Clever lad, good job!
I've seen other field setups using a spent butane can, jerking the whole valve assembly, etc out, drilling a hole in the bottom for the butane nozzle and using the cap to hold the filter in place.
Extra points for using what you pick up off the ground when confronted wth an egnima! You go lad!

I'm an actual lampworker now, I've got 2 years under my belt making among other-things, glass BHO tubes and dishes :smile: here's some of my glass work for anybody interested, I love melting glass and making functional glass art, wish I had started sooner.

im so glad i ran across this post... i built my bho tube yesterday and it was sooooo easy and looks amazing... i just scarred the bottle with my dremmel and my (non-diamond) abrasive disks... then i filled it to the neck with water an hit it on the top to blast off the bottom... cleaned up the edges with some more dremmeling and ta-da!!!
I just graduated college and i need to get a job (fuckin economy) so so i had to quit smoking (9 weeks clean tomorrow, superfluous i know, but i dont know when this test is going to happen and id just b really pissed if i worked this hard to get a job then fd it all up on the drug test!)... so i have 35g of high quality fluff and some budz that molded during my last harvest sitting in the freezer and once i dont need clean piss any more i will christen my BHO tube and have a crazy BHO party
im the one who submitted this to the DIY link-o-rama... the silver lining to my unemployment is tons of time to browse 2 year old IC threads! i hope a bunch of people stumble across this now and make some badass recycled BHO tubes!

Heh, I was keeping an eye open for a DIY BHO tube for a long time, spotted some stainless steel shower curtain rods at Home Depot for $10 that would probably work well but would need a drilled out stopper for the butane insert, would probably have to order a solvent resistant one from a scientific equipment supplier.. Was in the Indian foods store getting some spices and spotted old style glass bottles of "Limca" soda, thick glass, thin diameter with a nice taper at the bottom for securing a clamp. Ended up getting close but too jagged on 3 of those bottles by holding it underwater and hitting with a piece of rebar. Saw an internet video, and found some old style Coca Cola bottles at a Mexican grocery (the soda is acutally drinkable without corn syrup!) and used some string soaked in liquid paraffin (other flammable liquid can be used) tied around the bottle bottom and set alight, put bottle in pail of water and a clean (enough) break appeared. Coverd the underside of the cap with aluminum foil and used a bottle capper to recap it, pliers could work if very careful, and made a hole with a drywall screw in the cap. Works great, but I think a thinner tube would be more efficient, the bottle has a 2½" outside diameter at its widest.
inandout: It'll work fine as long as it's not so jagged as to rip your coffee filter; one thing that works great is to use a piece of metal mesh as a prefilter for the coffee filter. I think o'kief sells fine metal mesh discs, I got some #120 stainless steel mesh from smallparts.com, works great for dry sift, making screens for bowls, and BHO tube prefilters.
Maximo: some of those pieces are pretty amazing, like the frog!

bumble: why did you cover the underside of the cap with aluminum foil? does butane not play nice with whatever it is that lines the bottom of bottle caps? is there enough contact there to really matter? and doesnt butane not play nice with aluminum anyway??

Usually when doing bottle extractors I just drill a small hole to the bottom of the bottle and run the butane out from the neck/mouth. Easier than removing the whole bottom and you only need some kind of a drill and a glass drill bit. Very thin glass might break when butane hits the bottle, seen it happen.

Often one bottle was enough . Usually I put some twigs at first, butane did not spread evenly there. Filling one bottle was not such big problem, emptying could be done by shaking vigorously. Overall this was faster and easier way to get to the final product. Long and relatively thin 1+ litre bottles work well . 2 or 3 250 ml cans of win or new castle through one of those would give good results. Note, 0,33 litre coca cola bottles have almost perfect length to width ratio. Leftovers could be rerun with qwiso tek. I prefer popcorn buds finely ground for making bho extract.
Done that, with copper wire or tape holding the filter. Some othres are Different sized glass bottles with either hole in the bottom or bottom cutted out, beer cans, stainless steel pipe from wardrobe, solvent cans, honey bee extractor, asp baton handle, paper roll core(had a funny taste), thermos bottle extractor, kaboom and bong. I can go to great lengths for bho. I'd say thermos bottle was best, just done like qwiso but longer soak for good yields.
