Something that rarely gets mentioned enough about watering is to take into account your grow rooms relative humidity.
If the RH is low, like mine seing as I grow closet style,( :( I mean grew closet style lol )you'll need to catch them before the soil is too dry.
Having the right RH makes pot plants just a little more resistant to a later watering, also having an RH in the 60-70% IMHO makes nutrient uptake more efficient and less prone to react to a slight imbalance and makes for an overall less srtetchy plant.

simpleton hit the nail in the head. the idea of growing organic is so you get all the beneficial micro organisms in the soil. if you let the pot dry out you will kill them and not be able to get them back. I use a 1 gallon mist sprayer it waters evenly and you dont get those water tunnels like you do when you just pour, also only water enough for 2-3 days. you dont eat to hold you for 4-5 days and neither do plants. one last thing if you feed using liguid ferts get an ec meter so you know how strong your solution is and you wont have a salt build up problem either. which means flushing isn't necessary

Dude, humans are not plants, snakes eat every 2 weeks, do you compare them to humans? No I'm so tired of this analogy, it is just ridiculous. I drink every hour, do plants? No they obsorb on a continuous basis. Watering always depends on the size of the plants and how much water they are using and the size of your medium and their root structure, as well as how hot it is, and a few other factors. We cannot tell someone how often to water, if their plants are rootbound then they are going to need more watering, if they are very well aerated they also may need more frequent watering. I disagree as well, I have gone more then 5 days without watering on small plants and they are fine. It is up to personal opinion IMHO. But above all you do not want your soil to wet. To many problems occur, my first grow I got fungus nats from watering every 2-3 days.

I think that we, humans, absorb the things we take in on a continuous basis as well.

Barf, I think it is absolutely true that there are a ton of factors regarding a plants watering needs but this thread is more about methods of dispersion, the quantities used, and the saturation point growers like to keep their medium at.

Thanks for your input regarding the topic.

Seedlings- Water just a bit every day until they are large enough to handle more.
Flowering- Water when the pot feels light and looks dry. The amount it about 1/2 liter.

Anyone out there think there is a general amount of water to add to a "standard" potting mixture?

Let's say the medium consists of potting soil and 30% perlite.

Do you think the amount given to satisfactorily saturate the gallon can be multiplied for additional gallons of soil?

I find all of these water amounts used much less than what I use.I use a gallon or slightly more for a flowering plant in a 3 gal container.I go for total saturation all the way through, runoff is a consequence not the ultimate goal.Using this technique you must use 25-30% perlite in your mix otherwise you could drown your plants.

5gl pot ffof fflw and worm castings and perlite. one quart every other day in veg. one quart a day in flower. i dont like to let it totally dry out and i water totally by hand. using this method you must have plenty of air around pots.
