Hey iS,

Glad you made it here...

Our posts are overlapping, but this morf seems to have gone away... check out my speculation above...

I've mentioned this in a few PMs, and D9 has just separately recommended this in his thread, but if and when I get a chance to build out a new PPK system, I think I'm going to stack 3.5 gallons on top of each other.

EDIT... iS wrote above:
I doubt I even need to mention this, as it seems that every time someone has made a suggestion you already have the necessary parts but they don't fit into your security parameters, but are duct silencers an option for you?
You are correct, sir. I have built and used silencers in other builds. My longest run without a sweep in this build is about eight inches. So the mufflers have been broken down, recycled, with my favorite one in storage... This is the build out on this tent... the best I can do. And I like it just fine. Appreciate you looking out for me though...

They are this big:

picture.php

About 26" tall.
About 32" wide
About 16" deep.

Today is day 14 of flower, these baby girls are doing something... what is this? Could it be?

It's been so long, I just don't know.

picture.php

DJ Short says when grown outdoor, she'll double set flowers if you harvest at 45 and then again 56 days. They've never been healthy all the way through flower, so I'm not sure how long they have to go. I have time to give them to 60 days of flower, if they want to run that long. So somewhere between thirty and forty-five more days.

---

Jacks is still on the top of the to do list...

But I've been working up from the bottom.

---

I'm running around 2.4EC in the root zone res right now, 3.6 in the bulk tank. Showing pencil line burns around the leaf edges. I'm not trying to super-juice them... really trying to adjust for a pH fuck-up... pH was running low, I adjusted with pH up... and now the PPKs are too damn high (6.7).

I adjusted for this by running hot addbacks with low pH, but the EC is too high and I'm not getting the solution uptake (too much osmotic pressure on the side of the solution) to change out the volume I need to get the base pH down where I want it to be. When I'm done posting, I'm going to mix up some pH down (I've got General Hydroponics dry pH up and down), and see if I can get everything back to the high fives. Because my base reservoirs are so flat, two gallons barely move my surface level an inch... so I can add to the individual reservoirs without substantially changing the PWT/moisture profile.

If I pull this off, I'll have diluted my EC concentrations and corrected my pH. Yay for unstable mixes. Something to do finally!

Well, I've only got ten minutes of light to work directly with the girls, so I better get to it...

---

EDIT: pH is closer to where I want it to be (5.6-5.9), but the EC is still jacked 'cause GH pH down is Ammonium Sulfate, Citric Acid, and Urea Phosphate and I used a couple of gallons of this shit with an EC of 1.3ish to get it down. Now my nute profile is even more whack then when I deliberately mix it all whack.

Awesome.

I should probably look to vinegar or citric acid in isolation or something... 'cause they don't have a mineral profile (right?), but I don't know what they are/do...

I'll put that research on the top of my list, so I get to the buying of the Jacks sooner...

Why not dump it all, flush your girls and start from fresh nutes?

BECAUSE

They look fantastic!

... um... without too much more seriousness...

My nute regime has always been whimsical, unstable, and inconsistant. So I'd just be throwing out a bunch of random nutes for no other reason than to replacing them with something just as hack and off-kilter.

You just wait.

I'm gonna order the Jacks.

But in the mean time, I still have a little something to do and get that little sense that maybe I can derail this crazy train yet...

I only recommended that because I think he has some. After the switch to Jacks his problems will be over...

OO
Ahh, gotcha! I'm stuck with a gallon of FNG/FNB that I refuse to use in a res.. I'm slowly using the Grow on my vegging plants when I handwater.. but that'll take a while too.

cheers!

As usual, my camera is MIA. Seems like it decides to disappear for at least a week per month. And then show up on the top of the kitchen table. Like it was always there. But I can hear it laughing at me.

Moving on:

Maybe four days ago, I forgot to filter a batch of RO, and while I found time to do that my bulk res ran dry. (I like to be around, as my 'factory' plumbing has a tendency to blow apart and soak everything if I so much as blink.) I wasn't too worried about it, 'cause my bottom reservoirs are really flat, so there's quite a decent volume sitting in immediate reserve.

What I did not consider is that the solids in the Liquid Karma would dry out and cake onto the interior of my float valve and jamb the whole works up... So I'm boiling the valve in some water to try and clean it out. No great harm done, though. Just another reason to run Jacks, or some other clean nute regime, I guess.

For the record: I run Karma for the same reason that I run anything; there's still a bottle on the shelf...

Another interesting note...

I've developed a burn across the edges of my leaves. I had been running my fan directly towards the cool tubes, and not across the plants. My rationale was that the reduced air flow through the canopy would encourage localized pockets of humidity and reduce the effect of my redardedly low RH relative to temp. Two days ago, I started it oscillating again. Why? Beats me... but that may have been the cause of the increased transpiration resulting in too high of concentrations of nutes in the leaves.

Or it could have been that one of my unplanned splash-of-this, pinch-of-that nutrient soups had a-bit-too-much-of-this...

Who knows.

General health is still pretty darn good. Flowers are the nicest structure I've seen... maybe ever. This is definitely the best strain I've ever had access to, so maybe not killing it with toxic environmental factors will turn into goodness?

Time will tell. Time will tell.

Week Three (Day 21) Flower Pics

Week Three (Day 21) Flower Pics

So that f'n camera showed up this morning. Smug. No explanation. Exuding superiority. Smelling of gin.

We all know what that means.

Anyway, I didn't want to get into it with the camera. It's already a tense enough relationship as it is. Hell, when you get right down to it, I guess we are really just using each other. So that's what I did:

what a difference 2 weeks make

what a difference 2 weeks make

That was then;
Today, exactly one week into flower, I sat down with my plants as the lights kicked on. And there is one female pre-flower. And only one.

The rest of the plants are covered in ball-sacks. Somehow, the universe conspired sickeningly to swap female to male. I'm not talking hermi here, full on male bullshit.

It may not be the pipe, or it might be the pipe plus the heat, or anything else... who the fuck knows.

Who the fuck cares.

Another failure.

Awesome.

Well, now I guess we know the PPK grows robust male plants too...

And this is now:
What a roller coaster ride. I think perhaps you offended the gods somewhere and 2 weeks ago they had a good laugh. Maybe next time sacrifice that chicken like I told you and avoid all this shit.

Seriously IF they look terrific. How much does your face hurt from smiling so much? Great work so dont fuck it up, LOL.

I'm trying to imagine what they'll look like 4 weeks from now. The mind boggles...

I'm smiling pretty hard right now... that last pic with the baby glands... oh... the baby glands...

---

Maybe I was required to fall to my knees at the feet of the gods.

Maybe I mistook their health and vigor as the result of my work.

Maybe I needed to be reminded that I am nothing more than a facilitator for this spiritual guide and healing force, and that my job is only to support them in their work (that they might be able to support me in mine?).

Or maybe (just maybe) I need to stop drinking out of the RO/nutrient-soup bucket...

Vapor Pressure Deficit... Hydraulic Force vs. Osmotic Force vs. Godzilla

Vapor Pressure Deficit... Hydraulic Force vs. Osmotic Force vs. Godzilla

OFF SITE LINK:Urban Garden Magazine, Issue 11, Vapor Pressure Deficit Article

Above is a tidy little article that throws out pretty solid numbers for VPD and environmental management. I got there by google-ing some info dropped by DonkDBZ in his current DIY UC grow. At the time of this post, his current grow thread is here, and looks to have all the makings of the dankness. Y'all should go and check that shit out...

Anyway, he posted a pic of the chart from the article that opens the post, and it got my brains all a spinning. It was definitely either the chart or the second extra large coffee of the morning I was just 'gifted'. Nice gift, buddy. I need more caffeine running through my system right now like I need... shit, I don't know.

But I'm sure I didn't need it.

Look at this post. Very abrupt sentences. Typing around four hundred words per minute. My forearms are about to cramp up. Need a banana.

But freely given, freely received, right? Gotta drink it, right?

So I have some stuff to write here, but I'm going out for a jog first. In my best black dress shoes with a fresh polish. I might not even take of this damn tie. But I'll be back. And I'll speculate on some plant physiology that is probably already well established in the most basic of botany manuals, but is currently gestating in my over-accelerated brains like baby Athena in Zeus's poor skull.

The pounding.

The horror. Oh shit... mixing references here.

I gotta chill out. Be back in an hour.

----

Back. But now I'm not as excited to write. The end result in my world is that I want to drop my EC way down for a week and see what happens.

FIVE MINUTES LATER:

Here's a bit of what I wanted to talk about, before I ran out of steam.

While the plant is transpiring, the RH at the leaf surface is 100%.

When we look at VPD, we are considering the effect of RH on transpiration rates. What I have yet to see in discussion (although I haven't looked very hard) is the fact that the relevant RH is that which is immediately around the leaf (under)surface, or more generally, the relative distribution of humidity within the room.

If I have a metric-butt-tonne of turbulent air in the garden, I probably have a pretty even distribution of RH and can measure it anywhere.

In my garden I measure it with a meter that's just chillin there. Outside the canopy. Reading like 30%RH.

Things are green and happy. No burns. And I'm feeding pretty hot right now. Implying a relatively low rate of transpiration. Implying a relative high local RH.

And my only fan in the garden is pushing directly against the cool-tubes, in the direction of the carbon-can/cool-tube-intake. When I did toss it on oscillate, I started to burn my plants, cause I drove down the local RH and increased transpiration and nute uptake.

I guess my point, 'cause I'm bored of writing, is that high VPDs can be somewhat managed by reduced internal air flow (and maybe an increased feed EC).

wow, those plants have female body parts!

the leaves look just a little over nuted but not bad.

so, hows the jack's workin out? hehehe!

thanks for the link to the urban grower article. that goes into the file.
