Damn I hate to agree with Douglas , but yeah, formal education grades the ability to memorise and regurgitate what they are told. Intelligence relies on the ability to analyse and calculate.
Very different types of brain.
Society needs both, but dumb people need to see qualifications or monetary success in order to accept who you are. If you are poorer and less educated than a dumb person, they won't accept your intelligence because they don't have the skill set to acknowledge it. But if you are less qualified and less successful than a dumb person, we do have to ask ourselves if we are kidding ourselves about our intelligence level.
I'm not, but the next person maybe.

Lots of pain in this thread, touched a nerve it did.

The realization of being in a peer group whose ideals
you disagree with, yet you continue to strive to meet
those ideals.

That's unfortunate.

Education fails to prepare you for that.

Cannabis use helps opens up the possibilities within,
explore your potential, and live your life to fulfill your expectations.

And fuck the haters, fuck them right in the heart.

My rant is maybe off topic, but this comparison nonsense grinds my gears.

Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,
it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

ugh.

Many people view college as an extended childhood where kids get to play and think they will be an astronaut or the president for another 4-10 years.

For those who want to learn at home, I suggest -
https://www.Lynda.com/

Classes on programming in most subjects. 3D modelling, 3D animation, etc.

Also, MIT has the Open University - most MIT classes are online -
https://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

Cannabis & Caffeine help with a lot of the technical material.

For learning HTML5 -

https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-html

-and-

https://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_syntax.asp

HTML5 incorporates a lot of the functionality of Flash.

Flash is fun but I could never start learning it till I had a human teacher to help me. Flash does almost everything (one animator used it to create a 45 minute long movie; the World Surf League uses it to present their webcasts).

One of the guys in the animation world, coached me a tiny bit on getting started learning it.

He heavily emphasized the learn-by-doing approach, AKA the Just Do It approach. Not much into degrees, more impressed by good design.

For people who want to learn at a community college, I suggest Santa Rosa Junior College. Some of the instructors are as good as anywhere. They own 49% of the stock in a local bank, so their classes are CHEAP. Until Sonoma County housing got out of control, it was one of the least expensive places to get good education (and good Cannabis) anywhere.

http://www.SantaRosa.edu/

+ they have a clinic, available at no charge or minimal charge for all students.

One of the least expensive universities in the US or Europe is ETH Switzerland. Was $2000 a year for tuition last time I looked.
https://www.ethz.ch/en.html

American universities are getting ridiculously expensive.

That's what I'm sayin', with the Bonecrusher all day
That's what I'm sayin'

Askin' nicely won't help you don't you know?
Say Bonecrusher, please don't crush my bones
You know I lost my hearing so long ago...

So long ago, so long ago, so long ago...

Education isn't what it used to be. Why would someone like myself want to spend 3-4 years voluntarily studying something that interest them, when I know I'm going to be left with a debt for nearly the rest of my life. I say this as someone who did that and has a Bachelors in Philosophy, a $50,000 student loan, and a job not related to my field of study in any way (it's IT though so pays my student loan back well enough). Who is going to want to become a teacher when they'll earn less than what they owe for the first 10-20 years? I currently work at a 'world class university' and the place is run like a business, no one gives a shit about how these students are learning, we care about marketing to the overseas students cause we charge them 3x-4x what a national student would pay plus provide them the services and capability to live here, for a price of course. As a result of this, all of the good professors are leaving and 2 out of every 3 students that enroll in a University level course doesn't complete it.

I've really got to take issue with the poster that says millennials are lazy and want top paying jobs right away. The reality is it was very different in your time, my parents were paid to get their degrees, with the jobs they got from their degrees (teaching mind you, not a high paying job) they were able to easily purchase a home and car and live comfortably. My generation leave school (if we can afford to go in the first place) in close to six figures of debt, only to work at jobs that expect servitude, limit sick and holiday days, with no ability to afford the $150,000+ deposit it takes to purchase a home now, and the added pressure of being bombarded 24/7 with negativity, product shilling, social manipulation, etc... Of course every generation has it hard, that is until the next generation has it harder.

I for one moved out of the US for many reasons, mostly being that I was pretty much stripped of my rights as a citizen due to being a felon (marijuana related, did 7 years). I moved myself across the world to New Zealand. Came to the country with $9 us dollars and was given a roof over my head by my mum, for a short time. I've worked every day since being here, weather it be legit taxable jobs, or whatever I can do, I did it. I spent many years hustling 2-3 jobs in order to simply keep a roof over my head and help my sister get through her accounting courses. I now work a job that is considered by society to be 'good', pays well and you know what, I still can't afford a home, I still struggle when I have to fill my car up (costs $160 to fill a car here), I still wince when I get bills. Telling me to invest or saving money, its laughable, I have to survive first. It's not fair to call out a whole generation as lazy when it was your generation that created this mess we're all now in.

When threads like this pop up I always think of John Lennon.

"You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free your mind instead"

My city not unlike many others are full of nail salons run by Asian immigrants. People who come to the US to sit on a stool and wash people's nasty ass feet and paint them up pretty. Work long hours and to them they are living the dream.

Then to hear your fellow Americans bitch how tough it is to get ahead. Pfft

It's certainly provoking a wide range of responses!

I find much of it particularly interesting because I've seen things from many perspectives, I worked instead of going straight to college like most of my cohort (and probably shared the same sentiment many have expressed about college before I really went), and didn't graduate from college until I was in my early 30s, further education mid 30s. When I did go to college I did adult ed classes in dribs and drabs, then state u classes, and finally a selective u (with, by chance, a semester at an elite college, which was certainly eye opening). Reality is, they did not teach the same things. Education is highly stratified in the US. Not all schools or fields teach critical thinking skills in the same way.

One thing to consider: people talk about indoctrination, etc, but I don't think they're considering that most (but certainly not all) people who perform at the level where they get into the highest ranked schools (or, say, medical school) are by their nature people who understand how to conform to expectation. They also tend to be people (again, not all of them) who benefit from the status quo. So why, beyond being busy people, would they question things as they are?

Also, probably the greatest lesson I learned from all of the education I received was to accept the world as it is, not as I would want it to be. Doesn't mean you can't work to change it, but it's useful to be realistic and not expect the ideal to be reality.

This is true, as some one who worked in colleges for over 40 yrs. I can state as FACT that enrollment soars when the economy is bad and folks are out of work!

..... one thing that degree will buy you is a big boost in social status and a lil' bit of HOPE.:tiphat:

in lots of places, a big bag of good weed will do the same thing at a ridiculously lower price...:tiphat:

Yes....this is a good thread because - its educational to discuss and debate - education.

We come from all walks of life - in many areas of the world - and have all had varied experiences, successes and failures - with the educational establishments - in many countries - so there is much to recount.

There's a lot of things an education can help with. But nothing beats experience. My dad had no formal education but could root a rock. My farming cousins have agricultural and horticultural educations. I run to them for advice on growing. I have an MBA and CS degrees but I'd be shooting in the dark without their advice.

While I have legacy knowledge from when j was a kid, to be honest, I've learned more from here than anywhere.

I've used Spreadsheets to help me plan, but by harvest time, they're useless to me. Mother nature has her own designs. Lol

Oh.i forgot about that.thank you.i was actually thinking I'd like Kunai.

I'm glad you said something cause it's relative to this thread.im sure you've been a welder by trade for a long time right? It's true if your good at your trade you can make a lot of money, but with no trade or degree your fucked.my father and his two brothers have been roofing for 30 years.they made a lot of money 20 years ago and built whole communities.but now we are broke.only reason we got the farm is cause they deal weed.they are great roofers too.ive done it for 15 years but I'm only 5 foot 6.im strong as hell but it's not for me.so I'm pretty fucked.

In case anyone was wondering I tried to OD on a bunch of pills and whiskey.didnt work.i guess I am the liquor

Over 130,000 credit-hours of street smarts and about 150 or so at a university. I moved to Tucson when I was 18 "to go to college", which is what I told everyone in Virginia, but really I moved there because the Trans High Market Quotations said thats where the cheapest weed was. High Times was right on the money with that one.
