I also remember when a handshake meant something....

..."When holding hands meant something baby"

-John Mellencamp,
"Jack and Dianne"

Some cool trivia about that song. Jack was a black guy, made obvious in the first draft of the song. Under pressure from the record company, Mellencamp changed the lyric so it might sell better, not be so controversial, and become a hit. $$$ decision. Song can still be interpreted that way anyway though, on purpose.

I remember when,

Cars had carbuerators, and the air filter was a big, round, donut shaped thing that sat inside the big round air cleaner metal box..

I remember opening them on friends cars, when their car wasn't running right, and finding more than a 1/2 inch thick layer of dirt, hair and crud covering them...

Yeah, Bud....my car's in the shop at the moment. Cam shaft sensor problem, which could be anything...it's a head scratcher for the 3rd mechanic after sensors replaced and still engine light is on- intermittently.

Runs fine, but there's a problem unforeseen....once resolved, selling it to a college student wanting power and economy!

Preferred butterfly carburetors, those air filters, easily replaced vs. vehicles run by computerized parts. Ahh, life was simpler then.

Ahhhh, took a road trip 2,500 miles following all the coasts (Gulf, Caribbean and Pacific) of Mexico in 1980....in a Gremlin. Boo-koo problems!!!

No wonder there is no more "American Motors", absorbed by other car manufacturers until it rode off into the sunset...

I bought an American motors rambler used in about 1971, drove about 3 miles ,,the left front a frame collapsed causing the tire to fold under to a horizontal position ,, at about 35 mph , I slid thru an intersection without hitting another car ,, and stopped on the other side on the signal light . Fixed the car ,and sold to a friend for $ 200 , saw the friend 2 weeks later, friend no more ..

Drove a beat-up Rambler wagon in my HS years, mid-, late-70s.
3 on the column, I think.

When back in the early days of icmag, you could come in here at any time of the morning, day or night and your friends were here. Now it's like crickets run the place.
