Legends aren't about Panama red, Acapulco gold, Thai stick. They are about stuff we as individuals grow in our backyards and closets. You get to pick EXACTLY what stone or high you prefer as an individual who is not reliant on foreign sources, smugglers, and endless middlemen. This idea even of personally picking what you want at any given moment out of tiny self supporting grows that care to each individuals ideals was unheard of.
Brilliant observation and perfect summary of the "quantum leap" that has happened with hobby growing.

I`m 32 & when i tell my younger friends that the imported ganja weed 15 years ago that has seeds in it was better than the "skunk" weed now they think i`m mad. I always buy some Thai, Columbian, African or Jamaican import in Amsterdam.

^ That is the truth!! I am also 32, and some of the best bud I have ever smoked was compressed, mexican brick-weed. No joke! It was better than the majority of what gets passed off as "high grade" these days, only it had seeds. Big whoop, right? (I wish I would have saved some of them... DAMN!!!)

I can still remember this one bag I bought once, probably around 1995-96 or so... it had red hairs, looked kinda shwaggy, didn't have too many visible crystals... but when I rolled the first joint of it my fingers were the stickiest I have ever had them, EVER! After rolling the hash snakes off my hands, I smoked the joint, and it was like the fruitiest, most psychedelic LSD trip I've ever had, and I've NEVER had a high that exceeded this one since.

To this day, I am still trying to find a strain that gets me high like that one bag did way back then. GOD I LOVE SATIVA!@!!!!!!

^^The same for me.
I got a bag that was fat and I was happy as shit because I could roll a nice size blunt and still have more but when I went to roll the blunt the bud looked like straight dirt with pieces of leaf so my happiness was gone but since it was all I had I just said fuck it and smoked it while walking to meet someone.

When I took the first puff my brain started to feel like it was floating but I thought it was just me until I took another hit, felt it more and my friend said exactly what I was feeling. It felt like my brain was getting a lift and being tickled. It's hard to describe but it was NICE.

While we were walking I was listening to some music and as time went on the batteries were going down on my cassette player(lol) and the music started slowing down but I didn't notice it until my friend asked me where were we going and then I snapped out of my twilight zone but it was sounding so good and it made me feel like what I was seeing was surreal. What was crazy is I almost forgot where I was and where my friend who I went to meet was and it was MY NEIGHBORHOOD.

I got my thoughts together and accomplished my goal but I've never been that high off of herb like that. I came close but they were high quality and they still didn't give me that brain tickle.
I think the herb was from jamaica or somewhere in the west indies because it was a west indian neighborhood and it was bought from a rasta store.
What's funny is tthis happened in 1996 just like the other post. I loved that year along with 1995.

im 33... i dont agree with a word you'll are saying
ive not ever experienced dirty seeded compressed pot that was on par with, much less superior, to the sensi buds i started coming across in 95/96. I changed my buying habits.... i preferred spending $200 for the 1/2z of super poop than on the qp of brick garbage. im only 100 miles or so from the border.
maybe i just havent gotten the right shitty looking pot i guess lol
but damnit i tried i went thru many many many bricked qps back in the day....

^ Maybe it had to do with the fact that I was living in Florida at the time, I don't know... maybe Florida got the good psychedelic sativas or something... but just to keep things honest, let's be real here... For every 1 bag of super psychedelic sativa shwag there were 19 bags of dirt shwag I had to go through...

So yeah, I'm not saying all compressed brick weed was good... I'm just saying that the best bud I've ever had was actually compressed brick weed. (I know!)

T

Truthman

^^^Exactly

I'm not saying doo doo looking weed is better than a lot of high quality beatiful green herb, just that the best high I got was from herb that looked like garbage and had no taste. Like the poster stated I went through tons of dirt and they were garbage so it's not us saying dirt weed is better than others but I also have to be honest and say even though weed today is of a higher quality in taste and high, something is missing from the high. I can't put my finger on it but I think the aging or oxidation has something to do with it because brown weed feels more well rounded than fresh green weed but this when smoked eating is another story.

I think if you can let the herb breakdown or ferment without oxidation the herb today would be the shit.

I think this could have been why the weed I had was so good, maybe they allowed it to age without coming into contact with a lot of oxygen like a cornwrap and stick it into the ground that some do in parts of afica and being that the place was a rasta store they might have used the technique or something similar.
I don't know but if you had that weed I guarantee you would be agreeing with me. Again don't get me wrong weed now, for the most part, is still better than the past but I think it needs that "well rounded" feeling to make it THE BEST of all generations of weed.

I'm not saying todays is better than yesterdays or vice versa ( I have an opinion but for i'll keep it to my self lol), What i'm wondering is if folks are taking into account the fact that they were much younger, much less experienced 20 years ago than they are today and that things like getting stoned or high was a much more of an adventure to young folks.

What I'm saying is.... we tend to romanticize the past, and was wondering if this was being taken into consideration.

I'm speaking for myself but being young wasn't the reason because like I stated, the herb now is better overall but it's missing something that good brown weed(jamaican grown) had.

Also, if it was just age related all the weed would have affected me like the one in my story but that wasn't the case. Remeber this was one time that I got high like that and I smoked constantly.

Well, first off, this thread is not really about whether "old mj is better than new mj" so we're probably way off topic.

Secondly, it would be daft to compare today's weed quality (on average) with that of days gone by, when we had next to no control over what strains we toked. Motaco put it very well in post #158.

However, as someone whose younger friends are in their 30s, I can get what is being driven at, and no, I don't think it had to do with "romaticization". Well, maybe for some people, but not as a rule.

Simply put, if someone wants quality weed today, they are not dependent on landrace imports, so these are largely neglected. Back then, when indoor growing was unheard of, it was a different story. And yes, you did occasionally - I stress occasionally - come across weed that would blow away most all of today's offerings. You also came across hash that was out of this world (yes, I'm not American)

I started growing indoors 5 years ago. That's how long it's taken me to track down and build up a collection that I can honestly say compares favourably with the "best of" days gone by. And I know it would still be an order better if grown in real sunlight.

Seems like real quality weed needs that little bit of extra effort: selection (pheno hunting), 15+ week flowerings, etc, and not everyone feels that this extra effort is worth it.

Which is a shame. At least today you have the option. Back then it was a matter of luck to a much greater degree. But there is no question in my mind that there was some amazing stuff back then, which, even today, you'd be very hard pressed to match. You'd have to pick boutique stuff as a starting point and then select and select and select...

=====

But to get back on topic, it had nothing to do with "indica" diluting the sacred herb. As if indica is not the sacred herb LOL.
Hang on a minute, I'll just ask Lord Shiva...

I disagree with the writer of this thread.

I dont like dogmatic views of cannabis or growing, in the cannabis growing scene there is always some asshole that says this that or the other is better and thats what everyone should do.

Fuck that.

I like indicas, I find that sativas.. to me.. especially skunks and hazes sometimes makes my heart race and i feel uncomfortable. Sometimes very strong SSH for example can make me uncomfortable and sweaty rather then comfortably high.. So i avoid SSH these days. Ive never felt this uncomfortable feeling when smoking indicas, neither have i ever experienced heart racing when smoking indicas.

I like the indica high.. so what if its a cash cropper aswell? I really dont need anyone to tell me to limit my seed collection from indicas.

my favorite smoke these days is actually an auto/indica F1 generation hybrid which has a very pleasant giggly but relaxing high. It very potent aswell

The reason you guys think brick weed was better 30 years ago than sensi today is because you didn't know jack shit about weed back then and had nothing to compare it to.

Weed was not better in the past, period. This is a scientific fact, trying to argue to the contrary makes you look like a stupid hippy.

scientific fact... please share us the studies....

telling us we are stupid hippies if we dare contradict you
how old are you

I also think its a shame that sativas arent very present... but I think they will survive
its simply how it is... commercial growers favor it, and they are the ones supplying the demand

a lot of people dont know their weed
and a lot of people might never get the chance to smoke a very sativa strain

its a shame but, when money rules thats how it goes

I too have thought about the indica impact, its a shame. A lot of people around my parts stopped smoking because they said it made them lazy, and I wondered if the fact that there are no sativas present for these people to smoke was not a factor. I wake up in the morning, smoke some indica and I dont feel like doing anything anymore.

oh well

im happy someone pointed out that prohibition is a contributing factor to the lack of sativas out there

The potency of marijuana, measured by the presence of its (psycho)active ingredient, THC, has tripled since 1987, according to the latest figures from the Department of Justice’s National Drug Intelligence Center.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/05/14/marijuana.potency/

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) -- The average potency of marijuana, which has risen steadily for three decades, has exceeded 10 percent for the first time, the U.S. government will report on Thursday.

That was hard...

L

longearedfriend

yet there are other sources that say weed is not stronger today

these tests were only on thc levels...

thc is only one of many many chemicals in marijuana

The researchers who made the claim of increased potency used as their baseline the THC content of marijuana seized by police in the early 1970s. Poor storage of this marijuana in un-air conditioned evidence rooms caused it to deteriorate and decline in potency before any chemical assay was performed. Independent assays of un-seized "street" marijuana from the early 1970s showed a potency equivalent to that of modern "street" marijuana. Marijuana's potency hasn't changed for a while; bad data makes it seem like it has though.
statistics arent always accurate either

Myth: Marijuana Is More Potent Today Than In The Past. Adults who used marijuana in the 1960s and 1970s fail to realize that when today's youth use marijuana they are using a much more dangerous drug.
Fact: When today's youth use marijuana, they are using the same drug used by youth in the 1960s and 1970s. A small number of low-THC samples seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration are used to calculate a dramatic increase in potency. However, these samples were not representative of the marijuana generally available to users during this era. Potency data from the early 1980s to the present are more reliable, and they show no increase in the average THC content of marijuana.
