33, for earlier harvest, but passing on the awesome vigor and hardiness.

Interesting project BigNoise..Please keep us posted with your progress. KC 33 has long been an outdoor fave..How many hours of light / day are the Mango and 33 getting?

Just checked out your posts in the Out Doors section; your grow sounds awesome! Why not start your own thread? Either way I suppose.
Are you planning to post some pictures?

Why do you think they're not flowering yet?

Wish I knew, lol. Only thing I can figure is they just aren't as early flowering as advertised (although Brains site doesn't specify latitude). But the fact others have had them finish in September and October has me confused.

All my other varieties are flowering about when I figured they would. Hybrids from Hell flipped first week of July, and all my Bodhi strains are a few weeks behind the guys in California growing the same stuff.

That is an interesting situation for sure. Have you heard of anyone else who has had that happen to them?

Also, may have mised it but what is the plant type for the pheno(s)? More indica or more sativa? Do you reckon that that would create such an effect as the comparatively delayed bloom?

I have only ever grown Leda Uno by KC Brains & was impressed each time with yield & quality of flowers. There is a purple/black pheno that smells of old ladies perfume & tastes of heather that I wouldn't mind trying again.

different flower times from other growers could be like moon phase that year, clouds, weather and stuff.

They are all very sativa looking. Going by their reluctance to flower, they seem to be quite equatorial in nature.

Sorry to derail your thread, lol. To one of your questions, I had a few plants that were standouts as juveniles, but others caught up to them eventually. I wouldn't place too much stock in early growth. Others may have more informed opinions (first grow, as I mentioned).

I wouldn't be hasty in removing the slow to start...

Maybe they think they're in a drag race instead of on a circle track.
More than likely they will catch up within a couple weeks.

The Nebula should treat ya well.
I grew that a few years ago and it was a fast times fun high type... Not for before bed, imo. Great daytime smoke. Social, uplifting, head in the clouds...

Enjoy your grow & your projects.

Good observation on the equatorial as being a potential cause for their reluctance to flower. But on what level does the plant detect that, and how can you as the grower alter it? Or do you reckon that you're powerless to do so?

No worries about the thread, I'm happy we're talking about some high quality plants and trouble shooting your situation. My side of the grow will be weeks in the making in any case so it's fun keeping this as a lively conversation.

About the early growth, even now those plants are still tiny little sprouts still struggling to come up. It's very interesting. I wouldn't trust Gehnetik again as this is very disappointing to me.

Hey thanks for chiming in Passion!

I'm losing heart in the slow starters since the others are doing so much better, but we'll see how/if they catch up.

I'm definitelye looking forward to these various sativa blends here. My worry is that they'll be slower to flower and/or have a massive stretch since I'm trying to keep them as lollipops in small SOG tables. Did you find that at all when you grew Nebula?

Batch 2 is also 100% germination rate. No real stragglers this time, but one of the KC 36's is a litlte slow to grow.

My main priority is getting plants that are able to veg and bloom with incredible rapidity. Is vegetative growth speed of mothers a good overall indicator of that?

I grew Nebula as a bush and if I recall correctly stretch wasn't bad. However, I was also flowering under mh lighting and that seems to keep stretch down quite a bit. Talk about stacked nodes!
