How do you separate seeds from weed?

Just finished my seed grow and have lots of seeds mixed with weed now. I hate to separate the seeds picking them one by one. This is worse than trimming the weed.

Did anybody ever find a way to facilitate this work?

I squish the buds from bottom to top in between my finger and thumb if im smoking them, for larger amounts i like to make a rough mix of seeds and crushed flowers and stems, then either sieve or thresh or use gravity like an album cover.

Depends on how heavily seeded the plants are but if you hang to dry the plant i would put a tarp or drop sheet under the plant/plants as seed will drop as they dry.
Then after they dry and you trim the flowers and place the dry flowers in to cure n as you air n move the flowers around more seed will drop to the bottom.
The remaining seed in the flowers as you go to smoke it do as Bean says.
Dont forget to cure the seed before you store.

The gravity approach works well I use a small box and just tilt it side to side getting the weed out . I'm cleaning the weed out of the seed

I have shaken a few out by knocking the bags about a bit, but found the individual approach wasn't so hard, using a dental scraper shaped like a tiny flat spoon. It easily pushed half the bract away, and let you get under the seed where it attaches. Easily parting it from the plant. You can get a seed out every second when things align for you.

Back when there were newspapers you could open a section up so the big fold is toward you. Have something there ready to catch the seeds. dump the material on the newspaper, lift the far end a bit while making a vee with the long fold. Shake to get the seeds to separate as they roll down hill to the collection container. Those in flowers, leave them there or you will have to break up the flowers.

A box lid like they have for reams of copy paper, the cardboard bottom of a case of dawgphood cans would also work on a smaller scale.

Thank you for all your hints folks. But this machine of Hammerhead...this looks like something I need. Sigh. Have a look and you know what I mean:




I have about two ounces of this stuff. I dried my plants in different boxes, every plant in its own box, so I know what seeds are from which plant. When I hang them on a line and all the seeds drop out and spread over the floor I don't know what seed is from which plant. I shake out the loose seeds out of the plants in each box, but there are still lots of seeds inside and it is much work to separate them. It is always the same. I hate it.

Mine is no longer made.. There are others that make them. You can make 1. For now just get a piece of cardboard and use a card to sift the seeds.

Going by the pic you want to separate plant matter from seed.I have done this my self get a salad bowl put say 1/4 to 1/2 oz of it in move bowl around seed will fall to one side pick out seed.Sucks but works use gravity to separate the seed.

No, just kidding. They bust me as soon the customs check it.
Maybe I will try a fan tomorrow., but this will be a big mess when I blow all the weed from the seeds. Still don't know where to do? On my balcony?

I fear this is the only way. Hoped there would be better ones. Because there is still much weed left. I would guess about a third is still weed. Maybe a sieve with big mesh like the kids use in the sandbox is useful. I will get something like that and try.

Newspapers are bad because the fine particles and trikes stick to the rough paper surface. Big magazines with shiny like Life were the best. Standard tools for youth in the 70s.

Good idea. Think I still have a Wok anywhere. Guess this will do the same job like the pans the gold diggers used.

I still have a 80 gallon can full of seeded hemp from last years seed run to sort for this years planting, Been doing all the described methods, too slow and tedious for larger jobs.. the fan does work, just put 3 or 4 containers in front of fan and drop material down slowly in front so that the containers catch it. Container's I use are from those storage tubs..

Eventually I will build a machine like HammerHeads,,

Edit - re-read original post, 2 ounces, just pick em out, those disposable aluminum tins for cooking turkeys with a old credit card at an angle on your lap work well too.. even a paper plate will do..

the old school way works and is a lot faster than hand picking them
