JLo - Kentish Creme X Flo

I wouldn't have been happy binning those, despite the stretch - they look very healthy and robust, but with much fatter leaves than either of the parents, strangely. I'm fairly confident in the stability of Flo plants in passing on their traits reliably, so I'm expecting any anomalies to come from the Kentish Creme side - it being relatively unknown and all. If the KC is, as I suspect, a random hybrid with many recessive traits, especially for leaf-shape, then it's likely the next generation should see those re-appearing.

Interestingly, another friend's KC grow recently slightly hermied, and made some S1 seeds - I've never had that myself, nor anyone else I know who's grown it, so it's likely it was stress of some kind. But it does make me wonder whether last year's hermie JLo female was actually an unstable sex-gene in the KC being expressed. Food for thought. This V2 batch is from a 'grandson' of the original Flo male I used for V1, so I'm expecting that side of the equation to be fairly similar to before.

I popped round to see the new JLos at my friend's last night, and they look absolutely beautiful - inky-purple stems, dark, 'DJ Short'-green leaves, and perfectly symmetrical, just like last time. Sadly I didn't have my camera, but they were almost identical to the previous batch, except the leaves are more sativa-shaped and pointy, with more pronouced serrations - that is certainly the more PT-leaning MoFlo male used this time round.

Still unsexed, as they're in daylight, and still in small pots, but he's assured me they'll be repotted this week and put under lights (14/10) by next week, so I should be able to get them sexed quite soon, and bring the best male, and clones of the females back home. I'll check my other friend ASAP, who has eight or nine of the same batch growing outdoors - they should be getting very large by now...:)

Here's the new V2 JLos at last, round at my friend's house, and still under natural light. They've just been repotted, and will go under lights next week. At present, they're all very uniform, with only minor differences in leaf-shape and texture. All have inky-purple stems, near-perfect symmetry, and virtually no side-branching, just like their parents.

All the plants are just about sexed, and ironically, there's five females and one male, though I'll confirm that finally next week, as these things can change! But that's slightly disappointing, as I was hoping to have males to choose between, although for F1s it's less important than the next gen, as logn as they're healthy and strong.

One other issue is that the male has a mild spider-mite problem, and the others don't, which is something to watch. This is my friend's first grow, so obviously I need to be on this, so I dispatched a sprayer's-worth of Neem, and some Halo powder too over there today, and we'll get this male fixed up sharpish.

But I'm very pleased with the appearance so far, as they're almost replicas of last year's plants, but with even neater leaves. I'll keep this thread updated, but here's a few pics in the meantime - a group shot of the females, then a few close-ups of different female plants, and finally the male:

My friend wanted the male JLo chopped down yesterday, so I went over and took four good clones. It was still a bit spider-mitey, so I drenched it in Neem again before cutting, and they'll get put into cubes shortly.

The five females are under a 250W lamp temporarily whilst their cabinet is built, but they should get much better treatment by next week - they look very healthy, with some phenotypical differences (mostly height/structure, becoming more apparent. I'll update again with some pics as soon as there's more news, but so far, so very good...:)

Yeah, the plan is to get some pollen from this male (I wish I had another, but c'est la vie), get it frozen if early, and cross it to the best of the five females to make F2s. Then the selection really starts, as I don't have any idea what the Kentish Creme actually is, and whether many of its notable traits are recessive or dominant.

Structure-wise, it's like a really heavy-duty Flo, so the phenos are always likely to be close, even at F2, but it's more resin coverage, taste and flavour/high that I'll be looking for mostly.

Well, it sounds like my friend's five female JLos are going into flower, even though I'd hoped he'd hold off a bit longer for more branches. So I'll have to try and get over there tomorrow and get some clones of each - at least one, but I'd rather have more. I don't need one from every plant for corssing purposes, as they're all healthy and vigorous, but given I haven't had chance to watch them grow much, it might be better for now. More updates as they happen.

I needn't have worried too much - my friend was exaggerating the extent of the flowering somewhat, but nevertheless, I took two clones from each of the five females yesterday, just in case I can't get there again before they go too far. I was pleased to see that all the phenos are getting quite branchy - more so than either parent strain, which is a hopeful indicator that I might be able to get something other than pole plants out of this cross!

Most of the phenos are very similar, though can be grouped into two sets, one containing three plants (#1, #3 and #5), as they're slightly taller and more sativa in structure - it's probable that the mother of the F2s will come from one of these, although I'd like to flower them all out before I make a final decision really. And that's assuming the male is fertile...:)

The project is still progressing nicely - all the clones of each five females and the one male are rooted now, and will be potted on in a few days. My friend's new cabinet is just about built, and the plants will be going under a new light for flowering by the end of the week.

The next step is to try and identify the most likely candidates for the F2 mother, based on internodal length and branchiness, primarily, and then bud structure, resin coverage etc. as it progresses. The male clones, meanwhile, will be grown on to a decent size and then put into flower asap - I'd like a reserve supply of pollen of this one just in case!

All five female JLo clones are now rooted and potted, as are two copies of the male. The spares have been returned to my friend as backups. His plants are just going into flower, and he's built a nice big growroom, twice the size of mine at least, to flower them in. I'm going to donate a spare 250W light for maximum effect, as he only has one 250W at the moment, so the more the merrier!

Once his are properly flowering in a few weeks, I'll get some pictures taken, as I'll need to get an idea if any of the females are exceptional. More as it happens...

Here's the five JLo females at three weeks, and ready to get moving. They'll be getting much more light at the weekend, my friend assures me, so things should really get going then. They look much more branchy than either of the parents, which is good news for sure. More as it happens.
